BBAS071: Skateboard Madness with guests Adrian Demain and Miki Vuckovich Oct 27, 2024

Show notes

Welcome back to the show! Today, Larry and Matt are joined in the studio by two legends of the sport- Adrian Demain and Miki Vuckovich- to dissect the 1980 oddball odyssey, Skateboard Madness! While there’s no real way for anyone to pinpoint what this meandering film aspires to be- part skateboarding documentary and part road-trip comedy with roller skating, stop-motion, claymation and animated sequences thrown in- what cannot be disputed is the obvious and undeniable groundwork it helped to lay for star Stacy Peralta to bring to the early Bones Brigade videos that would follow just a few years later, where many of the movie’s scenes and themes would be repurposed and reimagined for the next generation. Was Mellow Cat’s epic urethane journey enough for him to keep his job at the Wonder Rolling News? There’s only one way to find out. Join us, shall you?

BBAS070: Dogtown And Z-Boys with guest Glen E. Friedman Oct 15, 2024

Show notes

Welcome back to the show! For this, our 70th episode, we’re absolutely honored to be joined by none other than legendary photographer, artist, and author Glen E. Friedman to discuss the genre-defining 2001 film Dogtown and Z-Boys! Chronicling the rise of the fabled Zephyr Team in the 1970’s, this Stacy Peralta-directed documentary brought the roots of modern skateboarding- along with names like Tony Alva, Jay Adams, and Shogo Kubo- into the cultural mainstream, while paving the way for a slew of like-minded documentaries to follow. As a co-producer and creative consultant on the film- as well as having been pool and bank-side for many of the Z-Boys most renowned formative sessions- Glen brings a unique and truly one of a kind perspective, which he was gracious enough to sit down and share with us in candid detail. If you want to know, there’s only one way to find out- join us, shall you?

At just over 30 minutes, Sponsored is an embryonic foray into the world of skate documentaries that covers Mike's life in skating up to that point- a mere blip on the radar of the career we know today- and shows us some of the earliest glimpses of footage from his early skateboarding years, including some incredible public access cable and TV commercial appearances and (to that point) never seen b-roll from his days filming for Public Domain, and much more. What are you waiting for? Sprint through the graveyard and join us- shall you?

Show notes

Larry and Matt are back in the deep end to bring you another thrilling installment of The Bones Brigade Audio Show’s Sk8 TV Files! This time around we are joined in the studio by our good friend (and returning guest) Skate Talk Bob to discuss Episode 4 of everyone’s favorite Nickelodeon classic- “the only skateboarding show made by skaters, for skaters”, as it was known. This one is packed to the proverbial gills with the good stuff, including interviews with Powell stalwarts Ray Barbee and Lori Rigsbee, a look at the Transworld Skateboarding office in 1990 with the legendary Grant Brittain, a bowl-side chat in a blown out backyard with Tony Alva, and much more. Are ramps just a hobby? Are pools serious business? There’s only one way to find out- join us, shall you?

BBAS067: Camp Motherhood with guest Jim Fitzpatrick Sep 01, 2024

Show notes

The BBAS crew, along with our good friend Jim Fitzpatrick, are back in the studio this week to delve headfirst into the short, sweet and mostly unknown Powell Peralta video, Camp Motherhood! Developed primarily as a tradeshow video- promotional material to support Powell’s 1989 sales and marketing initiatives- Camp Motherhood is an interesting time capsule, inadvertently bridging the gap between where Public Domain left off and Ban This started, and marking an infamous era for the ‘Brigade that saw the introduction of the notorious Field Manual, the exit of Mike Vallely, and numerous other changes beginning to manifest under the surface. As always, Fitz breaks it all down with more detail and behind-the-scenes knowledge than you could ever reasonably expect. You have your marching orders, private- so join us, shall you?
