War in the Middle East - The Bible has the solution. Nov 11, 2024
    Show notes

A @Christadelphians Video: Description: The Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxies, Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, have never recognised Israel’s right to exist. The Middle East conflict is the latest manifestation of this fundamental hostility between the Jewish State and some of its near neighbours. Peace will not be restored until God makes a decisive intervention. The Lord Jesus will return, and the establish God’s kingdom. Then all will know that “the LORD is the Most High over all the earth”. # Summary This presentation discusses the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and how the Bible's prophecies are being fulfilled in the current events. The speaker examines the inability of the United Nations, the United States, and Russia to provide a lasting solution to the conflict. He then delves into the prophecy found in Psalm 83, which describes the nations that have conspired against Israel, and how this prophecy is being realised in the present day. The speaker emphasises that the solution to the conflict lies in God's intervention, as evidenced by past biblical events, and that the ultimate goal is for people to recognise God's sovereignty over the Earth. # Highlights 🌍 The presentation discusses the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and how the Bible's prophecies are being fulfilled in the current events. 🔍 The speaker examines the inability of the United Nations, the United States, and Russia to provide a lasting solution to the conflict. 📜 The speaker delves into the prophecy found in Psalm 83, which describes the nations that have conspired against Israel, and how this prophecy is being realised in the present day. 🙏 The speaker emphasises that the solution to the conflict lies in God's intervention, as evidenced by past biblical events. 🌎 The ultimate goal is for people to recognise God's sovereignty over the Earth. # Keywords - Middle East conflict - Bible prophecy - God's intervention #Timestamps00:00 - Introduction to the presentation 01:30 - The recent missile attack on Israel and the world's reaction 03:30 - The inability of the United Nations, the United States, and Russia to provide a lasting solution 06:00 - The prophecy in Psalm 83 and its relevance to the current situation 10:00 - The solution to the conflict lies in God's intervention, as evidenced by past biblical events 14:00 - The purpose of these events is to convince people of God's sovereignty over the Earth 16:30 - The return of Jesus Christ and the promise of lasting peace 18:00 - Conclusion and the importance of being prepared for the Lord's return. ****************************************************************************** This video was produced by the ChristadelphianVideo.org project, arranged and supported by Christadelphians worldwide. Ultimately, the presentation aims to prepare the audience for the imminent return of Christ and the importance of being spiritually ready. # Highlights - ⏳ **The Timing of Christ’s Return**: The exact day or hour of Christ's return is unknown, but we are in a specific time period that is rapidly narrowing, suggesting His return is imminent. - 📜 **Historical Signs**: Significant events such as the Balfour Declaration in 1917, the establishment of Israel in 1948, and the recapture of Jerusalem in 1967 serve as prophetic milestones indicating the nearness of Christ's return. - 🌍 **Global Turmoil**: Increasing natural disasters, wars, and moral decay are signs of the times, aligning with biblical prophecies that foreshadow the return of Christ. - 🚪 **The Rapture Concept**: Various interpretations exist regarding how believers will be taken, with a focus on the idea of being caught up with the resurrected in the clouds, though the presentation critiques the traditional church view of the Rapture. - 🔍 **Living Proof of His Return**: The presentation suggests that upon Christ's return, there may be a visible sign, such as seeing resurrected loved ones, providing assurance of His presence. - 📅 **Preparation for Judgment**: The audience is encouraged to be spiritually prepared for the return of Christ, as the time of opportunity is diminishing. # Keywords #ChristReturn #Prophecy #SpiritualPreparation

Thought for November 11th. “For they sow the wind” Nov 11, 2024
    Show notes

Today is the 11th day of the 11th month and 105 years ago it was chosen as Armistice Day, now called Remembrance Day as a day of solemn memory of the millions, who had fallen in what was called the “Great War” of 1914-18. There was an ever greater war with many more millions dying in 1939-1945. The 11th of November has become a Remembrance Day for all wars and people with an urge to remember gather in solemn ceremonies at dawn.

There is value in looking back and taking stock. There is even greater value in looking forward! But to what today, can people look forward? The future we see has a great many things that cause concern: there are 5 main ones. 1. The weather around the world has become increasingly violent, potentially caused by massive industrial development. 2. The world financial system is in disarray, all kinds of stopgap policies being tried to prevent a total system failure, but a policy to make it sound and dependable seems impossible. 3. There is more and more violent behaviour, especially among and by the young. 4. Multiple war fronts erupting all over the world but particularly in the Middle East and the Ukraine. And lastly, the potential for world wide deadly diseases.

You may have heard the proverb about sowing to the wind and reaping the whirlwind. Do you know what it means? Did you know it comes from the Bible? The farmer in ancient times, sowed seed in his field by carrying a basket and scattering the seed around as he walked. He took care to scatter it as evenly as possible but still some fell in unproductive places as the parable of Jesus tells us; it would be very unwise to sow on a windy day [Eccles. 11 v.4]

Our reading in Hosea today [Ch.8] has, “For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind” [v7]. The spiritual application here is about how we use our life, our intellect, and our energies. You go to school; you are “sowing” for your future, we learn much more of the ways of living outside of school. What kind of “training” is that giving for the future. Those who sow so that the wind blows the seed all over the place are bringing a lot of useless stuff into their minds that will not only be of no benefit in the future, but has a large chance of being destructive.

The context in Hosea is that Israel, especially the northern ten tribes, had done just that! We read in the very next verse, “Israel is swallowed up; already they are among the nations as a useless people.” Their essential fault is [v.14] “Israel has forgotten his Maker” That is exactly the situation in the world today – they are sowing to the wind, believing there is no God, and now they are at their wits end with whirlwinds looming on the horizon.

“The eleventh hour” Do you remember how and why Jesus used that phrase? It’s in a parable that’s in Matthew Ch. 20 where a landowner went out “to hire labourers for his vineyard” God is the landowner, the world is his vineyard, who are ready to be labourers for him? Even “about the eleventh hour” [v.6] when the day was nearly over he went out and saw more “standing idle” and invited them to work in his vineyard.

This world is in its “eleventh hour” and so many are sowing to the win

Thought for November 10th. “It is hard for you” Nov 10, 2024
    Show notes

Paul is described as God’s “chosen vessel” [Acts 9 v.15] but that does not mean he was lavished with favours by God like a father does toward his favourite son, such as Jacob did with Joseph and his coat of many colours [Gen 37 v.3-4]. Paul recalls, as he is giving his account before King Agrippa, what Jesus said to him on the road to Damascus, “It is hard for you to kick against the goads” [Acts 26 v.14]

What does that mean? References to goads are common in Greek and Roman writings. If the oxen are going where the ploughman does not want them to go, there is a goad they kick against. Jesus knew Paul had a troubled conscience. He knew that a battle had been going on in his mind and he was kicking against an inner conscience every time he persecuted Christians, part of his mind knew he was doing wrong. Do you get that feeling sometimes? I am sure that all those who are striving to serve Jesus as their Lord experience this at times.

Some might see it as terrible that God should allow Paul to be arrested and stopped from further preaching and be on trial. [Acts Chs.22-26] But it gives him opportunity to challenge (or rather God through him) both the Jewish and Roman leaders. Notice how Paul made Felix uneasy when “he reasoned about righteousness and self control and the coming judgment” the text says Felix became “alarmed” [Acts 24:25]. Do we get alarmed at times?

In the OT we are reading Ezra: but this book is not written by Ezra, it is really a continuation of 2nd Chronicles. Ezra 1, should really be 2 Chron. 27. In tomorrow’s chapter, Chapter 7, Ezra, a scribe [v.6] first comes on the scene, he is just one of a number of those returning from exile, but he stands out! Why?

In v.10 we read, “For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the LORD and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.” Note the 3 things he had set his heart to do. He impressed the Persian King and the King gives a message to others about him. [v.21-26] Ezra’s reaction and appreciation is shown in v.27-28 “Blessed be the LORD, the God of our fathers, who put such a thing as this into the heart of the king …. I took courage, for the hand of the LORD my God was on me … “ Ezra too, was a chosen vessel.

Thought for November 9th. “BE IT KNOWN” Nov 09, 2024
    Show notes

    Today’s readings.. (Ezra 3,4), (Hosea 6), (Acts 23,24)

People promise to say the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth in a court of law! The fullness of that wording is interesting as it tries to counter the common human tendency to bend the truth, this is done sometimes to the extent that it really becomes an outright lie. It has been said that “half-truths” are more dangerous than lies. When a human being declares to others, “Be it known to you …” certain ‘facts’ – it is always as they want to see the facts.

We have examples of this in both our Old and New Testament readings today. In Ezra we are reading of the struggles of the first contingency of Jews who returned from captivity to Jerusalem with the purpose of rebuilding the temple. Nebuchadnezzar, in destroying it, was so thorough that even the foundations were wrecked. The non-Jews who, were transported to the area from Assyria, (Ezra 4 v.20) take offence when the Jews decline their offer of involvement in the work. The result is they try to stop the work.

When a new King comes on the Persian throne they write a letter to him saying, “Be it known to the king that the Jews … are rebuilding that rebellious and wicked city … if this city is rebuilt and the walls finished they will not pay tribute, custom or toll and the royal revenue will be impaired …” [v.12,13] This was a total distortion of the facts, really a lie. It is astonishing how often money is made an issue – it was a most important factor in human decision making then and now.

Now in the New Testament we read that after Paul’s arrest by the Romans in a riot that the Jews provoked, they allege before the Roman Governor that Paul is “one who stirs up riots among all the Jews throughout the world … he even tried to profane the Temple, but we seized him.” [Acts 24 v.5,6] Testimonies as to the true cause of a situation are so often distorted through prejudice.

Paul refuted these claims (v.12,13) and says, “I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man” [v.16]. Do we “always take pains” to have a clear conscience? God knows whether we bend the truth, even slightly! Do we have a clear conscience in the way we teach what God’s word says? Paul tells Timothy, in the last letter he wrote, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth” [2 Tim. 2 v15] The most dangerous thing of all for people to do is to bend God’s “word of truth.”

Thought for November 8th. “… THEY GLORIFIED GOD” Nov 08, 2024
    Show notes

    Today’s readings.. (Ezra 1,2), (Hosea 5), (Acts 21,22)

Today we read of how Paul returned to Jerusalem and it is obvious from the text that Luke, the author of Acts, is with him and this is a firsthand account from his personal experience of these events. He writes, “When we had come to Jerusalem, the brothers received us gladly. On the following day Paul went in with us to James, and all the elders were present. After greeting them, he related one by one the things that God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry.” [21 v.17-19]

Imagine the conversation – from what we have read in the last few days. How pleased they were to learn this news, for information travelled very slowly in those days and was largely by word of mouth. We read, “And when they heard it, they glorified God.” [v.20]

Let us imagine the reaction among these elders, the foundation members of the ecclesia in Jerusalem, among them would be those who remembered the final words of instruction of their Lord before he ascended to heaven to “be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.” [1 v.8] Did it inspire some of them to travel? It is possible Peter went to Babylon – 1 Pet. 5 v.13 and John ended up on “the isle of Patmos,” [Rev. 1 v.9]

How does our reaction compare to those in Jerusalem? To what extent can it be said we have “glorified God” with wonder and appreciation in knowing the way the original truth of the gospel has now spread into so much of the world since the end of the last world war? Look at the list of countries now shown in the CALS Diary! Do we read of events in those countries with wonder and appreciation realizing how the final ingathering is taking place before our Lord appears?

How eager we should be to be part of that wider ingathering if we can possibly make or take the opportunity. Have we genuinely “glorified God” in being able to know this work for the Lord in these final days?

Thought for November 7th. “I AM INNOCENT” Nov 07, 2024
    Show notes

    Today’s readings.. (2 Chronicles 36), (Hosea 4), (Acts 20)

We are now reading, in Acts 20, the climax to Paul’s travels. He is heading towards his destiny in Jerusalem. He arrives at Miletus and “sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church to come to him.” [v.17] Among the things he said to them was his declaration (v.25) that none of them would see his face again, adding the challenging comment, to them and to us, “Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all, for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God” [v.26,27]

This creates for us food for thought and meditation. How much have you and I “declared” at least a fundamental message to our neighbours, friends and work associates that there is a God who made everything and who will soon punish the world because it has become so totally godless. And then, to that message we can add that after this punishment, which is pictured in his word as being very severe, there will be a wonderful transformation far beyond our comprehension.

It will greatly exceed the transformation that took place in Judah and Jerusalem in the time of Ezra which we will start reading about tomorrow. Today, in the last chapter of 2nd Chronicles, we read of the utter desolation of God’s nation because “all the officers of the priests and the people likewise were exceedingly unfaithful” [v.14]. It is the same today compared to when the Bible was first available for all to read.

Most of us are familiar with Isaiah’s prophecy of what ‘shall come to pass in the latter days” . Wonderfully “many peoples shall come, and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house(Temple) of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths. For out of Zion shall go the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples” [ch. 2 v.2-4] And in Zion they will worship at the new glorious temple, which Jesus said would be “a house of prayer for all the nations” [Mark 11 v.17]

Let us witness to the wonder of our faith in this hope so that we can say, “I am innocent” of the fate of my workmates, neighbours and others of the world I have contact with because I have not failed to testify to what I believe. Remember the comment Paul made to the Corinthians, “I believed, and so I spoke” [2 Cor. 4 v.13] Let us do likewise.

A Bible Study about Head Coverings #2 Congregational Practice, Mutual Submission and Bible Answers Nov 05, 2024
    Show notes

A @Christadelphians Video: The second talk has a focus on answering some of the reasons that are used to undermine Paul’s clear teaching. # Summary This PRESENTATION discusses the Biblical perspective on headship and head coverings, focusing on congregational practices and mutual submission. It emphasises the importance of adhering to scriptural teachings rather than societal pressures, particularly in light of feminist movements that challenge traditional roles outlined by the Apostle Paul. The speaker argues that headship principles are consistent throughout the Bible and should be respected in contemporary worship settings. # Highlights - 📖 **Scriptural Authority**: The presentation stresses that beliefs must be based on scripture, not emotions or societal trends. The speaker highlights that God's commands, as conveyed through the Apostle Paul, should not be disregarded due to modern cultural changes. - ⛪ **Congregational Practice**: It is explained that head coverings for women and uncovered heads for men during worship are not merely cultural practices but are rooted in Biblical principles established from creation, as outlined in Genesis and reiterated in the New Testament. - 👩‍⚖️ **Roles and Responsibilities**: The speaker discusses the roles of men and women in ecclesial life, emphasising that men are to lead in prayer and teaching while women are to learn in silence and not usurp authority. This is presented as a divine order rather than a matter of equality or ability. - 💬 **Mutual Submission**: The importance of mutual submission within congregations is highlighted, asserting that decisions on non-essential matters should be made collectively and with humility, prioritising the peace and unity of the church over individual rights. - ⚖️ **Caution Against Modern Interpretations**: The speaker warns against contemporary interpretations of scripture that align with feminist ideologies, stressing that the teachings of Paul are timeless and should not be altered to fit modern sensibilities. # Keywords #HeadCoverings #BiblicalAuthority #CongregationalPractice # Timestamps 00:00 - Intro 01:15 - Overview of previous talk on Timothy and Corinthians 03:45 - Importance of scriptural authority over societal pressures 07:00 - Headship principles from creation to ecclesial life 10:30 - The impact of the feminist movement on church practices 14:00 - Contrast of head coverings in the law of Moses vs. New Testament 18:15 - God's specific instructions for worship practices 22:00 - Headship roles of men and women in the Bible 26:30 - The significance of mutual submission in congregational life 30:00 - Addressing objections to headship and covering practices 34:15 - The role of women in ecclesial settings and their contributions 38:00 - The necessity of obedience to God's commands 42:30 - Summary of head coverings and worship principles 46:00 - Concluding remarks and invitation for questions The final appeal is for all of us behave in a unified way, seeking peace and applying the principle of mutual submission . ****************************************************************************** This video was produced by the ChristadelphianVideo.org project, arranged and supported by Christadelphians worldwide.
