We review the trades that went down at the NBA Trade Deadline, Dennis Schroder's first action with the Brooklyn Nets, Buddy Hield and Cam Payne's abilities for the Philadelphia 76ers, Deandre Ayton crumbling in Portland, and the Jusuf Nurkic versus Draymond Green beef continues! The Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers both made some moves right before the trade deadline. The Sixers made some head-scratching ones but also brought in the likes of Buddy Hield who provides the type of shooting and scoring that they've needed for a long time. The Nets, on the other hand, got rid of an underperforming Spencer Dinwiddie and brought in a better shooter in Dennis Schroder. On episode 303 of The Atlantic Files, Ben Simmons finally returns to the court again after more issues with his back, Joel Embiid misses another game against Nikola Jokic in Denver, the Los Angeles Lakers are getting extreme favoritism from the refs, and the Golden State Warriors look at potential trade targets to get themselves back into title contention. Ben Simmons has finally returned from his back issues and played his first game since November. He is on a minutes restriction but he still almost posted a triple-double against the Utah Jazz. How long will he remain on the court for the rest of the season and will his back issues keep him off of the court for most of his career? Joel Embiid put on a masterclass in the first of two matchups against Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets. He was set to play in the rematch that took place in Denver but then was surprisingly downgraded to questionable and eventually was sidelined. He hasn't played in Denver since 2019, so now fans think he's scared and ducking Jokic. What happened to the regular season not meaning anything? A stat has been found that proves the Los Angeles Lakers shoot the most free throws out of any team in the NBA. Not only that, but they have the biggest difference in total free throw attempts compared to their opponents. Something seems a bit fishy here, but the Lakers aren't even turning it into wins. So, should we all be mad about it? Finally, the Golden State Warriors are trying to salvage something out of this season after they found themselves in 12th place in the West after half of the season has gone by. #302: Doc Rivers Coming Back To Haunt Us Jan 25, 2024

On episode 302 of The Atlantic Files, Doc Rivers reportedly is the leading candidate to take over the Milwaukee Bucks head coaching vacancy after Adrian Griffin was fired, Terry Rozier was traded to the Miami Heat for Kyle Lowry, Joel Embiid asserts his dominance over Nikola Jokic and the NBA, and is trouble brewing for the first-seed Minnesota Timberwolves? In the biggest news going around the NBA, Doc Rivers is returning to the NBA sidelines as a coach instead of a commentator. It didn't take too long for him to get the itch to coach again as the Milwaukee Bucks fired Adrian Griffin after the team started the season with a 30-13 record. Rivers was reportedly helping out in a consulting format, but that will lead to an actual coaching job now. The other biggest news is probably that Terry Rozier has finally escaped the Charlotte Hornets and was traded to the Miami Heat for a first-round pick and Kyle Lowry. Rozier brings a scoring point guard who can actually get out on the floor without being on the injury report 24/7. Hopefully, the rest of the team can now stay on the floor. Joel Embiid had quite the week. He destroyed Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets, then went on to become the ninth player in NBA history to drop 70 points in a game. If he wasn't the leader for MVP before, he's definitely at the top of the ladder for every outlet now. This is Embiid's world and we're just living in it. Finally, the Minnesota Timberwolves tried to get the ball to Karl-Anthony Towns on the same day that Embiid scored 70 so that he could beat his point total. On episode 297 of The Atlantic Files, Draymond Green gets ejected yet again for hitting someone, the Los Angeles Lakers are the first champions of the in-season tournament, Patrick Beverley asking the real questions on ESPN, and more ejections across the league. Draymond Green threw his limbs all over the place, yet again, and was ejected after hitting Jusuf Nurkic in the face. He says that it wasn't on purpose which is why he apologized, but at this rate, there's no benefit of the doubt. Green has hit enough opposing players to believe that this was no accident by any means. So, does he deserve the indefinite suspension that he received? LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers have officially won the inaugural in-season tournament championship. We're going to call it the NBA Cup because it's a lot easier to say. Either way, some have asked if it was fixed to get the Lakers as the very first champion. Now the debate is whether or not the IST ring counts towards a player's resume and if teams should raise banners. Even though Green deserved to be ejected, there have been a ton of ejections this season and the number keeps increasing. Players are getting thrown out just for disagreeing with foul calls instead of actual hard fouls or wrongdoing. If this trend continues, fans are going to get more and more upset with referees which is something the league does not want. Finally, Patrick Beverley went on ESPN during the in-season tournament finals and had a conversation with Kevin Hart that ruffled some feathers. On episode 293 of The Atlantic Files, Zach LaVine and the Chicago Bulls both have an interest in finding a trade partner for the All-Star guard, NBA Officiating seems to be going off the rails as more techs are handed out and more people are aggravated, James Harden gets obliterated by a Mavs broadcaster, Kelly Oubre Jr. has a scary situation, Zion Williamson doesn't seem happy in New Orleans, and Jordan Poole is finding out quickly that Washington is not Golden State! The Chicago Bulls and Zach LaVine are reportedly talking to teams about potential deals to move the All-Star guard to a new team. It's unclear whether or not this is the start of a full rebuild, but the two sides have a mutual understanding that LaVine is now firmly on the trade block. We take a look at who should make a deal for him. NBA Officiating has been the topic of many discussions in post-game press conferences, social media, and much more so far this season. There have been game-changing calls, ejections out of nowhere, and even more questionable events that have caused even coaches to say things and get fined for talking about the refs. Is it especially bad this year or just par for the course? Kelly Oubre Jr. unfortunately experienced a terrifying situation when he was hit by a car as he was just a pedestrian walking around his residence. The good thing is that his injuries are not as severe as originally expected, but after such a hot start, he'll now be out for a while to heal from broken ribs and other injuries. Speaking of players that may be on the trade block, Zion Williamson seemed very unhappy with his situation in New Orleans during a post-game press conference. Also, Jordan Poole is finding out very quickly that the Washington Wizards are nothing like the Golden State Warriors and it might be pretty difficult to be the best player on a team. On episode 293 of The Atlantic Files, James Harden says he was on a leash in Philadelphia and he isn't a system player, Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren are putting on a show, two Atlantic division teams are at the top of the East while the others have shown a mixed bag, and the Milwaukee Bucks haven't been as good as expected so far. James Harden does his first press conference since joining the Los Angeles Clippers and he talks about how he was on a leash in Philadelphia and that he needs a coach that he can trust who will also trust him. This is news to all of us, including Joel Embiid who was confused by his comments and said that they gave him the ball on every possession. Make this drama make sense, please! Damian Lillard and the Milwaukee Bucks have yet to show their full potential after suffering a couple of bad losses in the early going of this season. Inefficient shooting, poor defense, and ejections have caused the team to look like they regressed from last year. Is this team actually as much of a title contender as everyone thought or did they ship out too much of their depth to be as good as they used to be? Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren have been garnering all the hype for quite a while now. Deservedly so, these two rookies have lived up to all of the expectations and then some! Both of them have turned into must-see TV and have raised the level of each of their teams. This race for Rookie of the Year may be one of the closest in a long time! Finally, we take a look at the Atlantic Division so far and how they've fared over the first few weeks of the season. The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers are at the top of the division and the conference while the other three are all next to each other in play-in territory. This is shaping up to be a fun year! This week on the Atlantic Files Podcast, we take a look at some NBA 2K23 ratings, give our best and worst ratings, predict some ratings, talk about the Patrick Beverley to Los Angeles trade, Gilbert Arenas comments about Giannis Antetokounmpo, John Wall admitting to some very dark days, RJ Barrett's extension, and the Brooklyn Nets signing Markieff Morris. NBA 2K23's release date is fast approaching. The time is coming when everyone sees what all the players' new ratings are and then the debates begin while everyone throws insults at the game developers who chose the ratings. Since the ratings aren't officially out yet, we decided to look at the latest ratings from NBA 2K22 and then come up with who we think should be the new top ten in the latest game. Patrick Beverley was shipped to Utah in the Rudy Gobert trade, but now he's on the move yet again. The Los Angeles Lakers shipped out Stanley Johnson and Talen Horton-Tucker to bring in Beverley's services. He even went on TV and said that if the Lakers had him on their team that they would have won the Finals. Time to put those words into existence. Gilbert Arenas is making his rounds on the internet again. This time, he talked about how Giannis Antetokounmpo doesn't really understand the game of basketball or understand how to train his body. Seeing as Giannis is a MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, Champion, and Finals MVP, those are some interesting words. Is there any truth to them? John Wall, in an interview, admitted that he was in a very dark place the last few years. His basketball future was up in the air, and that was bringing a dark cloud with it over his personal life. We're all hoping he gets back to the John Wall we all knew and loved, and hopefully the dark days are a thing of the past. We had a couple of signings in the last couple of days as well. RJ Barrett inked a nice extension with the New York Knicks for up to $120M and the Brooklyn Nets signed Markieff Morris to bolster their bench unit. #242: Donovan Mitchell Finally Traded to Cleveland Sep 08, 2022

This week on the Atlantic Files Podcast, Donovan Mitchell was finally traded and the New York Knicks saga is over. Should the Cleveland Cavaliers be considered a championship team now, Montrezl Harrell heads to the Philadelphia 76ers, Shaq says Kevin Durant is a failure outside of Golden State years, who will the next target be for the New York Knicks, Giannis, Jokic, and Luka all breaking records in EuroBasket, Rudy Gobert flashing improved post game during EuroBasket as well, and our weekly "Whatchu Got" segment! Trading Donovan Mitchell was an entire saga this off-season. Danny Ainge and the Utah Jazz were holding out for the most draft capital they could get. Finally, they decided to pull the trigger on a non-Knicks deal. The Cleveland Cavaliers swooped in with some more picks and pretty good young players to boot. Now, we might see Mitchell competing for an Eastern Conference Finals title. Does this trade make the Cavaliers a surefire top-three seed though? Could they even realistically compete for a championship this season? Now, the New York Knicks have to change their direction of which superstar to target. Which assets are they going to use now to find another disgruntled star? Shai Gilgeous-Alexander may be on the market if the Oklahoma City Thunder continue tanking like they are. Speaking of players moving teams, Montrezl Harrell is now on his way to Philadelphia. The 76ers have been on the market for a backup big after Andre Drummond left. Especially since Doc Rivers never trusts Paul Reed, Harrell gives them another look behind Joel Embiid. On Shaq's podcast, he said that Kevin Durant is essentially a failure outside of his Golden State Warriors days. Is that even fair to say or is it way out of line? This week on The Atlantic Files, we continue our division previews with the defending champ Golden State Warriors and the Pacific Division, Doc Rivers gets horny on Twitter, a lot of new statement jerseys have been revealed, is the NBA's punishment for the Phoenix Suns owner enough, additions and adjustments to the CBA, and Dennis Schroder heads back to the Los Angeles Lakers. The divisional preview series continues as this week we take a look at the Golden State Warriors and the Pacific Division. While a lot of people seem to think the division goes through Los Angeles in either the Lakers or Clippers, we lean towards Golden State yet again. This week on The Atlantic Files, we have regular season basketball to talk about! With that being said, we dove into each Atlantic division team to see how they're doing three-to-four games into the season. Then, we gave our biggest takeaways from the rest of the league so far into this first week or so. First, we have to bring up the Philadelphia 76ers due to how much hype they were receiving coming into the season. So far, they've delivered the exact opposite of the expectations that were bestowed upon them. Joel Embiid has looked pretty awful, James Harden has actually looked phenomenal, and the rest of the team can't play defense. The Boston Celtics, on the other hand, are looking like the team that made the NBA Finals last season. Jayson Tatum is looking like an MVP candidate while the rest of the team is seemingly coming together with some great chemistry. Once their schedule ramps up, we'll find out a lot about this team. Then, we get to Brooklyn where the Nets are also underachieving just like the Sixers. #251: Kyrie Irving Suspended, Jacque Vaughn Hired Nov 10, 2022

This week on the Atlantic Files podcast, Kyrie Irving was suspended after last week's episode and then was given a list of initiatives to finish before he can even come back to the Brooklyn Nets, Jacque Vaughn gets upgraded from interim to head coach instead of Ime Udoka, James Harden and Pascal Siakam are both out for an extended time, and Kawhi Leonard has a cloudy path back to playing. Some of the biggest non-basketball news has been unfolding before us and all of Brooklyn. After Kyrie Irving promoted a controversial video that had anti-semetic tropes, he was suspended from the Brooklyn Nets and now he has a laundry list of items to fulfill before he's allowed back to the team. The NBPA is expected to appeal the suspension, but Irving has also been meeting with front-office members of the team as well as the NBA's commissioner. This whole sideshow drags on as Nets fans have to watch their team try to finally live up to expectations. In a smarter move from the Nets, they ended up not going with Ime Udoka as their next head coach. Former assistant coach, Jacque Vaughn, received the promotion to head coach for at least the rest of the season. Since he's been there for the last five-to-six seasons, the players all know him and he can connect the pieces of the roster. His last tenure as a head coach in Orlando didn't go too well though. Kawhi Leonard continues to sit out more games than he plays since getting to Los Angeles. Now, he's out indefinitely yet again while the recovery process doesn't go as planned. What exactly is happening with all of this? Did something happen that caused a setback? Nobody seems to have any answers. Finally, James Harden and Pascal Siakam both suffered injuries that are going to keep them out for an extended period of time. Can both of their teams stay afloat until they come back? #252: Joel Embiid and Kevin Durant Setting Historic Marks Nov 17, 2022

On this week's episode of The Atlantic Files, Joel Embiid does something that no other NBA player has ever done, Kevin Durant is chasing Michael Jordan, both the Sixers and the Nets are starting to wake up, the Boston Celtics are on a 7-game winning streak, What should the Knicks do with Thibodeau and RJ Barrett, who's the bigger disappointment so far between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors, and we gave some fantasy basketball advice along the way. At the time of recording, Kevin Durant had started the season with 13 consecutive games of 25 or more points scored. That mark hasn't been reached since Michael Jordan who did it in 16 games in a row at the start of the 1988-89 season. After recording, Durant collected another 25-point game to push his total to 14. He may just end up tying Jordan or even getting more than him. Joel Embiid made some history himself as he put up a stat line that has never been done before in NBA history. He finished the game against the Utah Jazz with 59 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, and 7 blocks. No player has ever had a game with 50 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 blocks. To add to that, he scored a total of 101 points in one weekend as this historic game was the second half of a back-to-back and he scored 42 points in the game prior. Led by their superstar players, both the Brooklyn Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers have been waking up in recent weeks. They've been winning more than losing and both teams are looking a lot more energetic than at the beginning of the season. Maybe we'll finally start to see these two teams get back to the top of the East sooner rather than later. Speaking about the top of the East, the Boston Celtics are in first place again. They've been firing on all cylinders and the early part of their schedule hasn't exactly been too difficult. Can they keep this type of play up without their head coach or is this all just a tease before things come crashing down? Then, there's the opposite in the train wreck which is the New York Knicks. They aren't as big of a train wreck as they once were, they're now an average train wreck. So who should be to blame here, Tom Thibodeau, RJ Barrett, or someone else? Something has to give to actually push this team into real contention. Finally, we debated which team has been a bigger disappointment thus far between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Golden State Warriors. The reigning champs have yet to win a single road game. This week on the Atlantic Files podcast, Ben Simmons returned to Philadelphia to take on the 76ers, injuries are mounting for the Sixers with Tyrese Maxey also out, RJ Barrett has been struggling mightily this season, Giannis Antetokounmpo got in a fight with Montrezl Harrell and a ladder, Paul Reed has been balling, Kemba Walker is headed to the Dallas Mavericks, Karl Anthony Towns is hurt, and more! We're back after the Thanksgiving break so of course, we had to talk about the Philadelphia 76ers taking on the Brooklyn Nets and Ben Simmons' first regular season game back in Philly. The game should have been a blowout as the Sixers had their big three on the sidelines, but the sixers won easily. Simmons had a good game, but Paul Reed had an even better one. Speaking of Paul Reed, he's now on his victory tour again. Doc Rivers is finally listening to the hype as Reed gets more playing time and proves why he's worthy of it. He's had some great games with Joel Embiid out and even continued the defensive energy as a backup. RJ Barrett has been struggling mightily lately. His issues are indicative of the whole team's issues, however, a lot of this starts with one of their main three offensive options. Barrett hasn't been able to shoot well at all and has new lows in a lot of categories across the board. Is this just a rut or will he continue to struggle in this system and lose more games for the Knicks? Another older topic that we didn't get a chance to comment on was laddergate with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Montrezl Harrell after the Milwaukee Bucks dropped a game in Philly. This has to be one of the dumbest and funniest bits of drama in the NBA. Everyone involved in this should have just gone home and called it a night, but instead, we had everyone talking bout who's morally right or wrong. #254: Scottie Barnes' Sophomore Slump Dec 08, 2022

On this week's episode of The Atlantic Files Podcast, Scottie Barnes continues to have a rough sophomore season for the Toronto Raptors, James Harden struggles in his return from injury, Anthony Davis is dominating the league and staying healthy, Bradley Beal admits that no winning teams gave him an offer, Trae Young and Nate McMillan aren't seeing eye-to-eye, and more! Many basketball pundits and Twitter basketball "experts" have been commenting on Scottie Barnes's lackluster season so far. He was expected to take a huge leap in his sophomore year but has struggled from time to time as he gets used to teams writing up game plans against him. He's going to be just as fine as he has shown improvement in other areas of his game whether his scoring is down or not. James Harden returned to the court with the Philadelphia 76ers after around a month of sitting out. Against his former team, the Houston Rockets, he certainly showed a lot of rust. He didn't shoot well and turned the ball over in crucial moments during a double-overtime loss. Anthony Davis caught a lot of flack from us on this podcast. His health was always in question and he was missing more games than he was playing. This season, however, he's been playing through almost anything and he's returned to a dominant force. Seeing him dominate again has been a great sight for the Los Angeles Lakers fans. In a surprising quote, Bradley Beal admitted to not getting any offers from winning teams in the off-season. Usually, players of his status don't admit something like that. There's not much surprise to go with that statement though.
