BHP 017: Ex-Special Forces George Briones on Resilience, Purpose and Polyphasic Sleep Apr 17, 2018
Show notes George Briones is a former Marine Special Forces operator who now provides elite-level training for endurance athletes, weightlifters, and adrenaline junkies all over the world. If you’re an entrepreneur, athlete, hard-charger, or anywhere close to a Type A personality, this conversation about the struggle to find balance with our purpose, drive, and chasing dreams, while paying attention to recovery and relationships is for you. George candidly talks about his struggles transitioning out of the military, the lessons he learned and how those experiences have made him a better coach for his athletes – and a better human. We also talk about his experiment with polyphasic sleep, ditching the traditional 7-9 hour sleep period in favor of multiple shorter sleep phases throughout the day – a method used by geniuses like Tesla, Da Vinci, Churchill, Napoleon, and Edison to increase productivity.

What You’ll Hear From George Briones on the Better Human Project:

    • The tough transitions in life, finding balance with purpose, relationships, and career.
    • George talks about the critical moments that snapped him out of his funk and unhealthy lifestyle.
    • Why we should wake up every morning like we’re trying to work our way up to the top.
    • “Human beings are put on this earth to help push each other to become better.”
    • Why George says we should get comfortable being uncomfortable and work to put yourself out of a job.
    • Sleeping like Einstein: George’s polyphasic sleeping experiment, his pre/post bed routine and how he uses
    • The 3 H’s to measure and monitor progress.
    • George’s tips to #BeBetter and #DoBetter:
      • Be kind, smile at everyone you see and ask someone if they need help.

BHP 015: Big Wave Surfer Cheyne Magnusson Apr 03, 2018
    Show notes

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to ride a fiberglass board on a 50 foot wall of water that travels faster than a motorcycle and breaks over coral reef in 6 feet of shark-infested water?

The barrel is so wide you can drive an RV through it and not touch the walls of the wave. It’s the best feeling!

From 7-mile long waves in China to tow-in sessions at Tahiti’s famed Teahupoo (pronounced “Cho-poo”), Cheyne Magnusson is no stranger to big waves. In this week’s episode of the Better Human Project we unpack what it takes to succeed at the highest level and how to balance the fearlessness and humility required to ride – and survive – some of natures most awe-inspiring waves.

Cheyne also shares the wisdom from his mentors that has enabled him to avoid the pitfalls of stardom, to enjoy a long career, and how the next chapter of his life is focused on helping the future generation of surfers – including mentorship, wave parks and his special mission with Surfing For Autism.

To hear Mark tell it, all of his success can be attributed to that mantra: shut our mouth, listen to what people are saying, and then serving their needs to the best of our ability.

BHP 012: Tarzan and Sprout | Acro Yoga, Play, Connection and Communication Mar 13, 2018
    Show notes

Santa Monica, California – 5 minutes after I met Nicolas Coolridge I was suspended in midair, hanging from his body with no safety net.

I didn’t even know his name was Nicolas until we grabbed food after our Acro Yoga session on Muscle Beach.

An American Ninja Warrior mainstay, Tarzan, as Nicolas is known (and how he introduces himself), is perhaps the most famous Acro Yoga enthusiast in a rapidly growing community of movement fanatics.

Within 5 minutes of meeting each other, we were supporting each other in gravity-defying Acro Yoga poses that had us communicating, working together, laughing, and… touching. My experience in meeting Tarzan is not unique, and it highlights his passion for Acro and his ability to make instant connections while sharing and spreading the sport of Acro Yoga. We caught up with Tarzan and his acro partner, Dana – aka AcroSprout to talk about the sport of Acro Yoga, the power of human connection, play, communication, teamwork, and much more.

BHP 011: Darlington Martor | Anything Is Everything Mar 06, 2018
    Show notes

Born into the chaos of civil war and genocide in Liberia, Darlington Martor’s childhood gave him a unique perspective on life, gratitude, and being a better human.

While his experience may seem extraordinary to us, it’s an all-too-common story for many families around the world. And Darlington is one of the lucky ones – he survived, came to the US, played college soccer, received an education and now has dedicated his life to helping others.

His day job with The James Irvine Foundation allows him to write and distribute grants to California-area families and businesses that need help while his side hustle, Anything Is Everything is a charity that gives back to his home nation of Liberia.

Through AIE, Darlington has already shipped multiple 20 foot cargo containers full of goods and supplies to Liberia where he hand delivers the items, organizes youth soccer teams, and is working to build an Academy that will empower the Liberian youth and forever change his home nation.

On this powerful episode of the Better Human Project, Darlington talks about escaping ethnic cleansing and starvation, life in Refugee Camps, the problems with and corruption in many charitable organization, and how his own charity, Anything Is Everything is taking on these challenges to ensure he makes the impact he (and all donors) want to make.

** Anything Is Everything is our March partner for the BHP and our donations this month will help D make a massive impact in people’s lives. You can help make an impact here. **
