The Bible Prophecy Seminar: The Wonder of Bible Prophecy: Seminar Series - Introduction Nov 19, 2024
    Show notes

A @Christadelphians Video: # Summary This PRESENTATION introduces the concept of Bible prophecy, outlining its significance and relevance in contemporary discussions. The speaker discusses the definition of prophecy, the role of biblical prophets, and the importance of distinguishing between true and false prophets. The presentation also highlights the interest in Bible prophecy as reflected in media headlines, emphasising its potential to illuminate the future and offer hope amidst uncertainty. Highlights

    • 📖 **Definition of Prophecy**: Prophecy is defined as God's revelation to His prophets about future events, as indicated in Amos 3:7 and Hosea 12:10. This highlights the importance of prophets as intermediaries conveying divine messages.
    • 🔍 **Interest in Bible Prophecy**: There is a growing public interest in Bible prophecy, evidenced by its frequent mention in news headlines related to global events, suggesting that many seek understanding of the future through biblical texts.
    • 🌍 **Hope in the Future**: Bible prophecy is portrayed as a source of hope, illuminating paths for individuals in a troubled world. The speaker argues that it provides insights into God’s purpose for humanity rather than merely predicting doom.
    • 🕵️‍♂️ **Distinguishing True from False Prophets**: The presentation stresses the need to identify true prophets, as the Bible warns of false prophets, underscoring the importance of discernment in understanding prophetic messages.
    • 💡 **Intellectual Appeal**: The speaker presents a logical argument that if the Bible can accurately predict the future, it must be the word of God, challenging the audience to consider the implications of biblical predictions versus human attempts at foresight.

Thought for November 19th. “THOSE WHO ARE PERISHING BECAUSE …” Nov 19, 2024
    Show notes

We are challenged by the way Paul uses the word “truth” 3 times in Chapter 2 of his 2nd letter to the Thessalonians. He also uses it 11 times in his letters to Timothy, which we are just about to read. There is not much “truth” spoken today. No one admits anything they say is a lie, but it is a challenging question to ask ourselves ‘Can we really make a positive statement about something which is neither a “lie” nor “the truth”?

The tactic of deliberately giving a misleading impression is all too common; some refer to such as ‘half-truths’ ! Let’s consider some of the points Paul makes. He writes of “those who are perishing because they refused to love the truth and so be saved” [v.10] So ‘truth’ is not just something to be spoken – there is a certain “truth” which is something to be loved – and those who do not do this – perish!

What is the specific “sense” of the “truth” Paul is referring to here? It is the truth about God and the truth about his ways and the beliefs he is looking for humans to accept and – as a result – then to live their lives in a way that shows they willingly – indeed joyfully – accept this truth as the only meaningful way to live their lives.

We are then challenged to understand the character of God when the next 2 verses tell us “therefore God shall send them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness” [v.11,12]

Some pull a curtain across their minds as to the character of God; to simply say ‘God is love’ is an oversimplification. Those who have pleasure in unrighteousness cannot serve God acceptably. God knows our hearts; we can intellectually know – and say we understand what is true – but do we love that which is true? We may believe God is soon going to make his power known in a very dramatic way! Do we “see” in our hearts that God is being “righteous” in doing this – that God is doing the right thing – because the world deserves this!

Verse 13 says we are chosen by God “to be saved through sanctification (holiness) by the Spirit and belief in the truth”. In contrast, when Jesus returns he will “inflict vengeance on all those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel …” [1 v.8] But, oh the wonder and joy for those who do! [1 v9-12] And you?

Thought for November 18th. “CHILDREN OF THE DAY” Nov 18, 2024
    Show notes

In the sight of God we all have the opportunity to be his children. Paul, in completing his first letter to the Thessalonians makes the point, “you are not in darkness brothers … for you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night …” “ [ch. 5 v.4,5] There is a simple but profound lesson here. It is essential for our spiritual eyes to be wide open (recall Ephesians 1 v.18) – day after day – week after week – month after month – year after year!

Paul presses the point, “We are not of the night, nor of the darkness.” There can be no spiritual night-time for genuine committed believers. He continues, “So then let us not sleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night ,,,,, we belong to the day, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation” [v.6-8]”

We shudder at Paul’s words in the next verse, “For God has not destined us to wrath but to obtain salvation …” But let us not spend any time thinking of the destiny of those who are not of the day. There is no middle path, only broad and narrow ones! In a way the seemingly never ending turmoil of the nations around Israel at the moment can be seen as a foretaste of the wrath for those who have no knowledge at all of the one true God..

As those who have on – or should have on – “the breastplate of faith” we have a tremendous example to follow as we read more of the dedication of Nehemiah (ch. 5 & 6) as he pushed to one side all those who tried to hinder and stop the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. Let us all work at building up the walls of our faith – and create secure “gates” that only allow in that which is good and profitable.

Thought for November 17th. “ESTABLISH YOUR HEARTS BLAMELESS” Nov 17, 2024
    Show notes

everal verses in the 2 chapters (3 & 4) of our 1 Thessalonians reading today are very meaningful for us as we struggle with influences that can undermine our faith. In many ways it was a better atmosphere a few generations ago (in the western world), not only because moral standards were higher, but because the churches generally, although misunderstanding some of the foundation teaching of Jesus and the Apostles, nevertheless had a measure of influence for good and right living in the world.

It is not so today, therefore even greater effort is needed by us individually – it is even more vital to read and meditate on God’s word – at some point each day. We read how Paul was anxious about the state of the faith in the hearts of the believers in Thessalonica and is comforted “now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of your faith and love …[3 v.6] adding “in all our distress and affliction we have been comforted about you through your faith. For now we live if you are standing fast in the Lord/” [v.7,8].

Committed believers survived then by helping each other, Paul told the Galatians, “Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ” [6 v.2] Back in Thessalonians we read, “may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another … that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.” [[v.12,13]. The end of ch. 4 gives us more details of his dramatic return.

As the troubles being experienced in our world grow greater we will need to “establish” this attitude more and more. Notice, Paul does not say “establish” your minds in the sense of intellectual understanding, although that is important, but “establish your hearts.” In Ch. 4 he emphasizes this this, saying “you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another … we urge you brothers, to do this more and more …” [v.9,10] Our chapters in Nehemiah show the tremendous teamwork he inspired among those rebuilding the gates and walls of Jerusalem. Ch. 3 lists 33 individuals and groups each working on the part of the wall nearest them. There are enemies trying to stop them, but Nehemiah says, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord who is great and awesome …” [4 v.14]

There is a comparison here with what Paul wrote in 2nd Cor, “…we are not waging war according to the flesh. … the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We … take every thought captive to obey Christ” [10 v.3-5] – by that means we will “establish (our) hearts blameless.”

Thought for November 16th. “TO PLEASE GOD WHO TESTS OUR HEARTS” Nov 16, 2024
    Show notes

As Paul and his companions travelled to bring the message of Christ their reception was different in each place. We have had the same experience ourselves. What is very pleasing is that in countries in which we did not expect to have much if any success in teaching the truth about the Bible, some progress has, most remarkably been made. We think of Nepal, then of Bangladesh, then Cambodia and now there is some response to our efforts to spread the truth of God’s word in Burma, time will tell, how much.

Today we are reading Paul’s letters to the believers in Thessalonica and noted his comments in the first chapter that “they received the word in much affliction” [v.6], also how they “became an example … for not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere” [v.7,8] No wonder Paul is so enthusiastic in what he writes!

In the 2nd chapter he recalls; “we had boldness in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the midst of much conflict … we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts. For we never came with words of flattery … nor with a pretext for greed …” [v.2,4,5]. It is tragic that so often the motive in preaching has been wrong and those with the wrong motive God will judge. Those with the right motive accept Paul’s call to “walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.” [v.12]

Finally, we noted the point he made at the end of the 1st chapter – that we “wait for his son from heaven … Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.” This reminded us of what we read in Hosea today, the fate of those who have no time for God, ”they shall be like the morning mist or like the dew that goes early away… or like smoke from a window” [13 v.3] to become no more, not even to know they ever existed.

We must each ask ourselves, ‘What does God find when he tests my heart?’

Prophecies of Ezekiel: Israel’s Destiny! Nov 15, 2024
    Show notes

A @Christadelphians Video: Description: At the time of the Babylonian captivity of Israel (Judah) in approximately 600BC, the Hebrew prophet Ezekiel said God would re-gather His people Israel. Ezekiel’s graphic vision of a valley of dry human bones coming to life depicts the rejuvenation of Israel in its own land today. Ezekiel also forecast the invasion of the land of Israel by a great northern confederacy AFTER the return of the scattered Jews. Ezekiel describes a great battle in Israel in which the LORD defeats the invader and saves Israel to rule the world from Jerusalem.
