Family health, happiness, and embracing our emotions with Christi Straub Jul 01, 2019
    Show notes

I’m with the delightful Christi Straub. Christi is a licensed family and marriage counselor. Christi shares about the challenges she sees most families facing today. She also talks about why owning and naming emotions is so crucial, both for parents and children.

    In this episode we discuss:

    1. Breaking the busy cycles in family life

    2. The most important thing our children need from us

    3. Why emotional safety is a vital part of your family's health

    Favorite quotes:

    1. I think once we start to really see ourselves as just a human, or our spouses as human, and our kids as humans, we start to recognize our individual strengths and weaknesses and we’re not trying so hard to create little super beings that they’re not going to be. There’s a whole lot of rest and peace and purpose that comes from that!

    2. A feeling is just a feeling, it’s not in charge of you.

    3. We have to first name and recognize what we’re feeling in order to gain control of it so it doesn’t get to control us.

    4. Are we creating an environment that is emotionally safe? Meaning that emotions are talked about and that starts with us. Are we modeling emotions?

In this episode I answer these questions:

    1. How can I get my kids to do chores? They’re 6 and 8. (47:54)

    2. What is your take on the law of attraction? (51:46)

    3. How do I know if I’m ready for a business coach? (56:51)

Jo Saxton on overcoming imposter syndrome, self-sabotage, and getting out of our own way Jun 24, 2019
    Show notes

I'm calling this "The Summer Of My Favorite Women" so it's only appropriate that I'm joined again by the marvelous Jo Saxton.

Today, Jo shares some tips for women who tend to self-sabotage and what to do when imposter syndrome strikes. She also shares about what she's currently dreaming to accomplish and why.

    In this episode we discuss:

    1. Why women tend to shrink back from leadership.

    2. How to get out of your own way

    3. How to surround yourself with the right people

    Favorite quotes:

    1. Just because it’s your vision, doesn’t mean other people have the eyes to see it and they don’t have to.

    2. Virtual access is still better than no access at all and it can be the start of a different kind of mentoring, a different kind of illustration for how you can step into what you are called to do.

    3. Some of our dreams and visions are ahead of the technology we have at the time.

    4. One of the biggest life givers or life killers of your dreams, ideas, business -- the people you surround yourself with.

    5. We are all people of influence and we don’t need to be afraid of it because leadership doesn’t automatically mean a certain personality type.

In this episode I answer these questions:

    1. Could you give me just one tip that will make me a better communicator? (43:16)

    2. What’s the difference between religion and a relationship with Jesus? (43:44)

Alexa Schirm on health, natural beauty, and balancing hormones. Jun 17, 2019
    Show notes

Today we are joined by nutritionist and cleaning living enthusiast Alexa Schirm. I wanted her back to the show as a repeat guest to get practical tips on how to make small changes in our beauty and health routines that add up for big benefits.

    In this episode we discuss:

    1. How our beauty routine can help or hurt our overall wellness.

    2. Understanding our hormones and why they are so important.

    3. How certain anti-aging products can actually have a reverse effect.

    Favorite quotes:

    1. If you really want to come and work with your body and get healthy and lose weight possible, one great place to start is our hormones and the reason is because that's what is communicating with our entire body.

    2. What have we learned in the past by giving up a whole entire macronutrient? That we always end up sicker on the other side. Carbohydrates are an essential part of hormone function.

    3. Fruit was a gift from God, I just can’t say that is safe to give up.

    4. Naturally speaking in some cases it is better for women to be a little bit on the heavier side then underweight, fertility speaking. And so it is hard for women to lose weight, it’s not something that our bodies naturally wants to do and do it well.

In this episode I answer these questions:

    1. How do I overcome a victim mentality? (46:13)

    2. Do I have to go to church to be a Christian? (53:25)

    3. How long should I work for free in hopes that it will pay off in the long run? (57:16)

Ruth Soukup on surviving, thriving, and why we need to do it scared Jun 10, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode, we are joined by business powerhouse Ruth Soukup. Ruth shares her incredible journey of overcoming depression, suicide attempts, and self-harm to becoming a healthy mom and wife and successful entrepreneur. Ruth also shares why her motto "Do it Scared" is so important for her both in life and business.

    In this episode we discuss:

    1. Why you should bravely take action in your life and business, even if you're terrified

    2. How to recognize your unique brand of fear

    3. How to break through debilitating cycles and find courage

    Favorite quotes:

    1. Stop chasing the numbers that you think mean you’re popular and start chasing the numbers that are actually going to make a difference in your business.

    2. So often people think that “well I need more page views or I need more likes on Instagram or I need more followers in order to make more money,” and that’s absolutely not true. If you’re not leveraging the audience you have, you’re never going to be leveraging the audience you wish you had.

    3. It is because of those hard times, not despite them, that I’m now able to have the business that I have.

    4. There was never one moment when it magically all turned around. I think so often in life we expect there to be this magical moment, you know this huge turning point of saying “oh from now on my life is going to be different.” It didn’t work that way for me.

    5. No matter how badly you up your life, you can always turn it around.

    6. Fear impacts us, whether we call it fear or anxiety or we call it this apprehension about moving forward.

    7. Once you can start to identify that fear and start to see those patterns in your life, that’s when you can start to do something about it.

In this episode I answer these questions:

    1. What do I need to do to make my skin look great as I near my 40s? (48:26)

    2. What should I do if I don’t agree with all of my church’s teachings? (54:50)

Michael Hyatt on thriving in leadership, secrets to successful entrepreneurship, and the power of delegation May 27, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode, we are joined by productivity guru and business giant Michael Hyatt. Michael shares the counterintuitive secret behind why his company grew by 65% last year. He also shares why a work/life balance is vital to great work and how can practically implement guard rails to protect our time.

    In this episode we discuss:

    1. Why working less could actually help your business grow more.

    2. How to eliminate distractions and focus on what really matters to your growth.

    3. How to use the ingredients of play, rest, and delegating to thrive as an entrepreneur.

    Favorite quotes:

    1. Constraints are not the enemy but our friend.

    2. I want to win at work and succeed at life and I think both those things are possible.

    3. Focus is a superpower. Especially in a day and age where the average person is so distracted, we really have an opportunity to stand out if we can regain our focus and do the task that drives the results.

    4. Our time is fixed. It’s a zero-sum game. When I say yes to one thing, I’m going to implicitly say no to something else. I gotta understand the tradeoff and there is a tradeoff so what am I willing to trade.

    5. When you’re not rested you’re not focused, you’re not productive. You’re easily distracted.

    6. Productivity is more about managing your energy than managing your time.

Carlos Whittaker on killing the spiders, living a life of trust, and being the world’s best on Instastories May 20, 2019
    Show notes

I’m with the amazing Carlos Whittaker to talk about his dramatic career shift from leading worship to becoming a best-selling author and speaker.

We'll also discuss what it means to kill the proverbial spiders in our lives and how we can truly pursue a life of freedom and abundance. You are going to love this one!

    In this episode we discuss:

    1. His dramatic career change

    2. How he landed his first speaking gig at the White House

    3. How to really change our behavior and our lives

    4. How to kill the proverbial spiders in our life

    Favorite quotes:

    1. I felt like God was telling me it was time to stop leading worship and singing and start writing a book. And, for me because I did all the work ahead of time with my blog—I had spent years building a tribe of people that were used to reading what I had to say, that wasn’t going to be a hard transition for them. But, for me, it was scary. How in the world was I going to do the speaking and the writing thing?

    2. I feel like a lot of worship leaders come up to me and say, “I think I want to do something else.” I always say, “Awesome. How have you been building into what that next thing is? That is what you are going to need to do right now and it’s going to take a little time.”

    3. My father said to me, “Carlos, I’ve watched you your entire life clean the cobwebs of sin. You can no longer clean the cobwebs. You must kill the spider, the root of your behavior.”

In this episode I answer these questions:

    1. I saw you taught on “mom guilt” for Mother’s Day. Can I watch the sermon anywhere and can you share some wisdom from it? (47:33)

    2. What version of the Bible do you use? My church uses NIV and NLT and my Bible Study uses ESV. I want to make sure that I’m using the right versions and I trust your opinion. (55:40)

    3. Did you have a mentor who taught you how to communicate professionally from the stage and on your show? (57:15)

Links to great things we discussed: 1. Kill the Spider 2. Moment Maker 3. 21 Day Detox- Dr. Caroline Leaf 4. The OA on Netflix 5. Walking With God by John Eldridge 6. The Samsung Frame 7. Jordan Lee Dooley on overcoming the pressure to prove, boundaries, and fighting for health May 13, 2019
    Show notes

On this episode, we are joined by the young and wise Jordan Lee Dooley. Jordan shares the amazing backstory of how she started her online business and turned a college hobby into a thriving business. She also shares her raw and real story of dealing with body issues and her journey to complete freedom.

    In this episode we discuss:

    1. How she turned her side hobby into a thriving business

    2. How we can overcome an unhealthy “pressure to prove”

    3. Setting boundaries around our goals

    4. Her struggle and victory in finding a healthy body image

    Favorite quotes:

    1. I’ve found a lot of times the reasons we don’t do things or step into new things or start small is really a mindset problem and not a skill-set problem.

    2. What we take from social media—what we choose to do with it is actually up to us. And what we choose to internalize is up to us. There is a lot of external pressures, but it is our responsibility as to how we handle those.

    3. When you are so focused on what you are missing out on, you are missing out on where you are, what you can actually do, and the power you have.

In this episode I answer these questions:

    1. What is your favorite beauty splurge this month? I know how you love your makeup. (33:33)

    2. My son is in pre-school. We can’t decide whether we should send him to public school, Christian private school, or homeschool. What is your advice for us as Christian parents? (35:55)

Audrey Roloff on finding your lane, balancing work and life, and love May 06, 2019
    Show notes

On this episode, we are joined by the lovely Audrey Roloff to talk about her new book co-written with her husband Jeremy called A Love Letter Life.

Audrey and I chat about life as a reality TV star, how to stay creative and flexible as an online entrepreneur, and how to discern the right season for our callings.

She also shares advice for young couples and how she and her husband learned to approach conflict in a healthy way.

    In this episode we discuss:

    1. Transitioning from Reality TV to entrepreneur.

    2. Finding your lane in the season you are in.

    3. Balancing work and family life.

    Favorite quotes:
    1. At the end of my life, I don’t want to be known for doing 10 things just kind of okay. I want to be known for doing one thing really really well and leaving a legacy in it.

    2. Our gifting doesn’t outpace our maturity.

    3. We may be gifted in something but God still has some maturing to do in that area, or it just may not be the right time and we need to be patient. And even though we may be qualified on paper to do something or have the skills to do something, doesn’t necessarily mean that we should.

    4. So many people spend all this time preparing for and planning an epic wedding but then they don’t prepare or plan for an epic marriage. The wedding day is just a day but your marriage is forever.

In this episode I answer these questions:

    1. I want to learn more about body language, what can you teach me? (42:33)

    2. What do you do when your spouse is saying no to what you think God is calling you to do? Would God give me a dream and not put my husband on the same page? (48:49)

    3. I feel uncomfortable building a platform for myself but I keep hearing that I have to have one. Help! (54:47)
