Promotion is not only a good thing, it’s absolutely necessary.

    E90 | Coaching As Improv May 20, 2020
    Show notes

It’s been a long three months, but we are excited to announce that our Apprenticeship™ events are BACK! Starting July 25-26th in Charleston, SC., join us for a transformative learning experience. Don’t believe me? Maybe today’s episode will change your mind.

Looking back, did you know what was going to happen to you today? How about the last 72 hours? 3 months? Chances are you had no idea. That’s because everything we do in life is improv. No, not the improv that you pay to see at a comedy club… improv as in role playing under situational constraints.

Today’s episode is one we all need because let’s face it, right now we are all improvising. We are all having to adapt to certain constraints. So let’s dig into how to be agile and leverage spontaneity to overcome our old systematized, controlled processes.

    Today’s episode goes into:

    • The origins and definitions of improv

    • How other fields use improvisation training and why coaching needs something similar

    • The real reason we are scared to engage in improvised learning/practice

    • Principles of improvisation: spontaneity, collaboration, boundaries, etc.

    • "Improv is a process not a product"

If this episode is at all intriguing, you’ll LOVE our Apprenticeship™ workshop. Make sure to check out our next locations and dates using the link below. We’d love to see you there.

Hey everyone, today’s interview is with my friend Lyle Henley. Lyle is the Director of Performance for Football at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. We dive into what it is like being the strength coach for a college football team during the Coronavirus madness, maintaining these relationships, and much more!

Coach Henley grew up in Warren, Arkansas, a small logging town in the southern portion of the state, and was a member of the Louisiana Tech football program from 1994-1998. He began his career at linebacker before moving to tight end his senior year and was a member of the Bulldogs squad that defeated Alabama in a rain-soaked homecoming at Bryant-Denny Stadium in 1997.

Now in his fourth year, Henley believes the fruits of the program's labor have come to fruition. There is trust instilled between his staff and the athletes, a productive product on the field and endless energy inside and outside the operations facility. It's not just noticeable to him and coaches, however, as the players continuously laud the training program under Henley.
