    Bittersweet Moment #5: FIRE Apr 18, 2019
    Show notes

In the aftermath of the devastating fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, Tiffany is reminded of a similar fire that took place at Rome's Basilica San Paolo fuori le Mura in 1823. In telling the story of the San Paolo fire, she takes comfort in the fact that almost every building or monument of any significant age has been rebuilt, at least partially and sometimes extensively, over the centuries. Even Notre Dame herself was heavily restored after she was brutally ransacked during the French Revolution. Notre Dame will recover from this devastation, just as San Paolo did, just as she has done before. This fire does not signify the "end" of Notre Dame. It is simply another dramatic chapter in her long and fascinating story.

Episode 253: PERCEPTION (with Amy Herman) Apr 15, 2019
    Show notes

Amy Herman is an art expert who trains members of law enforcement, intelligence agents, counter-terrorist specialists, and healthcare professionals to enhance their observation skills by learning to look at works of art. Amy is the founder of The Art of Perception, and the author of Visual Intelligence.

In this episode, Amy and Katy visit the Whitney Museum in New York, and they discuss how observing art is a teachable skill, and why it holds the key to heightening our awareness in our day-to-day lives. Amy asks Katy to describe some of the works of art they are seeing, a fascinating study in why we notice what we notice.

This episode delves into perception, observation, and not just how we see, but how we communicate what we see. Also: how do our biases influence us, not only in terms of the art we chose to look at, but also what we observe and how we interpret what we observe? Don't miss this fascinating conversation, on location at the Whitney Museum!

Visit our social media sites to see some of the works of art described in the episode: Instagram, Twitter, Facebook.

    Bittersweet Moment #4: DANCE Apr 11, 2019
    Show notes

On this week's mini-episode, Katy interviews Matt Harding—you know, that crazy American guy who danced with people all over the world and taped himself doing it? His videos dancing alone and with locals, in front of some of the most recognizable monuments in the world and in some of the most remote places in the world, have garnered over 40 million views since he started back in 2008.

In this mid-week mini-interview, Matt explains how he came to discover that everyone in the world is, essentially, the same, and how dancing is one of the most universal and unifying human impulses. He also describes how he managed to record himself dancing with locals in North Korea at Kim Jung Il's very last birthday celebration in 2011.

Find Matt Harding at his website, Where the Heck is Matt?, or connect with him on Facebook or Twitter.

Watch the original 2008 video that started it all (look for Katy in the Seattle crowd!) or the 2012 video.

    Episode 252: CREATIVITY Apr 08, 2019
    Show notes

What do Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin (and so many other artists) have in common? They all reached the apex of their creative output while living outside their countries of birth.

An email from a listener, who also happens to be a member of indie band Trash Can Dream, inspired this week's episode. Emma Grace Stephenson is one of two Aussie expats who make up the band that is now based in New York City. Her email sparked a discussion on how travel, and specifically living abroad, can inspire art and creativity, and why we think that is.

We close the show with their song, Out on the Sea, that touches on this topic. Find the band here.

    Bittersweet Moment #3: LANGUAGE Apr 04, 2019
    Show notes

In this week's Bittersweet Moment mini-episode, we tackle a question from a listener: how do you learn a new language effectively?

Tiffany draws on her experiences studying and speaking Italian and French (and a smidgen of Spanish and German) to come up with five tips to help you master a new language. Listen in to find out what they are!

PS Aurelio has a few suggestions too.

    Episode 251: SHOULD Apr 01, 2019
    Show notes

How many of your life decisions were entirely your own, and how many were influenced by what the people around you wanted, hoped, or expected you to be doing? And what happens when you decide to go off script and live life on your own terms? Today we delve into questions of "should."

We discuss whether or not we are living our family's or society's version of how our lives "should" be, Katy's experiences as a preacher's kid and how having a moral spotlight on her while she was growing up influenced her behavior, and how, as a parent, you can avoid imprinting your desires and expectations on your kids and let them live their own lives. --------------------------------------------

Episode 250: SPOUSE (with Beth M. Howard) Mar 25, 2019
    Show notes

We often chat with expats on The Bittersweet Life, whether they are corporate expats off to a new country every other year, passion expats who follow their dream of living in a foreign land, or anything in between. But what about the expat spouse? What about the person who never signed up for the expat life but finds themselves living it anyway?

This week we talk with Beth M. Howard, author of the new memoir, Hausfrau Honeymoon: Love, Language, and Other Misadventures in Germany. She tells the story of her challenging years as a "trailing spouse" in Germany, how despite her best efforts, she just couldn't seem to find happiness there.

But when you're a trailing spouse expat, you can't just pick up and leave whenever you like. What happens when the success of your marriage hangs on whether or not you can tough it out in a country you don't like living in? What happens when, try as you might, you can't manage to learn your new husband's (and new country's) native tongue? What happens when the man who seemed so evolved in your country turns out to be a bit of a chauvinist in his?

Well, if you're a writer, you curl up in a cozy coffee house and write a book about it, of course! In this interview, Beth reveals the power of admitting that a place just isn't right for you, accepting that the glamorous expat existence you imagined is actually quite lonely, and discovering that sometimes the biggest adventure of all is moving back home.

You can find Beth on Facebook, on her author website, on her pie website (she makes pie!!!), or on her blog, The World Needs More Pie.

    Order her book here.

    Episode 249: PLATEAU Mar 18, 2019
    Show notes

This week's episode is inspired by a letter from one of our long-time listeners. Giovanna wonders what to do after hitting an expat "plateau," when the rapid learning and expanding period of being a new expat inevitably slows down. After a little over a year living on the idyllic Italian island of Ischia (by way of New York, London, and Rome), Giovanna ponders what to do when the novelty of expat life wears off and you're left with just...life. She also asks the question: does moving to the tiny Italian town where her mom was born somehow nullify the life her parents strived to create as immigrants in the States?

We explore these and other topics on our latest episode {PLATEAU}.

Be sure to listen to the end to hear our exciting new announcement!
