Evidence for belief in the God of the bible #9 Was the new testament Forged? Nov 06, 2022

Show notes

A Christadelphian Video: The New Testament contains 27 books; 26 of these have named writers who were either Apostles or companions of Apostles. But how can we be certain that the books were really written by these authors and not by someone later who passed them off as authentic? This video examines some of the evidence which shows that the New Testament was really written by the individuals whose names are associated with those books, the Apostles who knew Jesus or their companions.

The evidence for the authorship of the New Testament books comes in two forms. The first is from the unanimous witness of the early church. Authors writing soon after the end of the New Testament period quoted from the New Testament books, and by the middle of the second century they were referring to them by name; without exception they used the names that we currently have for the writers of these books. All the manuscripts that exist of the New Testament attribute the books to the writers that we know, without exception.

The New Testament books also contain a great deal of internal evidence which connects them to their stated writers. A comparison of the letters of Paul with the account in Acts shows that the two fit together in great detail, something which would be almost impossible to produce if either was forged. The details in the Gospels also connects them with the Apostles, and it is clear that Acts was written by a companion of the Apostle Paul. Passages to look at: John 5:2; John 21:24,25; 1 John 1:1-4; Luke 1:1-4; 2 Thessalonians 2:2; 3:17; Galatians 6:11

Evidence for belief in the God of the bible #8 Why believe the old Testament Nov 05, 2022

Show notes

A Christadelphian Video: The Old Testament is the foundation on which the message of the New Testament is built.

There is a considerable amount of evidence to show that we can trust the Old Testament. Archaeology shows that it is historically accurate, comparison of different accounts within it shows that even details agree, and there is a consistency of teaching which is difficult to achieve given the number of different writers and the fact that its writing spans a period of many centuries.

The Old Testament also contains fulfilled predictions of future events, and Jesus and the Apostles spoke of its reliability and importance. Archaeology shows a detailed correspondence with the Old Testament narrative back to about 1000BC; before this the evidence is a little more sparse, but the biblical record and archaeology show a general agreement. This is confirmed by undesigned coincidences, points of insignificant detail where one account fits completely with insignificant details in another account.

The Old Testament was written against a cultural background where religion was not concerned with morality, where polytheism was the rule, and which encouraged actions like child sacrifice. The Bible message is quite different from this, and is consistent over a thousand years. This shows control by a mind which is greater than that of any human being. Finally, Jesus and the Apostles endorsed the Old Testament.

They knew that the Old Testament was reliable and they said so. Passages to look at: Deuteronomy 6:4; Luke 16:31; John 10:34-36
