    Episode Notes:

Most people assume pride and spirituality cannot coexist. Surely, if someone is truly spiritual, they wouldn’t be proud… would they?

Yet the Old Testament records the story of a deeply spiritual man who also struggled with pride. His experience warns all of us who genuinely desire to walk with the Lord.

So, what lessons can we learn from his example?....

When a church building falls into disrepair, the first step is always the same: clean out the rubbish.

But when a church falls into spiritual disrepair, then sometimes ministries need to be removed or restored. Sometimes the whole spiritual structure needs to be rebuilt.

A very similar thing happened in the Old Testament when Hezekiah became king; he discovered that the temple, because of years of neglect and idolatry, was filled with debris, defilement, and disorder. It needed to be cleansed. It needed to be reopened. It needed to be restored.

And what Hezekiah did, and what happened as a result, provides a powerful example for us today.

How To Know the Correct Response. (2 Chronicles 29: 1-36) Sep 23, 2026

To continue receiving this podcast, please subscribe to: https://thebiblejourneydailypodcast.buzzsprout.com

This Podcast is part of season 23 of a project to complete an in-depth study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse.

    Episode Notes:

Today we’re looking at 2 Chronicles chapter 29, a passage that marks a dramatic turning point in the spiritual life of Judah.

After a long season of decline under King Ahaz, the nation had drifted far from God. Worship had been neglected, the temple doors had been shut, and the people had grown accustomed to a life without the presence of the Lord at the centre.

But then comes Hezekiah, a young king with a heart set on restoring what had been lost. His first acts as king weren’t political or military; they were spiritual. He reopened the temple, called the priests and Levites together, and began the work of cleansing, restoring, and renewing the worship of God.

This chapter offers a clear picture of what genuine response to God looks like. It shows us that when God calls His people back to Himself, the right response is not vague spirituality or half‑hearted gestures. It is decisive, practical, and wholehearted. Hezekiah’s actions reveal a pattern for us today. A pattern of returning, cleansing, recommitting, and rejoicing in the presence of God.

So, in this episode, titled “How Should We Respond to God?”, we’re going to walk through this chapter and draw out the helpful principles it offers. What does it look like to respond to God when He prompts our hearts? How do we rebuild what has been neglected? And how can we cultivate a life where worship is restored to its rightful place? So, let's step into the story of Hezekiah, a story that invites us to consider our own response to the God who calls us back to Himself….

    Episode Notes:

Today’s episode begins with a question many of us have wrestled with:

How can someone hold a wrong theological position, and yet make it sound logical?

Have you ever spoken with someone from a cult, or a group with deeply flawed doctrine, and found yourself thinking: "What they’re saying sounds logical… but I know it’s wrong.”

So how can right logic support wrong theology?

The answer is simple: Logic built on a false foundation will always lead to a false conclusion. And in the Old Testament, we find a king who made that tragic mistake. Here is a man whose thinking was logical, but whose theology was catastrophically wrong…His name is Ahaz….

    Episode Notes:

Ideally, parents should model what their children ought to be, and children should follow in their footsteps. When father and mother provide a good example, that’s a blessing. When they provide a bad example, the path forward is still clear, and the child must choose differently.

But what happens when a parent provides a mixed example? Not entirely good, not entirely bad. A confusing blend of obedience and disobedience, devotion and compromise, strength and weakness. That can be very difficult for a child to navigate.

Well, in the Old Testament, we find a story of a king who faced exactly that situation. His father’s life was a mixture of moments of obedience, moments of rebellion, but also moments of strength and moments of failure.

The question is: What can we learn from his choice?

That story is recorded in 2 Chronicles 2, a short chapter, but a deeply instructive one. So, join me in this brief but powerful passage as we explore how Jotham handled the confusing legacy left to him, and what his example can teach us today….

    Episode Notes:

Whenever we hear of spiritual failure, whether in a leader, a friend, a family member, or even in our own lives, we instinctively ask the same questions:

    What happened?

    What caused the failure?

We often point to surface‑level issues like the love of money or moral compromise—the pressures of leadership, the temptations of success. And no doubt, those are real factors. But behind all those symptoms lies a deeper, more fundamental problem. The root cause that only the Bible exposes, and it does so repeatedly.

In the Old Testament, there is a story that illustrates this with remarkable clarity. It is the story of a king who began brilliantly, prospered greatly, and then collapsed spiritually. His downfall was neither mysterious nor complicated. It was rooted in one single cause, the same cause behind every spiritual failure in every generation.

That cause is revealed in 2 Chronicles 26. In this episode, we’re not just looking at Uzziah’s failure. We’re not just examining the symptoms, and we’re not just tracing the secondary effects; we are looking at the core reason. We are going after the root cause. The underlying spiritual condition that leads to collapse, no matter how strong the beginning may be.

    Episode Notes:

Today’s episode is titled “The Reality of Idolatry.”

Idolatry is not only sinful, but it is also stupid. When we hear the word idolatry, we tend to picture an uncivilized person bowing down before a carved image. And yes, that is one form of idolatry. But it is definitely not the only form.

According to the New Testament, believers can be guilty of idolatry. Paul says in Colossians 3:5 that greed is a form of idolatry. John warns believers in 1 John 5:21, “Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.” And Paul tells the Corinthians to flee from idolatry — and remember, he is not writing to unbelievers or pagans, but to a Christian church. So, he obviously believed that Christians are always at risk of falling into idolatry.

Idolatry is not just something that happens in primitive cultures. It is something that happens in the human heart. The message- that idolatry is foolish, irrational, and destructive comes from the Lord Himself. And He delivered that message to a king in ancient Judah.

    Episode Notes:

Today’s episode is titled “Taking Good Advice.”

Is it wise to listen to advisors?

Well, yes, but only if they are giving the right advice.

The issue is not simply being willing to take advice. The issue is discerning which voices should shape your decisions, direction, and spiritual life.

There is a story in the Old Testament that illustrates this point with striking clarity. It is the story of Joash, our new young king, who listened to two very different sets of advisors and whose life took two very different paths depending on which voices he followed at particular points in time.

His story teaches us a valuable lesson about the advice we receive and the influences we allow in our lives, as well as the importance of surrounding ourselves with people who point us toward the Lord.

    Episode Notes:

When we left chapter 22 yesterday, a murderous woman now sat on the throne as queen. The only surviving Davidic heir was a seven‑year‑old boy, hidden away, unrecognised and unknown, and unable to rule.

The nation was also steeped in Baal worship. So, the spiritual condition of Judah was at its lowest point. And the promise of God, that a male descendant of David would sit on the throne, seemed on the brink of collapse.

There was not much hope for a spiritual revival, and there seemed no hope either of any national restoration. In fact, there was not much hope for anything at all.

So, what happened? What changed the situation? How did God intervene when there seemed no hope of a solution? The answer is found in the next chapter we are studying today, chapter 23.

So welcome to today’s episode, and together let’s explore a situation when there seemed no hope of a solution….

As a rule, parents are meant to be magnificent role models for their children. They nurture, they guide, they protect, they shape the next generation with quiet strength and sacrificial love.

But we’ve all heard of parents who do damage to their children, parents whose influence was destructive rather than life‑giving. And the Bible contains a story of such a parent: on this occasion, a mother, a woman whose choices harmed her son and destroyed her grandchildren.

It is a tragic and sobering story. But it is also a story filled with lessons we desperately need in our own time.
