#97: Mastering Fuel and Hydration for your upcoming Half or Full Marathon Jun 15, 2018
    Show notes

For Episode 97 of The BibRave Podcast, we’re excited to partner with our friends at Gatorade Endurance to bring to you a conversation with Katie Hynes, a sports nutritionist who is also a speedy marathoner that runs with the BibRave Portland crew. You may remember Katie from her blog post on how to stay “on pace” with your eating habits over the holidays, and her feature on The BibRave Bonus Mile: Safety Edition.

First, we discuss how Katie’s passion for running inspired her to pivot her career to become a sports nutritionist. We then dive into the science behind hydration and nutrition, as it relates to endurance events, what adaptations happen in the body that make it trickier to master, and how runners should approach finding a good strategy for their own body. As with most things in life, the key is to focus on what’s best for YOU.

    #96: Nutrition & Mental Fitness - a conversation with Matt Fitzgerald Jun 08, 2018
    Show notes

For Episode 96 of The BibRave Podcast, we’re so excited to bring you one of our favorite authors and thought leaders in running, Matt Fitzgerald! And a special thanks to our awesome sponsors at Athlinks - the largest results database for competitive endurance athletes in the world!

Matt is a prolific author and has written some of the best running and nutrition-related books out there. His latest is The Endurance Diet, which he references throughout the episode and which clearly builds on his previous hits Racing Weight, Diet Cults, and The New Rules of Marathon and Half-Marathon Nutrition. They also talk about one of Tim’s favorites, which was prescribed by his coach (Sensei Chris) before the Tokyo Marathon, How Bad Do You Want It?

Tim, Julia, and Matt discuss everything from breakfast regimens and how elite runners eat (spoiler - it’s pretty much everything) to fad diets, and the difference between mental fitness and mental toughness. Matt is an extremely intelligent, articulate, and well-informed guy, so this episode covers a lot. Hope you enjoy!

#95: Coffee Talk and Seattle Race Weekend! Jun 01, 2018
    Show notes

We’re STOKED to bring you Episode 95 of The BibRave Podcast! In this week’s episode we check in with Tim, Jess, and Julia to hear what’s new and what’s in store. They cover everything from dog bites (this time NOT Julia) and other injuries to new race plans!

Next, they move on to pretty much everyone’s favorite subject - coffee! The hosts talk about how they take their coffee (Black? Cream? Sugar?), their preferred brew methods, favorite beans and roasts, and how coffee factors into their pre-race routines.

Then they close out the show talking about plans for Rock ‘n’ Roll Seattle! All three are headed up to Seattle for race weekend, and BibRave has partnered with Brooks Running to create the ultimate traveler’s resource - the Infinite Energy Seattle City Guide, presented by Brooks. They also created a killer interactive Google Map Guide with all the best points of interest included, perfect for referencing on the go!

#94: What to know about Nutrition and Supplements May 25, 2018
    Show notes

We’re excited to bring you Episode 94 of The BibRave Podcast where we invite two of our faves, Cholesterol Dave (aka Dr. Dave Harmon) and ARX Josh (aka Dr. Josh Russell), back to the podcast. In this week’s episode we dive deep into what the medical industry gets wrong about nutrition, specifically as it relates to our diets and supplements.

As runners, we’re always looking to optimize some part of our health, performance, and recovery, and supplements can be a big part of that, whether it’s protein powder or daily vitamins. We first explore WHY it’s so hard to get good information on what’s “good” for us when it comes to food and nutrition. We then take a close look at supplements, how they are regulated (or not), which ones runners should consider taking, and how we can do our own research. Spoiler - if you’ve taken krill/fish oil, vitamin C or D, zinc, or protein powder, you’ll want to listen to this episode! We end with an interesting perspective on how the lack of nutrition education impacts where medical professions focus their knowledge and interventions.

As always, you can find us on social - Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram! And if you haven’t yet, please leave us a review on the iTunes store! Thanks and enjoy.

#93: Improving your running life with your mind May 18, 2018
    Show notes

We’re excited to bring you Episode 93 of The BibRave Podcast where we invite Dr. Justin Ross, clinical psychologist, who originally joined us in Episode 26: Probing the Runner Mind. Dr. Ross specializes in a number of health psychology-related areas, including sports and performance, pain management, eating disorders, stress reduction, bariatrics, and mindfulness-based interventions.

In our conversation with Dr. Ross, we dive deep into the idea of mental toughness and how it can improve performance - changing our perception of effort-level and discomfort or pain. We then talk about how to start creating process-based goals and use mindfulness as part of our training. We love having Dr. Ross on because he breaks down simple steps for us to pull through the positivity of running, whether it relates to our own doubt or a performance on race day.

#91: A Race Across America and some Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago favorites May 04, 2018
    Show notes

Thanks for joining us for another episode of The BibRave Podcast. In episode 91 we bring you a twofer. We highlight an upcoming documentary GODSPEED: A Race Across America, which features one of the most difficult endurance races in the world, and then we discuss one of our favorite races - the Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago Half Marathon - with some of our fellow BibRave Pros and Rock ‘n’ Bloggers.

First, we chat with Brad Cooper and Jerry Schemmel, whose documentary GODSPEED features them taking on the Race Across America (RAAM), a 3000+ mile cycling race with over 175,000+ feet of climbing. Brad and Jerry gave us insight into how they decided to take on this adventure and what they learned through this life changing 7-day challenge. The documentary will be out only on May 22, so visit godspeedcycling.com to find a theater near you.

Next, we bring you the second in a series of six features where we highlight an upcoming Rock ‘n’ Roll race. And this time, it’s one of our hometown favorites - Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago! Rock ‘n’ Blogger Alina Juarez and BibRave Pro Lindsey McRoberts share some tips on what they love about this race and the city of Chicago (landscape architecture & breaded steak sandwiches? Yes please!).

There are a lot of great takeaways in this episode, so we hope you enjoy it. Be sure to share it with your fellow runner buds! And don’t forget to check us out on Spotify - streaming all your favorite episodes! And, as always, you can find us on social - Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
