    Episode 263: CRACK-DOWN Jun 24, 2019
    Show notes

This week we discuss the new strict laws that have recently been signed into law by Rome's mayor, Virginia Raggi. Feel like enjoying a gelato on the Spanish Steps à la Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday? Think twice! Want to climb on the back of one of the lion statues in Piazza del Popolo to snap that perfect Instagram-worthy shot? Better not. Tempted to strip off and dive into the Trevi Fountain? Only do it if you're willing to pay a hefty fine and risk being exiled from Rome!

Maybe you're thinking, "But Rome wouldn't be Rome without an impromptu picnic on the steps of a monument?" Or perhaps your thoughts run more along the lines of: "About time this city started to be treated with respect!"

Whichever is your view, tune in to this week's episode to hear our take.

Episode 262: JOURNALIST (with Natalie Higgins) Jun 17, 2019
    Show notes

This week, we sit down with a BBC Europe producer Natalie Higgins to discuss the ins and outs of the journalist game, as well as her experiences living abroad in Rome over a decade ago, and her current expat experience in Belgium.

Natalie shares her story of starting out as a university student studying languages, how she came about to decide on journalism as a career, and how her year abroad in Rome (where she just happened to be Tiffany's roommate!) informed and influenced that decision.

She also reveals what it takes to to go after a highly desirable career like journalism, and shares the strategies she used to get her foot in the door and set herself apart from the crowd.

Find out what makes this minuscule "temple" so utterly sublime, which ancient temple it was inspired by, and which domes around the world have been inspired by it.

    Episode 261: ICONS Jun 10, 2019
    Show notes

What are the instantly recognizable symbols that represent your city? And more importantly, what do you think of them?

We hash out the whys behind the icons that make our cities (or the cities we travel to) famous.

We also ask, do you travel to a city because of the icons there, or are they what make that place feel more familiar once you arrive? Is the purpose of a city symbol, like the Seattle Space Needle, the St. Louis Arch, or the Eiffel Tour, to lure travelers to a city, or to make them feel like they have fully seen it when they leave?

And what about gastronomic icons? Can you really say you've been to Seattle if you haven't had a cuppa from the original Starbucks? Would you really leave Lisbon without trying a cream cake from Pastéis de Belém? Can you go to New York without eating a Pastrami sandwich at Katz's Deli? If you don't sample a city's local dish, will you have somehow missed out? Not experienced the true city?

And in that sense, where does city icon end and tourist trap begin? We discuss all this and more on the latest episode of The Bittersweet Life.

Bittersweet Moment #12: BODIES (with Hallie Rubenhold) Jun 06, 2019
    Show notes

On this week's mini-episode, we delve a little deeper with social historian Hallie Rubenhold, author of The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper.

If you haven't listened to the full interview, on Episode 260: THE FIVE, check that out first.

Hallie discusses her fascination with the bodies of people from different eras...not their dead bodies, although we are talking about the victims of Jack the Ripper! But rather, she's fascinated by the physical experiences that people from other eras must have had, and how they differed from our own. We can walk down the same streets that a Victorian prostitute walked down, but we can never feel what she felt, smell what she smelled, or truly know what it felt like to be alive in a different time.

Just one of the many fascinating aspects of history. Hear this mini-interview on this week's Bittersweet Moment.

Episode 260: THE FIVE (with Hallie Rubenhold) Jun 03, 2019
    Show notes

Since Victorian times, people have been obsessed with Jack the Ripper. There are endless volumes full of history about him and the gory deaths of his five victims. What's missing is information about the lives of the women he killed—until now.

This week, we sit down with Hallie Rubenhold, social historian and author of the recently published book, The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper.

In this eye-opening interview, we discover that, contrary to popular narrative, Jack the Ripper's victims were almost certainly not all prostitutes. Rubenhold has painstakingly reconstructed the previously untold stories of these five women, whose greatest tragedy was not being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but rather being born women in the Victorian era.

Instead of focusing on these women's deaths, as virtually all study pertaining to the mystery of Jack the Ripper does, Rubenhold instead focuses on these women's lives, which have been roundly ignored by historians until now. The story of each woman provides a portrait of the underbelly of Victorian London, as well as gives incredible insight into the entire Victorian period, highlighting the vivid contrast between rich and poor and demonstrates how unbelievably precarious life was for women, particularly lower-class women, of the time.

Find Hallie Rubenhold on Twitter, or at her website.

We'll be giving away THREE copies of this book in the coming weeks, so follow us on our social media sites to find out how to win (see below for links).

    Episode 259: CHALLENGE May 27, 2019
    Show notes

Do you like to do hard things? Do you tend to challenge yourself… just because?

On this episode, Katy and Tiffany talk about deliberately seeking out difficult situations, tasks, and habits, in order to promote personal growth, build inner (and outer) strength, and hone a sense of daring—and hopefully have fun too.

Tiffany believes that doing hard things is a muscle that can be trained. If you force yourself to, say, take a cold shower every morning or go three full days without eating, when it come time to ask your boss for a raise, quit your day job, or (gasp!) move to a far-flung country, those challenges won't feel quite so daunting, simply because you'll be used to challenging yourself.

Katy advocates for facing fears head-on. As someone who grew up terrified of death, she spent several months working in a mortuary at age 21, dressing, cleaning, and even shaving dead people. Did that help her conquer her fear? Did observing (and taping) a live hip-replacement surgery cure her of squeamishness?

We discuss these ideas and more on the latest episode of The Bittersweet Life podcast.
