#220: COVID, Vaccines, and the Future of Racing Oct 29, 2020
    Show notes

In today’s episode, Tim, Jess, and Andy speculate on when racing will return. They not only talk about the latest news from people and organizations across the running industry, but also the best-case scenarios, worst-case scenarios, and how all this might affect new runners. The trio finishes chatting about virtual races and how those will play a role in the near and distant future.

👉 One note of warning - some of the predictions are pretty grim. Even though the tone might be upbeat when talking about the issues, please know that the LAST thing we want is for running to be delayed any longer than absolutely necessary. But Tim, Jess, and Andy tried to be as realistic as possible.

    #219: Running Through Our 30s, 40s, 50s, and Beyond! Oct 22, 2020
    Show notes

This week on The BibRave Podcast we feature a conversation with Tim, Julia, and physical therapist, Matt Walsh. Matt is a Portland-based PT with over 33 years of clinical experience across sports like running, golf, rugby, and cross country skiing. Matt is also Julia’s PT which is how we came to know him!

We talk with Matt about what it’s like to run throughout the decades of our life, what we can expect, and how to ideally prepare for aging as a runner. It’s a great look at common pitfalls that most runners encounter, and there is a ton of really interesting biomechanics in our discussion. We enjoy our chat with Matt and hope his breakdown of the human body is helpful to you as a runner!

#218: In Memoriam - Our Friend Tony Banovich Oct 16, 2020
    Show notes

We come to you this week with very heavy hearts after the loss of our dear friend, Tony Banovich. Tony was a running icon in the Montana running scene, and as Race Director of The Missoula Marathon he catapulted the event to national recognition as one of the best races in the country. Tony was an impossibly kind, warm, positive, funny, and energetic human, an incomparable ambassador for the sport of running, and a dear friend. We already miss him terribly.

Tony suffered from a severe heart condition (cardiomyopathy), and he shared more details about his health on The BibRave Podcast back in February. As a small tribute to Tony and to further awareness of his condition (education he was eager to spread), we’ve decided to re-air some clips of that episode along with a few others from his interview in 2019. Tim, Jess, and Julia also offer some additional thoughts and memories of Tony in the intro.

We’re so sad to have lost such a great person, and our hearts go out to his wife Erin, their children, and their grandchildren.

#217: Navigating Uncertainty - With Dr. Justin Ross Oct 08, 2020
    Show notes

We’re happy to welcome Dr. Justin Ross back to The BibRave Podcast this week! Dr. Ross has been a regular guest on the show, and as a clinical psychologist specializing in health & wellness psychology, human performance, and sports psychology. We were extremely interested in his thoughts and guidance on navigating uncertainty in the times of COVID-19.

Tim and Jess cover a range of topics with Dr. Ross (starting with an AMAZING breakfast sandwich recipe!). They talk about role confusion (hello parents-as-teachers!) and the resulting anxiety, modeling resiliency especially for our kids, co-workers, and partners, dealing with fear, and redefining values when there are no races on offer.

#216: Brenda Martinez is BACK Oct 02, 2020
    Show notes

We’re excited to bring you another episode of The BibRave Podcast! This week, we talk with Brenda Martinez, an American track and field athlete who specializes in middle distance races like the 800 and 1500 meters. Brenda has been struggling with injuries for the past three years, so Tim and Jess were excited to see how she’s doing in the run-up to the 2020/2021 Olympic games.

In addition to inspiring the hell out of us with her on-track performances (defying adversity and qualifying for the Olympics after getting tripped in her main event), Brenda also hosts an amazing training camp to empower young athletes called BMART Camp. Tim and Jess talk with Brenda about the camp, how it started, and why it’s so important to her. And of course, the trio obviously geeks out over plenty of coffee, journaling, and gear talk. 😉

#215: The Best TV Show Characters of All Time Sep 25, 2020
    Show notes

We’ve got a doozy for y’all this week, and something decidedly NOT about running! In this episode of The BibRave Podcast, Tim, Jess, and Andy discuss their top five TV show characters of all time!

This was an entertaining and nostalgic discussion, with everyone listing their opinions and rationales for who made their list! Interestingly enough, the BibRave Team has ZERO overlaps on their lists, showing very distinct TV show and personality preferences. Spoiler alert - judging by his list, Tim basically only likes horrible, horrible TV show characters. 🤣

We don’t want to give away too much of the list of favorites, so the show notes are going to be a bit thin this week. Guess you’ll just have to listen and hear for yourself!

#214: Should Runners WANT to Add Muscle Weight? Sep 18, 2020
    Show notes

Tim and Jess are talking to Dr. Justin Jelen, a chiropractic physician based in Portland, OR who specializes in treating athletes this week on The BibRave Podcast!

While there are an infinite number of injury-related and biomechanical questions for someone like Dr. Jelen, this conversation is pretty focussed on strength training and muscle gain. Specifically, Tim and Jess ask Dr. Jelen - should runners WANT to add muscle weight? It’s a very interesting and important topic that Dr. Jelen does a great job answering, providing loads of meaningful insight and actionable advice throughout the conversation.

#213: How Can We Welcome More Black Runners? Sep 10, 2020
    Show notes

Please welcome Tony Reed, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the National Black Marathoners Association to this week's episode of The BibRave Podcast!

Tony’s story is a fascinating one, and he tells Tim and Jess about all the great work organizations like the NBMA are doing to grow the number of Black runners in our sport. They discuss some of Tony’s inspiration behind starting the NBMA, along with some of the challenges he’s experienced on the road to growing the group to more than 16,000 members.

We really loved this conversation with Tony, and we’re proud to highlight such a shining and inspiring leader in our sport!

#212: Ryan Hall Wants to Eat Your Breakfast Sep 04, 2020
    Show notes

Buckle up, we’ve got a great episode of The BibRave Podcast for you this week! In Episode 212, Tim and Jess are talking with a man who needs no introduction, THE Ryan Hall!

You likely know Ryan as the American record holder in the Half Marathon (59:43 👀), as well as the only American runner to break 2:05 in the Marathon (2:04:58 😳)! But if you’ve been following his IG since 2016 when he retired from professional running, you know that he’s been on quite the bodybuilding journey.

Tim, Jess, and Ryan talk a lot about diet and weight training - the pros and cons of heavy weight training, what works for Ryan, and some of the crazy numbers behind his bulk. They also chat about Ryan’s (potentially crazy) decision to run his first Ultra Marathon! Ryan has only run about five times in 2020, and he’s going to be basically running in a totally new body, so this race is sure to be interesting at the very least!

#211: Zach Miller, Amanda Basham, and Picking the Right Gear (plus special guest, BUFF®!) Aug 28, 2020
    Show notes

We’re excited to bring you something a bit different this week on The BibRave Podcast! In partnership with our friends at BUFF® - makers of the amazing multi-function headwear and long-time BibRave partner brand - we’ve got a two-part show for you.

In the first part, Tim talks with BUFF® athletes Zach Miller - who you might remember from his many ultrarunning accomplishments and at times off-the-grid lifestyle, plus his appearance on Episode 113 of The BibRave Podcast - and Amanda Basham, a super cool (and bacon-obsessed) badass ultrarunner in her own right. They talk about running gear and what Zach and Amanda look for in running equipment - especially for ultras when having the right gear is particularly important. They also talk about what Zach and Amanda look for in brand partners and sponsorships, which was super cool to hear.

The second part is Tim’s conversation with Media Marketing Manager at BUFF®, Casey Rolig! They talk about the moment BUFF® is having right now due to COVID-19 and face coverings being required in most places, plus some really cool product development issues focused on sustainability. Then Tim asks Casey what he looks for in BUFF® sponsored athletes.
