Her prolific reading and her knowledge of books and literature first made her locally famous in Seattle, Washington, where she regularly appears on public radio recommending books. She achieved broader fame with Book Lust, her 2003 guide to good reading. Pearl was named 2011 Librarian of the Year by Library Journal.

Bittersweet Moment #233: The Collapse of Torre dei Conti Nov 12, 2025
    Show notes

Last week, a thousand-year-old medieval tower in Rome partially collapsed. This disaster for history and Rome's patrimony—which could have been much worse—serves as a reminder that Rome's monuments are not forever.

The Torre dei Conti is far from being the only historic building to collapse—partially or completely—in recent years. And antiquity and the Middle Ages witnessed the loss of more treasures of engineering, art, and architecture than we can probably imagine. We think of Rome as eternal (for good reason), but the truth is, Rome's cityscape is slowly but perpetually changing.

Moral of the story: if there's a site in Rome you'd like to visit, do it now. (Before it's gone forever!!)

    P. S. Don't miss your chance to visit Rome with us, on our intimate Rome listener trip, coming up in October 2026. Find out all about it here, or email us for more information!

Episode 602: It Doesn't Have to Be this Way Nov 10, 2025
    Show notes

When you spend a good deal of time in a foreign country, going back home can often be eye-opening.

Why do we do it this way? Can be a suddenly common thought.

Does it have to be this way? You might ask yourself, when considering how things are done in other countries.

As Katy returns to the States after a few weeks in Rome, she finds herself shaking her head at the way some things are done in her home country, as well as wondering why Italy can't get its own act together in certain respects.

Episode 601: Every Pilgrimage Needs Merch Nov 03, 2025
    Show notes

As Katy prepares to leave Rome once again, she and Tiffany muse on the 2025 Jubilee or Holy Year that has taken over Rome this year.

How does Holy Year 2025 compare to past Jubilees? And does the change of pope halfway through the year make a difference?

And what about merch? How odd is it that a Jubilee (an institution that has been occurring every quarter century in Rome for over 500 years) should have a mascot and official merch? Does that cheapen it or make it more current? And whose job is it to design the Jubilee branding?

And how has the city handled this mega-event? Has Rome been up to the task? We discuss on this episode taped on a park bench in Piazza Cavour.
