Evidence for belief in the God of the bible #10 Did the Apostles Know Jesus? Nov 07, 2022

Show notes

A Christadelphian Video: This question is frequently asked on the internet; it is really a question of whether the writers of the New Testament knew Jesus, or whether they were writing in a later generation, as many sceptics suggest.

The evidence is that all the New Testament books were written in the time of the Apostles, and the books contain details which show that the Apostles were involved in writing them. We can therefore trust the books of the New Testament to give us a reliable account of Jesus’ life and teaching. The movements of the Apostle Paul can be tracked using the Acts of the Apostles, and from this it is possible to calculate a very accurate chronology of the New Testament, including the Gospels.

This shows that Acts, the Gospels and the Letters were all written before 70AD, well within the lifetime of the Apostles. The Gospels tell us of 12 of Jesus’ disciples who travelled with him; two of these wrote Gospels, and the evidence is that Mark’s Gospel used Peter as a source. Luke had plenty of opportunity to talk to people who knew Jesus and to visit the places where Jesus’ activities took place.

The Apostle Paul only met Jesus after Jesus was raised from the dead, but the letters of Peter and John were written by disciples of Jesus who had travelled with him while the remaining two letters (James and Jude) were written by Jesus’ brothers. Passages to look at: John 21:24,25; 1 John 1:1-4; 2 Peter 1:16-21; Galatians 1:11-2:2
