Bittersweet Moment #231: The Passetto of the Borgo: The Papal Escape Route Oct 15, 2025
    Show notes

Another mini-episode, another amazing little-known Roman site that Tiffany explores on our listeners' behalf.

Did you know there is an escape route—hidden inside a medieval wall built in the 9th century—that has been used by popes to flee attacks on the Vatican? The Passetto del Borgo is an 800-meter raised tunnel that stretches from the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican all the way to the safety of Castel Sant'Angleo. It's a place steeped in history and mystery alike.

Come along with us as Tiffany shares details about this fascinating place, that has only recently reopened to the public after more than a decade of restoration.

Bonus! Aurelio also joins us to share his impressions of the Passetto.

Book a visit to the Passetto here.

Episode 599: Staying and Going in the International Teaching World (with Sara Gladding) Oct 13, 2025
    Show notes

What's it like to have children in a foreign country, only to uproot your family and move to a whole new country?

Today's guest tells us all about it on this eye-opening interview.

Longtime listener of The Bittersweet Life and international teacher Sara Gladding sits down with us to tell us her fascinating story. After living for a short time in France and moving back to the States for a period, Sara and her husband decide on a whim to move to Casablanca, Morocco to teach in an international school there. This is where their two boys are born, and where they begin to build a life they love.

But as sometimes happens, there came a point in which their adopted country no longer felt like home. And that's how Sara and her young family ended up in Madrid, just a few months ago.

Having been a newbie, a stayer, a goer, and now a newbie expat again, Sara shares the challenges of each of these inevitable expat phases (particularly felt in the international teaching world); what it feels like to decide nearly a year in advance that she's moving away; and what it's like starting all over (again) and if it gets any easier the more you do it.

If you haven't already, be sure to listen to Episode 538 Stayers, Goers, and Newbies, a discussion that was suggested by today's guest.

Episode 598: Why Are Italians so Loud? Oct 06, 2025
    Show notes

If you've ever spent any significant amount of time in Italy or around native Italians, you will soon have discovered: Italians are loud.

A recent trip to the peaceful Austrian Alps, in which she was confronted with lots and lots of Italians on vacation in a place outisde of Italy, brought home this reality to Tiffany more than ever before. Turns out, when Italians are in a non-Italian context, they seem even louder.

Is there a genetic reason Italians talk more loudly, or is it simply because they are used to living in a loud place and necessarily modulate their voices to match? Or is there a deeper reason?

Also, as an expat whose dream was once to live with and among Italians, how long does it take before your chosen people start to get on your nerves?
