If finding common ground sounds like an ambitious prospect in these profoundly polarized times, that’s because, quite frankly, it is. But with his extraordinary new album, The United State, Wells has managed to transcend politics and race and religion and tap into something far deeper, something infinitely more primal and timeless. Recorded with acclaimed producer Duane Lundy (Ringo Starr, Sturgill Simpson’s Sunday Valley, Joe Pug), the collection explores our innate humanity and everything that comes with it: the joy, the sorrow, the ecstasy, the pain, the hope, the fear. Wells’ songs speak to the universal truths that bind us, empathetically leaping between perspectives as they reckon with personal growth and existential quandaries. The arrangements here are rich and ethereal to match, balancing lush sonic landscapes with stark acoustic meditations. The result is a subtly revelatory record, a gripping, cinematic album full of small moments and sharp insights that add up to nothing short of life itself. “Ultimately, this album’s about unity,” says Wells. “It’s about the common thread that connects us all.” After spending his childhood in Blanchard, LA, Wells moved with his family to Cynthiana, Kentucky as a youngster. Growing up in the rural South, he rebelled against the commercial country music that surrounded him, instead preferring the trippy psychedelia of Pink Floyd and the brash energy of Guns N’ Roses. After an aimless couple of years trying to put a band together in rural Kentucky, he moved to Lexington, and immediately launched the cult favorite Southern rock band Fifth on the Floor. The group released a couple of well-received independent records before teaming up with Shooter Jennings on their breakout third album, 2013’s Ashes & Angels, which debuted on the Billboard Country charts. While the record earned raves and helped land the band dates with the likes of Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, and Blackberry Smoke, it would prove to be the group’s last, and following a pair of hometown farewell shows, the four-piece split for good. “When that band broke up, it kicked me in the teeth. We’d spent years clawing upward, and suddenly there was no wind, no sails,” says Wells. “That had been my dream since I was a teenager, and all of my eggs were in that basket. There was no backup plan.”

With the rug suddenly pulled out from under him, Wells found himself in freefall. Rather than succumb to the disappointment, though, he decided to write his way through the heartache, emerging stronger and more creatively invigorated on the other side with his solo debut, Dawn in the Distance. The record (and its subsequent touring) prompted the best reviews of Wells’ career, with Rolling Stone hailing his “gift for melody” and Saving Country Music praising his “stunning insight and honesty.” The album reached #3 on Amazon’s Alt-Country/Americana chart, and songs from the collection racked up more than a million streams on Spotify alone.

When it came time to work on a follow-up, Wells decided to flip his entire writing process on its head. Instead of penning whatever music just happened to come to mind, he crafted an entire architecture and sequence for the record in advance, following it like a road map as he wrote about what it meant to be human, to be caring, to love yourself and your fellow man, flaws and all. “Tribalism is the name of the game at this point,” says Wells. “‘Divided’ is a cliche. But if you zoom out, we all bleed the same, we all laugh the same, we all cry the same. There’s this common path that all of our lives follow: birth, being a dumbass kid, thinking you’re falling in love, actually falling in love, starting a family. Worrying about paying the bills, death, whatever comes next.” Writing the album was a slower and more deliberate process than Wells had ever experienced, and the recording sessions unfolded in a similarl

Sammy Kershaw - Country Chord Podcast live from The Barn Mar 09, 2023
    Show notes

Ask one of his countless fans – or even one of his peers, and they will tell you that Sammy Kershaw definitely qualifies as a Country Music original. In a day and age where individuality isn’t something that is sought out as much as before, when you hear a Sammy Kershaw song about heartbreak, love, or good times – you know who it is. You don’t have to be told. And, in a career that has seen some amazing highs over the past thirty-five years, the best – as they say – is yet to come.

Growing up in Kaplan, Louisiana, Kershaw was enthralled with the masters at an early age – names like Conway Twitty, Mel Street, and George Jones. In fact, as a teenager, Kershaw had developed such a reputation for his vocals – even then – that he was often called upon to open for those acts, and others like them. Jones was so impressed with Sammy that he frequently used him on his shows whenever he was playing in the region.

Of all the artists that Kershaw has worked with over the years, it very well might be Jones that left the most impact. From the moment that he released his debut single for Mercury Records, “Cadillac Style,” critics and fans all made the comparison. Rather than run from them, Kershaw embraced them. After all, that stone Country sound was what Sammy Kershaw was all about – and that’s what he was going to give his fans! “Cadillac Style” made it all the way to No. 3 on the Billboard charts, and from there (to quote Jones), the race was on! Follow-ups such as “Don’t Go Near The Water” and “I Can’t Reach Her Anymore” established him as one of the finest traditional artists of his time, while records like “Yard Sale” showed that haunting Jones influence was very much a part of everything he is about.

In 1993, Sammy Kershaw topped the singles chart for the first time with “She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful,” which has become one of the most-played records at Country Radio over the past two decades. Albums such as Don’t Go Near The Water and Haunted Heart were both certified as million-sellers by the RIAA, and only continued to add to his stature. The hits kept coming on the airwaves, as well. He added to his resume such classics as “I Can’t Reach Her Anymore,” “Meant To Be,” his cover of The Amazing Rhythm Aces’ “Third Rate Romance,” and 1998’s “Love Of My Life,” which cemented his reputation as a balladeer.

Kershaw can be found out on the road – both on his own as well as part of the successful Roots & Boots tour with Collin Raye and Aaron Tippin. The three continue to bring their signature sounds to the fans year-after-year all over North America. But, Sammy Kershaw is not resting on his laurels – though he very well could. His 2014 George Jones tribute disc Do You Know Me was his highest-charting project in fifteen years, and has only whetted the appetites of his fans for more recordings. Afterwards, he completed a brand new album for Cleopatra Records that industry insiders are saying is one of the best releases he has ever done. He has also developed quite a strong social fan base via Facebook and Twitter, having done so in an organic fashion – very much one on one, the way he’s always preferred to do it! And, if that’s not enough, Kershaw is putting the finishing touches on his long-awaited autobiography – which promises to be as juicy as a bowl of the gumbo he loves to prepare in his Louisiana home!

So, make no mistake about it. The past has been a great, long-winding road of highs and lows for Sammy Kershaw, but to quote one of his past singles, the goal isn’t to rest on those accomplishments, but to be “Better Than I Used To Be.”

Downfall of Gaia - Vulgar Display of Podcast Mar 07, 2023
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Germany’s DOWNFALL OF GAIA will release their sixth studio album, Silhouettes Of Disgust, March 17th via Metal Blade Records, today unveiling the record’s cover art, track listing, and stunning first single.

Over the course of fifteen years, DOWNFALL OF GAIA has carved a unique space for themselves within the metal scene, evolving naturally and unafraid to take risks. With Silhouettes Of Disgust they progress in part by looking backwards and returning to familiar territory. The result is best described as a textured, dynamic blend of crust punk and post-black metal with a lot of atmospheric elements, taking everything that ever made the band compelling and pushing it in new and gripping directions. With the return of guitarist Peter Wolff, who left the band in 2015 to focus on family and other pursuits, the writing process was much more streamlined than the sixteen months spent penning 2019’s Ethic Of Radical Finitude. “We started in October of 2021 and went into the studio in April of 2022,” notes vocalist/guitarist Dominik Goncalves dos Reis. “Having Peter back — who founded DOWNFALL OF GAIA together with bassist/vocalist Anton [Lisovoj] and I in 2008 — was the big difference this time. For Ethic Of Radical Finitude And Atrophy (2016), I prepared all the guitars by myself before the four of us started working on all the details, which is a much longer way of working than doing everything as a couple.”

Wanting to keep things short and simple but straight in the listener’s face, the record does not feature the eight- to ten-minute epics of their more recent releases and is indeed punchier, with a lot of classic d-beat drumming driving the action, as on opener “Existence Of Awe” and the surging “Unredeemable.” They have also expanded their sonic palette with the inclusion of synths for the first time, and female vocals courtesy of Lulu Black, who collaborates with drummer Michael Kadnar in industrial/gothic project This Is Oblivion, making her voice familiar to the band members.

The album title, Silhouettes Of Disgust, is derived from the narratives driving the songs, focusing on the stories of eight different people, as residents of a fictional metropolis, each with their own worries and struggles. “Loneliness, addiction, the fear of tomorrow, pressure from society/work and others, things that many of us probably know all too well,” explains Goncalves dos Reis. “You have to play along somehow, or you fall through the cracks, and once you’re down, it’s hard to get back up. It looks at selfishness and ignorance, the general way of dealing with each other – you’re one, surrounded by millions, surrounded by all these silhouettes of disgust, surrounded by the things you want to avoid and hate. The last few years have impressively proven what you can expect from humanity, and honestly, it’s not much.”

In advance of the record’s release, today the band unveils a video for first single, “Bodies As Driftwood.” Offers Goncalves dos Reis of the track, “‘Bodies As Driftwood’ tells the story of a fictional person in a fictional big city who, under the cover of night, can finally be herself and escape the ever-increasing malaise of everyday life. Hopes and dreams quickly give way to reality and threaten to break down due to outside pressures: Unpaid bills, problems at work, no social network, loneliness, no help, total overwhelm in a constantly accelerating zeitgeist… But at night she feels free – no punishing glances from others, no outside pressure, no stress, no expectations, just herself in the darkness while the world sleeps. Metaphorically speaking, this person uses the darkness of the night as a protective veil. Although this person is surrounded by millions every day, she experiences absolute loneliness on a daily basis.”
