The Bitcoin Game #76: Andrew "Cybergibbons" Tierney Mar 30, 2020

Welcome to episode 76 of The Bitcoin Game, sponsored by eToro. I'm Rob Mitchell.

Today's interview is with Andrew Tierney, otherwise known online as Cybergibbons. Andrew hacks everything from oil rigs at his day job, to Cryptocurrency hardware wallets and smart locks in his free time. We conducted this interview a bit before COVID-19 had taken over the planet, back in the good old days (a few weeks ago), when we were more worried about malware than going to the grocery store without an N95 mask. Andrew and I discuss hacking hardware wallets, general security, IoT devices, home routers, his day job as a hacker for hire, and other stuff too. I hope you enjoy!

The Bitcoin Game #75: 2014 Interview with Dr. Jochen "Johoe" Hoenicke Feb 28, 2020

Welcome to episode 75 of The Bitcoin Game, sponsored by eToro. I'm Rob Mitchell.

I started podcasting in late 2014, and one of the greatest things to happen in those early episodes was landing an exclusive longform interview with Dr. Jochen "Johoe" Hoenicke, the 2014 Bitcoin Hero. Badass white hat Bitcoin hacker Johoe (at least that's what I call him) rescued insecure Bitcoin UTXOs from Blockchain.info wallets before they could be taken by less-scrupulous hackers. This was after his contributions to understanding the RNG issues with Android Bitcoin wallets in 2013. He also rescued insecure Bitcoin from one other platform, which he admits for the first time in this interview. Some months after this interview, Johoe responsibly published a side-channel attack on a TREZOR, which eventually led to Satoshi Labs hiring him as a TREZOR Cryptographer. Johoe's Bitcoin mempool stats site is yet another contribution he's made to the space.

This is the only audio (or video) interview with Johoe that I'm aware of, and it's worth a listen if you didn't catch it the first time. It's even educational, as Johoe explains concepts like how Bitcoin signatures work and what specifically went wrong with various wallets, in a way that's accessible for non-technical people like myself.

Hope you enjoy my first "rebroadcast" to celebrate 75!

The Bitcoin Game #74: David Jevans of CipherTrace Feb 01, 2020

Welcome to episode 74 of The Bitcoin Game, sponsored by eToro. The Bitcoin Game has been a featured podcast on the LTB Network since 2014!

A few facts about David Jevans: In the late '90s, David attended monthly Cypherpunk meetups in Palo Alto. David hired Nick Szabo to help with IronKey (David's previous business, a secure USB product). And David is currently the founder and CEO of CipherTrace, one of the big three "blockchain analysis" companies.

David's past and present positions give him a uniquely informed perspective, and I was fascinated to hear his takes. We discuss a wide range of topics, from details about CipherTrace's work, to hardware wallets, supply-chain security, CryptoCapital, Quadriga, BTC-E, CoinJoin, OPSEC, and tons more.

The Bitcoin Game #73: Tim Pastoor, P2P Identity Dec 25, 2019

Welcome to episode 73 of The Bitcoin Game, sponsored by eToro. When I started paying attention to Bitcoin Twitter in 2013, I noticed a guy named Tim Pastoor, who seemed pretty well-respected by the Bitcoin Twitter community. He and I eventually became good friends on Twitter, so much so that we hung out for a long afternoon when I visited Amsterdam a few years ago. Tim has been focused on peer-to-peer identity and reputation systems for the past five years, supporting Martti Malmi's work in the space (Martti was the first coder to work with Satoshi on Bitcoin). Twitter's Jack Dorsey recently garnered a ton of attention promoting the goal of decentralized social media, and P2P identity may well be the base layer for such projects. Hope you enjoy our talk!

Oh, and a correction Tim gave me after our interview - Microsoft's Distributed ID project is now called Ion.

The Bitcoin Game #72: eToro's Guy Hirsch Nov 28, 2019

Welcome to episode 72 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. This episode came about in an unexpected way. I had the opportunity to speak with Guy Hirsch (USA Managing Director for eToro) at the CIS conference in Los Angeles. My plan was to grab some sound bites from Guy to use in podcast episodes as part of eToro's sponsorship. But I'm such a curious person that I couldn't help but ask a bunch of genuine questions I had about the platform. Turned out, the brief interview was interesting and informative enough that I decided to release it as a stand-alone episode. So, if you've wondered about eToro after seeing them practically everywhere in the crypto space (not to mention the snazzy eToro commercial with Alec Baldwin), this episode will get you up to speed!

The Bitcoin Game #71: Brian Lockhart Oct 25, 2019

Welcome to episode 71 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell.

I met Brian Lockhart while having lunch at Bitcoin 2019 this summer. Brian recently joined the team at Casa, which happened to have just released details on the Node 2. So this seemed like the perfect time to have Brian as a guest.

I learned a lot from Brian, including how Bitcoin got on his radar (hint: it's the tech), his five-year Bitcoin Rip Van Winkle experience, and the Casa Node 2. We even review some recently highlighted security trade-offs with the Node, as well as my own case of Lightning fever.

The Bitcoin Game #69: Doug Scribner's Smart ATM Aug 05, 2019

Welcome to episode 69 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. I attended Bitcoin 2019 in June and recorded a bunch of great interviews. But only one interview was with someone I kind of knew, and that was Doug Scribner. He's been in the scene a long time, and recalls buying Bitcoin at Porcfest from Charlie Shrem, Erik Voorhees, and Roger Ver. His first major project, WatchMyBit, was a bit ahead of its time (pun unintended). Now he's focused on Vault Logic, a multi-purpose, Bitcoin-capable, "Smart ATM" hardware and software platform.

The Bitcoin Game #68: Paul Sztorc Jul 18, 2019

Welcome to episode 68 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. I introduced myself to Paul Sztorc at Bitcoin 2019and asked him if he'd be up for an interview. I was thrilled that he gave me an unqualified "yes." This ended up being, by far, my longest interview of the conference, and I appreciate that Paul was willing to hang out with me for a big chunk of the second day of the event. I really feel like I got to know Paul in this longest episode I've released in awhile. Hope you enjoy it!

The Bitcoin Game #66: Jeremy Rubin Jul 02, 2019

Welcome to episode 66 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. My second interview at the recent Bitcoin 2019 conference in San Francisco was with Jeremy Rubin, a fascinating guy who has contributed a ton to Bitcoin. We review Jeremy's background, discuss his current project (a BIP intended to aid with scaling pressures), and we revisit his controversial idea of a Bitcoin reorg in the wake of the recent Binance hack. And a lot more! Jeremy provides some pretty compelling content; I bet you'll enjoy this interview.

The Bitcoin Game #65: Jimmy Song Jun 29, 2019

Welcome to episode 65 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell, and I just got back from the Bitcoin 2019 conference in San Francisco. I'm really glad I decided to attend after taking a long break from conferences, as I had a great time and got some really good interviews. I'm going to release them in the order I recorded them, so up first is Jimmy Song.

Oh, I also want listener feedback. This interview is unedited, whereas my typical episodes are heavily edited, with the goal of delivering the most listenable and content-dense experience possible. And I really love editing out dumb things I say! But all that editing takes a lot of time, and it really reduces the amount of content I release. Just comment on this episode's show notes page, or I'm theBTCgame on Twitter. I've got some cool Bitcoin stuff to give away to a few people who give me feedback, in case you need additional incentive.

The Bitcoin Game #64: Farbood Nivi of Coinmine Jun 15, 2019

The other day, an interesting post crossed my path on "Crypto Twitter." This guy was super excited about receiving his Coinmine, a device I was not familiar with. It appeared to be a plug-and-play multi-purpose GPU miner and Bitcoin/Lightning Network full node. And it looked pretty. I was intrigued. I started investigating the product, and quickly discovered that Coinminer's headquarters is right here in Los Angeles. And that's how my interview with Farbood Nivi, CEO and co-founder of Coinmine, was conceived.

I hadn't really considered multi-purpose devices such as a Coinmine, which currently can mine Ethereum, Monero, Zcash and Grin. It's not hard to imagine that future incarnations of this product could bring full Bitcoin/Lightning nodes and speculative Cryptocurrency mining to many new mainstream people who are willing to pay a premium for this level of simplicity. Could cloud-controlled plug-and-play devices theoretically give a centralized party too much control over a lot of miners? Please comment below if you have thoughts!

After arranging this interview, Coinmine offered me a $50 discount for listeners, which can be claimed using the discount code BitcoinGame at checkout, or going to this URL: https://coinmine.com/bitcoingame. The Bitcoin Game will receive a referral fee for purchases using this code, however, that did not influence the content of this episode. Before purchasing, please consider electricity usage in addition to the cost of the miner itself, and note that Bitcoin and Lightning Network features are not active yet.

The Bitcoin Game #60: Dr. Adam Back Part 2 - Liquid Nov 04, 2018

Welcome to episode 60 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. I'm happy to bring to you part two of my interview with Cypherpunk and CEO of Blockstream, Dr. Adam Back. In this episode, we take a deep dive into Liquid, Blockstream's new federated sidechain. There's a lot more to Liquid than I realized, and it's fascinating to hear tons of details about the protocol. I lead us astray with some of my questions, but Dr. Back never fails to drop tons of crypto-knowledge.

And if you missed the first part of my interview, give episode 59 a listen to hear a great Cypherpunk history lesson.

The Bitcoin Game #58: Jennifer Zhu Scott Sep 12, 2018

Welcome to episode 58 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. In January of this year, I saw lots of talk about the World Economic Forum’s speeches and panels in Davos. Even Donald Trump spoke at this event. But the panel I was most interested in was called The Crypto Asset Bubble, and it featured Nobel Prize Laureate Robert Shiller. I didn’t know any of the other panelists, but the one who stuck out to me the most was Jennifer Zhu Scott. She seemed very pro-Bitcoin and was a very eloquent speaker. I wondered why I'd never heard of her before. I immediately invited Jen to be a guest on my podcast, and we finally connected just a bit ago, thanks to Twitter. We cover many topics including the World Economic Forum, her favorite project, China, and her involvement in the hit HBO series, Silicon Valley.

The Bitcoin Game #57: BCH Lead Dev Amaury Séchet Aug 02, 2018

Welcome to episode 57 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. I’m someone who feels a bit like a Bitcoin Maximalist, yet I still really wanted to learn about Amaury Séchet, lead developer of Bitcoin Cash (EDIT: note it's been pointed out that Amaury is the lead dev of Bitcoin ABC, the main client used for BCH, but he isn't technically the lead dev for BCH - apologies for the inaccurate wording). I like that many of Amaury's opinions seem fairly independent, rather than sticking to a party line. In this long-form interview, we talk about Amaury's initial interest in Bitcoin, why he started Bitcoin ABC, the software behind Bitcoin Cash, and what he saw as three critical mistakes he believed would prevent a big block fork from becoming the majority chain at launch. So BCH haters, put down the pitchforks for a second and give this a listen to better understand the French Bitcoiner known as Deadalnix.

The Bitcoin Game #56: Paper Wallet Inventor Peter Kroll Jul 04, 2018

Welcome to episode 56 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. I met Peter Kroll at a Bitcoin conference about a year ago. When I asked Peter what his involvement was with Bitcoin, he told me he created the original Bitcoin paper wallet at BitAddress.org. I was pretty impressed, having used his tool often! Peter had kept it a secret that he was behind BitAddress.org until late 2014, and even since then, he's kept a pretty low profile. We cover a ton of topics in this exclusive interview, including Peter's introduction to Bitcoin, his paper wallet system, Bitcoin's division, and much more.

Welcome to episode 54 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. Back in 2015, I had been waiting and waiting for a Bitcoin conference to be held here in Los Angeles. I finally gave up and booked a trip to the 2015 Texas Bitcoin Conference. Of course, shortly after making arrangements to go to Austin, LA’s first Bitcoin conference, The State of Digital Money, was announced. 2018 marks the third year I've participated in SODM, this time moderating a diverse panel of guests speaking on the broad topic of The Current State of Cryptocurrency.

I'll be giving away a Bitcoin Keychain to someone who comments on this show notes page! The winner can opt to receive a Counterparty token, redeemable for a Bitcoin keychain.

Hello, welcome to episode 52 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. This episode I speak with Mike In Space, longtime creator of Bitcoin memes, and more recently, the host of the comedy series, Bitcoin Car Talk. I’ve never heard Mike interviewed, so I thought it would be fun to learn a bit more about him. The Bitcoin Game #51: Jonas Schnelli, The Bitcoin Core Project Explained Nov 13, 2017

Hello, welcome to episode 51 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. Since my last episode, we’ve seen the Bitcoin 2X fork called off, and just when it seemed everyone could relax for five minutes, the Bitcoin Cash fork went on a full scale blitz. Bitcoin never disappoints in providing interesting times.

In October, the Los Angeles Bitcoin Meetup featured a talk with Bitcoin Core developer Jonas Schnelli. Jonas gave a presentation called The Bitcoin Core project explained: What is Bitcoin Core and who is behind it. I learned a lot, hope you do too.

The Bitcoin Game #50: Jeremy Allaire Oct 06, 2017

Hello, welcome to episode 50 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. This episode also marks three years since I started this podcast.

Back in 2013, when I was first getting into Bitcoin, Jeremy Allaire's interest in the space was a big validation of Bitcoin's importance as a disruptive technology. So I was pretty excited when Brian Cohen introduced me to Jeremy to arrange this interview. In today's podcast, you'll hear Jeremy talk about his early days exploring the Internet, then building companies based on innovative content delivery tools, and eventually, his decision to create Circle, a payment company built on Bitcoin. Jeremy also talks about his brand new open-source project, CENTRE.

How many billions of dollars worth of cryptocurrency did Circle trade in August? Listen and find out!

Hello, welcome to episode 49 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell.

After moderating a Bitcoin scaling panel at the State Of Digital Money in Los Angeles, I followed up by arranging back-to-back interviews with Ryan X. Charles and Eric Lombrozo. I wanted to dig a bit deeper into some issues around scaling and Bitcoin forks. Last episode was my interview with Ryan, and now the yin to Ryan’s yang, Eric Lombrozo.

Hello, welcome to episode 48 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell.

In episode 47 you heard the Bitcoin Scaling panel I moderated at the State Of Digital Money in Los Angeles. While I loved being part of that panel, I really didn’t get to ask many questions. The time allotted to that panel went by so quickly that I really wanted more! So, I was able to arrange interviews with Ryan X. Charles and Eric Lombrozo to dig a bit deeper into some issues around scaling and Bitcoin forks. In this episode I talk to Ryan; you’ll hear Eric in episode 49.

Hello, welcome to episode 47 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. We recently had the State Of Digital Money, the first big Bitcoin conference in Los Angeles since 2015. The Bitcoin Game #41 - Charlie Shrem Jan 14, 2017

Hello, welcome to episode 41 of The Bitcoin Game.I'm Rob Mitchell, and my guest today is Charlie Shrem.

When I got into Bitcoin, the two ways I was most familiar with to buy Bitcoin were to wire money to Mt. Gox in Japan, or go to the local 7-Eleven to send cash to BitInstant. It's not hard to see why BitInstant became one of the biggest Bitcoin companies in the U.S., until it stopped doing business in 2013.

Charlie Shrem was BitInstant's CEO and Co-Founder, he was very active in the community, and I would guess most Bitcoiners see him as someone who took one for the team. Charlie served a two-year sentence for activities related to money laundering, lack of proper licensing, and not filing suspicious activity reports. Of course, many feel he was doing nothing morally wrong, and some argue the legal case wasn't that strong. Surely his prison sentence was an early warning shot to those running Bitcoin businesses.

Now that Charlie Shrem has served his time, he's become active in the community again. In today's episode, Charlie and I discuss his early days in Bitcoin, BitInstant, his new Mainstreet.ky venture, Steemit.com, the People's Bank of China's effect on Bitcoin, and more.

The Bitcoin Game #40: 2016 Year End Special! Dec 30, 2016

My name is Rob Mitchell, and it's hard to believe this is my 40th episode of The Bitcoin Game. I was a fan of Let's Talk Bitcoinfrom day one, since it launched right after I got into Bitcoin. I reached out to Adam B. Levine early on, and worked with the LTB Network in various capacities. During that time, I recorded a number of interviews that weren't quite publishable, for one reason or another. But after attending a Bitcoin Job Fair, I eventually collected enough solid content to release my first episode of The Bitcoin Game on October 15, 2014. A bit under 20 episodes per year isn't so bad, is it?

Regular listeners are aware that my releases have been less frequent in 2016. So I felt extra pressure to do something special for my year-end, 40th episode. I sent messages to over 100 cryptocurrency enthusiasts, inviting them to record a holiday or new year greeting. I made suggestions, such as reviewing 2016 or making predictions for 2017, but I tried to make it open-ended. I ended up with submissions from 26 people who in some cases represent very divergent viewpoints. It’s a jam packed, ad-free show; I hope you enjoy!

    Oh, before I forget…

I want to propose that on January 3rd, the 8th anniversary of Bitcoin's genesis block, every cryptocurrency aficionado take a day to chill on the arguing, so we get a sense of what it's like to be a huge, cohesive group. Can you go so far as to find someone you typically take issue with, and compliment them on something you genuinely value about that person? I’m just asking for one day a year. Who's with me?

The Bitcoin Game #39: Roger Ver Sep 05, 2016

Hello, welcome to episode 39 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell.

Odds are, if you are into Bitcoin, then you know Roger Ver, a.k.a. Bitcoin Jesus. And you possibly are aware that Roger is a huge proponent of increasing Bitcoin's maximum block size as soon as possible. But he's not just talking about it, he's taking action, as you'll hear.

Roger is certainly a doer, and besides all the Bitcoin companies Roger is involved with, he's done things like donate over $150,000 to Ross Ulbrect’s legal defense fund, and offer $250,000 to the charity of Bernie Sanders’ choosing, in exchange for debating Adam Kokesh (for the ultimate socialist vs. voluntaryist debate). Aside from hearing Roger’s take on scaling Bitcoin, we cover a number of subjects, including how much Roger earned from his first Steemit post (it's a lot!). Roger even lets us in on his Bitcoin gut check a few weeks ago, when he sold some of his Bitcoin and bought a prominent privacy-oriented cryptocurrency (listen to find out which one). It was a real treat to have him on the show.

Stay tuned to the very end of the podcast for a blessing from Bitcoin Jesus.

The Bitcoin Game #38: Rodolfo Novak of Coinkite & Opendime Aug 21, 2016

Hello, welcome to episode 38 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell.

It's always great interviewing a knowledgeable person who's not afraid to give an opinion, and Rodolfo Novak is that sort of guest. In this interview, we discuss Coinkite's early days, which started with a Blockchain explorer, custom Bitcoin payment terminals, a widely-used wallet hosting service, and a backend that utilizes hardware security modules of Coinkite's own design. And now, with Opendime, they've moved on to a fascinating new type of Bitcoin hardware that's best use cases are still to be determined.

Rodolfo was also happy to give his opinions on the $70 million Bitfinex theft, the Ethereum fork, the scaling debate, and more. Note that Coinkite's co-founder and CTO is Peter D. Gray (and Peter Todd serves as an advisor to Coinkite).

The Bitcoin Game #37: Back In The Saddle With Christopher Camp Jul 15, 2016

Hello, welcome to episode 37 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell.

Everyone has a unique story. When I started this podcast, I really wanted to talk to Bitcoiners who hadn’t been exposed in Bitcoin media. There are a couple of really interesting local Bitcoin traders I've tried to interview, but surprisingly, sometimes it's easier to get a Bitcoin core developer on the show, than many of the lesser-known people who also have Bitcoin-centric lives.

I met Christopher Camp at my first Bitcoin meetup, but I'd only spoken to him for a few minutes. Now, over three years later, I finally got to sit down with Chris and find out a bit more about him and his interest in Bitcoin. Christoper started an organization called Restart Democracy, he worked for Coinbase, and he currently works for Blockchain.info. For perspective, this was recorded a few weeks ago, before the halving, and when the price of Bitcoin was on a strong upward trajectory, breaching 52-week highs.

The Bitcoin Game #36: The Ethereum Perspective With Arthur Falls Mar 25, 2016

Hello, welcome to episode 36 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell.

I have to admit, as cool as Ethereum has always sounded to me, I haven’t kept up on it. Then, earlier this month, the market cap of Ether surpassed one billion dollars, about a sixth of Bitcoin’s market cap. The price has come down a bit since then, but seeing the high valuation made me realize I’d better get caught up on Ethereum, now that it’s the second biggest cryptocurrency. And who better to help me than Ethereum’s golden-voiced Podcaster, Arthur Falls.

Hello, welcome to episode 34 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell, and my guest is Bitcoin Core developer Peter Todd.

Peter was really open in this interview, and we talked about everything from his relationship with Gavin Andresen, to mistakes he made in his early days working with Bitcoin Core, and a dozen topics in between. A lot of Peter’s focus was on explaining what he feels are the differences between Bitcoin Core and Bitcoin Classic, and why he believes Core is the path to follow at this juncture. Additionally, we touch on Peter's Coinbase double-spend, perceived issues with Replace By Fee, and private blockchains.

    The Bitcoin Game 33 - Hacker J. Maurice (Wiz) Feb 05, 2016

Hello, welcome to episode 33 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell.

    J. Maurice is everything you’d expect in a crypto-anarchist hacker. When I had lunch with him before our interview, Maurice kept his phone powered off and explained he wouldn’t use a credit card, except maybe to pay for already-tracked air travel. After our meal, he used his Trezor to sign a Bitcoin payment on his laptop, via the cafe's Wi-Fi. There's nothing in particular Maurice is trying to hide, he simply wants to live his life free from surveillance of his location and financial activities.

Also known as Wiz, J. Maurice was part of the WizSec team that performed an in-depth analysis of the Bitcoins missing from Mt. Gox. He's also been called Roger Ver's go-to guy when it comes to personal defense from hackers. Maurice has many financial clients too, but as they often turn to him after they've experienced a breach, this work is usually confidential. While Maurice calls Tokyo home, I spoke to him in Los Angeles, as he was just finishing a project here.

The Bitcoin Game 32 - Brock Pierce Jan 12, 2016

Hello, welcome to episode 32 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell.

Today's interview is with Brock Pierce, chairman of the board of The Bitcoin Foundation, and a highly-accomplished VC in digital currency. Brock got involved in digital token entrepreneurship at a very young age, with a focus on gaming, an activity he excelled at. As he reached his mid-twenties, Brock's companies were doing $100,000,000 in business. By the time Bitcoin was released, Brock had become a veteran in the business of digital currency. Brock was primed to recognize the innovation that Bitcoin introduced, and he quickly became one of the most involved venture capitalists in the Bitcoin space. The first half of this episode focuses on Brock's background.

In the second half of my interview, I ask Brock to speak about various aspects of the Bitcoin Foundation, which has faced its share of criticism in the past several years.

The Bitcoin Game 31 - Bitcoin Micropayments Action With Vallerian - Bennett Dec 20, 2015

Hello, welcome to episode 31 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell.

I used to run into Valerian Bennett frequently at Los Angeles Bitcoin Meetups in 2014. I thought he’d disappeared from the Bitcoin scene, only to realize how wrong I was. Valerian has taken his experience in mainstream television production, and combined it with his passion for Bitcoin, to create several online Bitcoin video services, with his partner, payment channels developer James Poole. I hope you enjoy our discussion.

The Bitcoin Game 30 - The Biggest Blockchain Company You've Never Heard Of Nov 17, 2015

Hello, welcome to episode 30 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell.

What’s the oldest blockchain company you can think of? What if I told you a Blockchain company in Estonia called Guardtime was founded before the Bitcoin white paper was released? And what if I told you they are now a highly profitable company, doing large amounts of business with government, the world’s largest defense contractor, and a multinational communication technology company?

I only found out about Guardtime, thanks to Bitcoin journalist Brian Cohen. I was blown away as I learned about the company, because it appears my understanding of the landscape and history of blockchain technology had been flawed.

I immediately requested an interview, and Guardtime’s founder and CEO Mike Gault responded promptly. We set up an interview with Jamie Steiner, Guardtime’s director of business development. I hope you enjoy this interview.

The Bitcoin Game 29 - Bitcoin Journalist Brian Cohen Nov 05, 2015

Hello, welcome to episode 29 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell.

I first became acquainted with Bitcoin journalist Brian Cohen in mid-2014, as we were both active on the then-new Let’s Talk Bitcoin platform. I saw he was doing some fairly serious Bitcoin journalism. Soon after I launched this podcast, I reached out to Brian for an interview. It took a year for us to finally connect, but I finally spoke to the man who digs up a lot of the breaking stories that make Bitcoin news.

Right after our interview, Brian reached out to me to say he was remiss for not thanking the "great" editors he's worked with, in particular, Adam B. Levine, Cheryl Hulseapple, Ruben Alexander, Corinne Dashjr, Denise Levine, and Ina Steiner.

The Bitcoin Game 28 - Would You Trust A Bitcoin Trading Bot? Oct 22, 2015

Hello, welcome to episode 28 of The Bitcoin Game. I'm Rob Mitchell.

When I scheduled an interview with CoinCube CEO Robert Allen, I felt pretty skeptical. My gut told me a cloud-based Bitcoin-trading-bot would be something like a cloud-mining Ponzi-scheme on steroids. I wondered, would this interview be my first exposé? Would my "gotcha" questions be too difficult for Robert to field? Listen to find out!

7/19/16 UPDATE: For the sake of being informative, the gains in my CoinCube-traded account to date are about 50% of the gains had I simply bought and hold Bitcoin in this account. CoinCube's Wave algorithm attempts to avoid bear markets by selling BTC, but my sense is it frequently misses price spikes this way. So, this first experimentation with a Bitcoin trading bot has been a disappontment so far. Of course, past performance is never a guarantee of future results (or everyone would be rich).

The Bitcoin Game 27 - John Barrett of Bitcoins and Gravy Oct 09, 2015

Hello, welcome to episode 27 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell.

I’ve been a podcast listener for many years now, so when I got interested in Bitcoin, listening to Bitcoin podcasts was a natural. I think Adam B. Levine launched The Daily Bitcoin the same day I first searched for Bitcoin podcasts. And I've been hooked on Bitcoin podcasts ever since.

Bitcoins and Gravy has always been a hugely influential show for me. In a sea of podcasts with poor audio quality and barely existent production values, Bitcoins and Gravy sounded as well-produced as any podcast I'd ever heard. Even the short musical pieces between segments were done to perfection. John also experimented with characters and fictional entertainment on some episodes, which really helped Bitcoins and Gravy stand out as something a bit different.

Even after spending time with John at the 2015 Texas Bitcoin Conference, I still find he reverts back to a larger-than-life persona when I listen to him podcast. When I realized John Barrett missed releasing the August 9, 2015, episode of Bitcoins and Gravy, I really took notice. I checked in with John, wanting to make sure he was okay. He said he was, but that he was moving to every other week. But then a couple more weeks went by, and still no new episodes appeared. It was clear something was up, and I was happy he agreed to be on my show.

We spoke for almost two and a half hours, everything from light-hearted talk to John’s very strong views about various subjects. While I thought we’d be bantering more, John really takes a subject and runs with it. Fans of John Barrett and Bitcoins and Gravy won’t want to miss this episode.

The Bitcoin Game 26 - Jeff Garzik The Future of Bitcoin Sep 24, 2015

Hello, welcome to episode 26 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell.

Back some months ago, Los Angeles had its first Bitcoin conference called The State Of Digital Money. Jeff Garzik (Bitcoin Core Developer for BitPay and CEO of Dunvegan Space Systems) was the featured speaker, and he gave a presentation called The Future of Bitcoin. I originally believed the presentation needed the accompanying visual slides, but after giving the audio of Jeff's presentation a fresh listen, I realized the audio is really good on its own. I even found it refreshing to hear a core developer speak on a variety of Bitcoin topics, without having to weigh in on the current contentious block size debate. So relax and enjoy this presentation by Jeff Garzik.

The Bitcoin Game 25 - Mining At Scale With Marco Streng Sep 10, 2015

Hello, welcome to episode 25 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell.

If I were to meet Marco Streng on the street, I’d never guess he hands-on controls perhaps the largest amount of hashing power in the world. Marco is the CEO and cofounder of Genesis mining, a company that mines for profit, and also offers cloud mining. I met Marco back at the State Of Digital Money conference in Los Angeles earlier this year, as he was one of the speakers.

I've always been skeptical about cloud mining. At worst, you're simply putting money into a ponzi scheme. At best, you have to trust that even a legit company doesn’t get hacked, go broke, or have another issue that can beset any company. Yet Marco was able to restore my trust that there are legitimate companies providing cloud-mining services. Of course, there’s always the unknown variables of future price and future difficulty, which can render a net loss, to even the best-laid cloud-mining plans.

Stepping back from profitability concerns, cloud-mining services enable smaller players to help secure the network. So I think anyone who supports the security of Bitcoin can see the benefit of legitimate cloud-mining services, which reduces the friction for eager miners to contribute hash power to the network.

The Bitcoin Game 24 - Exploring Purse with Andrew Lee Aug 27, 2015

Hello, welcome to episode 24 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell.

Earlier this month I got to speak with Andrew Lee from Purse, a company that allows people to use Bitcoin to buy stuff on Amazon, and at pretty large discounts. My own first thought about Purse was that it was some strange company trying to shoehorn its way between Bitcoiners and Amazon. But after talking to Andrew, I now see Purse as a company that is helping to spread the use and adoption of Bitcoin throughout the world. There’s a lot more to Purse than I realized! Hope you enjoy this interview.

The Bitcoin Game 23 - Mainstream Investing With The Bitcoin Investment Trust Aug 14, 2015

Hello, welcome to episode 23 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell.

I decided to experiment with buying Bitcoin a new way; I bought shares of the Bitcoin Investment Trust. The trust is the first, and I believe the only current way a U.S. citizen can add an investment in Bitcoin to a recognized retirement account. You can buy shares of the Bitcoin Investment Trust with symbol GBTC using a standard brokerage account, just like buying a stock or ETF. You could argue that one doesn't actually own Bitcoin with these shares, since a third party holds the private keys, and there are inherent risks — just ask Patrick Byrne. But the fund, and this episode, are likely skewed slightly towards people interested in investing in Bitcoin for the long term, using an investing platform they are already familiar with, while shielding themselves from the learning curve still required to hold Bitcoin securely.

In today’s episode I speak with Michael Sonnenshein, director of Sales & Business Development for Grayscale, one of several companies founded by Barry Silbert. Based on Grayscale's first quarter financials, the total number of Bitcoin Investment Trust shares sold was approximately 1.41 million, which has a value of over $37 million dollars (at the current rate of $265/Bitcoin).

Potential fund buyers need to make sure they understand the risks associated with Bitcoin, investing in Bitcoin using a fund, as well as the fees and premiums that are associated with buying this fund.

Would you ever buy shares of the Bitcoin Investment Trust, or recommend it? Please let me know your thoughts by commenting below!

7/19/16 Update: For anyone who bought GBTC (Bitcoin Investment Trust) back when this episode aired, the gains have substantially surpassed a 100% investment in Bitcoin. I will go on a limb and say this is because the demand for GBTC has been a lot greater than the supply (probably due to mainstream and retirement investors wanting Bitcoin exposure). So the market price of GBTC is way above the net asset value of the Bitcoin that the trust holds. With two new Bitcoin ETFs expected in coming months/years, it's possible that new Bitcoin investment vehicles will cool off the demand for GBTC, so I'm not sure if buying GBTC on the open market is wise at current values. However, if you're a "qualified investor" who is up for a large initial investment and year waiting period, you can buy GBTC at par with the current price of Bitcoin, so that may be a smarter investment (if you believe in Bitcoin, and don't think we'll have a financial/societal "reset" before then). Of course, anything could happen to Bitcoin and/or GBTC. And be very aware, I'm definitely not an investment advisor, this is just my amateur read of the situation.

The Bitcoin Game 22 - Blockchain Technology Panel from SODM15 Jul 31, 2015

Hello, welcome to episode 22 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell.

In today’s podcast you’ll hear the Blockchain Tech panel from the State Of Digital Money conference, which took place earlier this year in Los Angeles. I thought it was a very fun panel that was filled with many insights. You might say the panel was stacked a bit on the side of blockchain tech over Bitcoin, and Bitcoin maximalists (amongst others) may not agree with some of the points made. But hopefully everyone can still appreciate hearing ideas and discussion from very bright people in the field.

Some interesting tidbits: It’s Jeff Garzik you’ll hear yell “not true” from his seat in the audience, and Connie Gallippi also speaks from the crowd. I was surprised to learn the source of inspiration for Medici (the blockchain-based stock exchange being pioneered by Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne).

On the panel, you’ll hear (in order of appearance):

Moderator: Alex Rozman Senior Manager in the Deloitte Transactions and Business Analytics LLP @rozman7

Craig Sellars Co-Founder and CTO for Tether @Tether_to

Eric Benz VP of Payments at BitReserve @EricBenz84

The Bitcoin Game 21 - Bitcoin Option Trading Jul 17, 2015

Hello, welcome to episode 21 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. This podcast is my opportunity to learn from all types of people involved in cryptocurrency. For today’s episode I spoke to Marco Cuesta of Alt-Options. This company is aiming to bring a high-end option trading platform to Bitcoin. Alt-Options earned 2nd place at the startup pitch competition at Inside Bitcoins in Chicago shortly after this interview took place, and the company is planning to go live with Bitcoin option trading by the end of summer. In the meantime, you can sign up for a beta account and test your option leveraging skills on paper. We also talk a bit about the College Crypto Network and the Crypto Castle in San Francisco. The Bitcoin Game 16 - Meeting Bruce Fenton And Scott Rose Apr 22, 2015

Welcome to episode 16 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. I was excited to talk to Bruce Fenton at the recent Texas Bitcoin Conference. It was a fun conversation, and I think it gives a good sense of Bruce as a person. He answered my questions about the exclusive Satoshi Roundtable Bitcoin retreat he organized, and filled me in about his impressive background in financial management. Our interview concluded with passionate exposition by Bruce. Note that we spoke before Bruce was voted in by the Bitcoin Foundation Board as their new Executive Director. I also spoke with Scott Rose, who I was familiar with from his popular comedic video series, "Shit Bitcoin Fanatics Say." Scott's background as an actor and a hired speaker for Apple, combined with his passion for Bitcoin, makes him a great cryptocurrency proponent. This is demonstrated in his recent Austin Nerd Night presentation called "Bitcoin 101: What Happens When We Decentralize Money?". I often think Bitcoin needs better P.R., and Scott did his part with this presentation. If you wonder why you hear traffic in the background, most of my interviews from this conference took place in the patio area outside of the Moody Theater. This is where the exhibiter's booths were located, and also where most people congregated when they weren't watching presentations. The Bitcoin Game 15 - Fun & Interviews At The Texas Bitcoin Conference Kickoff Party Apr 16, 2015

Welcome to episode 15 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. While I usually try to be extremely professional on my podcast, this episode from the Friday night Kickoff Party for the Texas Bitcoin Conference may expose a slightly different side of me. I went straight from Austin–Bergstrom International Airport to Maria's Taco Express, where the party was held. I arrived to the sound of live music and a large patio area completely packed with Bitcoiners. I made my way through the crowd and checked in with the very nice Linda Snow. She handed me drink tickets and offered to keep an eye on my bags, which I appreciated. I went to the outdoor bar and ordered a beer and a shot of tequila. Hey, this was a party, and I was ready to have fun! But because only drinks were available at the outdoor register, and I was in a hurry to join the party, I skipped going inside to order food. I didn't think about how long it had been since I had eaten, or how much an empty stomach might intensify the effects of the alcohol I was consuming. Lesson learned! Before I knew it, I had my phone out and I started interviewing every friendly face I bumped into. That ended up being a team from A.I. Coin, Texas-based Sheldon Weisfeld from CoinVault ATM, the Swiss-based team behind ShapeShift, and finally I spoke with Joey Krug from Augur. It was quite a lot of fun! I hope you'll tune in for upcoming episodes of The Bitcoin Game that will include interviews with Bruce Fenton, Erik Vorhees, Shawn Wilkinson, John Bush, Scott Rose, and many many more. Don't worry, the rest of my interviews were executed in a totally sober state, and with first-rate sound quality. Though I may have felt some intoxication from being around so many impressive Bitcoiners! The Bitcoin Game 13 - Rivetz And Trusted Computing With Steven Sprague Mar 26, 2015

Welcome to episode 13 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. For today’s episode I spoke with Steven Sprague, an expert in an under-utilized technology called the Trusted Execution Environment that exists in chips inside many of our devices. Steven leveraged his extensive knowledge in this field to launch Rivetz, a company dedicated to bringing personal security to Bitcoin transactions, and more. The capabilities of this technology give me hope that there will soon be a migration past the current broken security paradigm. And perhaps Bitcoin’s need for ultimate security will be a catalyst to expand the use of this technology. The Bitcoin Game #11 - Paul Puey - How Bitcoin Will Revolutionize Mobile Payments Mar 01, 2015

Welcome to episode 11 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. It's great to live in a big city such as Los Angeles because of the opportunity to network with people doing amazing things in the Bitcoin space. While Paul Puey founded Airbitz from San Diego, he still has managed to attend enough Los Angeles Bitcoin meetups that he seems like a local. In January of this year, Airbitz was selected by Plug and Play to take part in their Startup Camp Accelerator in Silicon Valley. Paul still had no problem trekking back to another Los Angeles Bitcoin Meetup, this time to present a compelling view of Bitcoin's place in the future of mobile payments. Paul also talks about the Airbitz mobile wallet, an app for Android and iOS that is aimed squarely at making Bitcoin as easy to use for mobile payments as possible. The Bitcoin Game #10 - Talking Taxes With Jake Benson Feb 15, 2015

Welcome to episode 10 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. I wanted to really have fun and celebrate this 10th episode. I never knew if I'd be able to get ten episodes out, so this is quite an achievement for me. With that in mind, I decided to focus on something the entire cryptocurrency community loves to talk about… Taxes! While cryptocurrency taxes may not be a favorite topic, I actually had a lot more fun than I expected, speaking to Jake Benson, CEO and founder of LibraTax. This was my opportunity to ask every tax accounting question I could think of related to cryptocurrency. I also spent a little time with LibraTax, and I wasn’t convinced it had the features I needed. But after getting some tips from Jake on hidden capabilities and techniques, I think I’ll be using LibraTax to help with my accounting this year. So if you think you might want to give LibraTax a spin, listen to the entire episode, and you'll get some specific tips towards the end. While Jake certainly seems like a tax expert to me, please do not use this podcast for personal tax advice. Consult with a tax professional, or do your own research to make sure you file your taxes correctly. There certainly are gray areas when it comes to tax regulation, especially with new financial technologies. So there's often an aggressive and a conservative approach that can be taken. I apologize that the content discussed in this episode may not be of any bearing to some listeners. I didn't bury the magic word too deep this time, so give the episode a chance, and maybe you'll find the discussion is more interesting than you expect. Or maybe not. I'll be attending the Texas Bitcoin Conference in March (not April), please say "hi" to me if you'll be there too. The Bitcoin Game #8 - Danno Ferrin, Bitstamp & Visualization Jan 18, 2015

Welcome to The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. This episode's page on Let's Talk Bitcoin is: https://letstalkbitcoin.com/blog/post/the-bitcoin-game-8-danno-ferrin-bitstamp-visualization Danno Ferrin's current day job is working on Java for the Oracle Corporation. But for fun, Danno uses his programming skills to create visualization software for the BItcoin blockchain. In the wake of the large Bitstamp theft, Danno has been able to analyze some of the Bitcoin movements, using his software. Danno might be one of the most knowledgeable people about the loss, other than insiders like Bitstamp employees and the actual hacker (I have not been able to secure an interview with these parties). He speculates on what happened, and we also discuss a few other topics. I hope you enjoy this interview with Danno Ferrin. The Bitcoin Game #7 - Bitcoin Hero Jochen AKA Johoe Dec 21, 2014

Welcome to episode #7 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell.

The white hat hacker known as Johoe ("Yo-ho") rescued over 870 Bitcoins recently from addresses compromised by a temporary bug in Blockchain.info's web wallet. Today I'm honored to introduce Jochen ("Yo-hen"), who works as a computer science researcher at a university in Germany, and is known on BitcoinTalk.org as Johoe. Bitcoin is a hobby Jochen took up in early 2013, as he first discovered the repeated R value issue, due to a 2013 bug in Android's random number generator that affected the security of some Bitcoin wallet apps.

Jochen has literally raced against other hackers to grab Bitcoin in compromised addresses, knowing his opponents have no intention of returning any Bitcoin they grab first.

Aside from this being the first audio interview of Jochen aka Johoe, this is also the first time he tells the Bitcoin world that it was he who returned 17 Bitcoins to Counterparty, after their Counterwallet had a temporary bug earlier this year that also produced repeating R values.

Jochen talks about a call he recently received from Coinbase, as well as the trade-offs of Coinbase vs. Blockchain.info wallets.

The Bitcoin Game #6 - Adam B. Levine of Let's Talk Bitcoin Dec 06, 2014

Hello, welcome to The Bitcoin Game #6. I'm your host, Rob Mitchell.

I spoke to Adam B. Levine a few weeks ago. We talked about his original Bitcoin podcast, The Daily Bitcoin, and why it morphed into Let's Talk Bitcoin, with Andreas Antonopoulos and Stephanie Murphy. In this interview, I found out how insanely early Adam wakes up each day, his takes on crypto crowd-funding platforms, as well as some of his grave concerns about potential U.S. governmental actions against crypto-projects that have benefitted from crowd-funding. Adam talked a bit about Tokenly, his newest entrepreneurial venture, while also letting me know about his newest technological passion (our conversation left me wondering if Adam might ever consider leaving the Bitcoin space for a fertile technology space that isn't being threatened by any governments). And as a fairly new podcaster on Adam's network, I got to ask Adam questions about my position, and the Let's Talk Bitcoin network in general. If you're a fan of Adam B. Levine, I think this will be an interesting show for you.

Listen for the magic word, and submit it to your LetsTalkBitcoin.com account to claim your share of the weekly distribution of LTBcoin. The magic word must be submitted by 2pm (Pacific Time / GMT-8:00) on December 12.

The Bitcoin Game #5 - L.A. Bitcoin Meetup with Brock Pierce & Micah Winkelspecht Nov 22, 2014

Welcome to episode five of The Bitcoin Game. I'm your host, Rob Mitchell. In this episode I present an uncut "fireside chat" between Bitcoin Foundation board member and longtime digital currency entrepreneur Brock Pierce, and Gem CEO/founder Micah Winkelspecht. Their conversation is followed by an audience Q&A (apologies for the sound quality of the audience questions).

This was a Los Angeles Bitcoin Meetup event held at the beautiful new Gem headquarters in Venice Beach, California, on November 13, 2014. Andreas Antonopoulos had been scheduled to speak that evening, but his flight from the East Coast was canceled, and as hard as he tried (including piloting a Cessna to a nearby airport), he was unable to make it. Fortunately, both Brock and Micah are amazing and knowledgeable Bitcoin speakers, so I believe everyone who attended felt extremely satisfied. There were too many topics covered to list, but below are relevant links from the discussion.

The Bitcoin Game #1 - Southern California Bitcoin Job Fair Oct 05, 2014

Welcome to the first episode of The Bitcoin Game. I was fortunate that Dan Roseman of the Bitcoin job board Coinality.com, decided to bring his Bitcoin Job Fair to Southern California on October 4th, 2014. The event was held at the Plug And Play Tech Center in Santa Monica.

In this podcast you'll hear interviews with principal members of four Bitcoin businesses that were hiring at the job fair (there were many more than just these four!). I started with a quick chat with ExpressCoin CEO Will Wheeler, then talked to BitWage founder and CSO Jonathan Chester. Next I had a chat with Micah Winkelspecht, founder and CEO of Gem (not to be confused with Gems), and finally, I spoke with Jacob Norte, Founder & CEO of Malibu Bitcoin.

All music is either my own, or recorded at jams with my friends.
