Responding to the Word – Part One. (Matthew 13: 18-21)

    Introduction.

    I. Hard Ground – Hard Heart

“Therefore, hear the parable of the Sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside. (Matthew 13: 18-19)

II. Stony Ground – Shallow Heart.

But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no root in himself but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. (Matthew 13: 20-21)

The Surprising Truth About Parables ( Matthew 13:10-17)

    The Purpose of Parables

10 And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” 11 He answered and said to them, “Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says:

‘Hearing you will hear and shall not understand,
    And seeing you will see and not perceive;
15 For the hearts of this people have grown dull.
Their ears are hard of hearing,
And their eyes they have closed,
Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears,
Lest they should understand with their hearts
    and turn,
    So that I]should heal them.’

16 But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear; 17 for assuredly, I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

The Truth About Parables. (Matthew 13: 1-9)

Introduction - Jesus’ Use of Parables.

    I. The Parable of the Sower

1That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them about many things in parables, saying: “The sower went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear. “

The Ultimate Proof. ( Matthew 12:42-45).

    I. The Pharisee’s Ask for Another Sign

The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here. (Matthew 12: 42)

    II. The Impure Spirit.

43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.” (Matthew 12: 43-45)

III. The Sign of the Resurrection.

IV. An Illustration from the 1st Century and an Example from the 20th Century.

19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ 25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’ 27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ 30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’” (Luke 16: 19-31)

The Sign of Jonah, Further Proof. ( Matthew 12:38-45)

    Introduction.

Over the years as I have talked to people about the Lord, I have people say to me on occasion, I want proof. When I hear that my usual response is to talk to about prophecy, about how the OT made lots of prediction about the Messiah and how Jesus Christ fulfilled those prophecies. That had a reasonable amount of success probably about up to around 20 years ago when most people had some degree of biblical literacy, but now days a great many people know nothing about the Bible and so they often now say, I want more proof than that. So what should we do when that happens? Do you think there is a right answer that will persuade most of the people most of the times, or maybe just some of the people some of the time. Well, that very thing happened to Jesus himself and let me show you what Jesus said.

38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here

The Unpardonable Sin (Matthew 12: 31-37)

    I. Introduction.

After all Jesus has said so far about inner righteousness and unconditional salvation it is surprising to find him talk about an unforgivable spoken by Jesus the Saviour of all people.

31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. 33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.

    (Matthew 12: 31-33)

II. The Old Testament View of the Holy Spirit.

    III Hearts And Words.

34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Satan's Defences Are Breached (Matthew 12:22-30)

It is important to understand that in the 1st century eastern world it was not only mental and psychological illness which was ascribed to the influence of demons and devils; all illness was attributed to these malignant powers. Exorcism was very commonly practised; and was in many cases records show was seen to be effective.

There is nothing in that to be surprised at. I personally believe, even today, that sometimes physical illness can issue can still be entirely spiritual in nature, even amongst ourselves today anyone can stress themselves into having a headache, or can convince themselves that they have symptoms of an illness which then can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. When a person under such a belief is confronted with an exorcist in whom they had confidence, often the sickness can be dispelled, and a cure is the result. In such cases if a person who is convinced they was cured, they are cured in deed.

But what about Jesus, what did he do when there were demonic forces at play, how did Jesus deal with them, and was it any different that the practice of the Jewish exorcist his day. Let’s pick up the text in verse 22.

22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. 23 All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?” 24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.” 25 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house. (Matthew 12: 22-29)

In this instance Jesus is seen to cure a man who was blind, deaf and dumb and whose infirmity was attributed to demon-possession, and he heals him. The people were amazed. They began to wonder if this Jesus could be the Son of David, the long promised and long expected great Saviour and liberator. Any doubt or questions they had was due to the fact that Jesus was so unlike the picture of the Son of David in which they had been brought up to believe. /Here was no glorious prince with pomp and circumstance; there was no great warrior here rattling his swords and he had no conquering army with him. He did not call upon them to rise up against their Roman oppressors. Here was a simple carpenter from Galilee, who spoke words of gentle wisdom who say things with a compassionate eye, and in hands ministers a gentle healing power. All the time the Scribes and Pharisees were looking critically on. They had already arrived at their own solution to the dilemma Jesus had presented them with.

We heard in yesterday’s episode who they had concluded that Jesus must be destroyed because he was in league with the prince of devils himself. Jesus refutes their allegations again, and in doing so presents three further unanswerable replies to that charge.

    (i) If he was casting out devils by the help of the prince of devils, it could only mean that in the demonic kingdom there was at war with itsel

Jesus Handles Further Opposition (Matthew 12: 9-21)

    Introduction – Jesus Moves on.

We continue where we left off last time by looking at how Jesus deals with the rising opposition against him by looking at how he compares, and contrasts Love and the Law.

9 He left there and went into their synagogue. And look you, there was a man there with a withered hand. So, they asked him, "Is it permitted to heal on the Sabbath?" They asked this question in order that they might find an accusation against him. "What man will there be of you," he said, "who will have a sheep, and, if the sheep falls into a pit on the Sabbath day, will not take a grip of it, and lift it out? How much more valuable is a man than a sheep? So, then, it is permitted to do a good thing on the Sabbath day." Then he said to the man, "Stretch forth your hand!" He stretched it out, and it was restored, sound as the other. So, the Pharisees went away and conferred against him, to find a way to destroy him. (Matthew 12: 9-14)

    The Challenge Accepted.

The Characteristics of The Servant Of The Lord.

15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill. 16 He warned them not to tell others about him. 17 This was to fulfil what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. 19 He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he has brought justice through to victory. 2In his name the nations will put their hope.” (Matthew 12: 18-21)
