    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

My guest is Damon Korb, M.D., a board-certified developmental and behavioral pediatrician who examines the neurodevelopmental brain functions that determine how a child learns, behaves, and socializes. As the clinic director of the Center for Developing Minds, he guides a team of child development experts who care for struggling children and young adults. With the recent publication of his award-winning book Raising an Organized Child, Dr. Korb aims to provide parents with an assortment of tools to help their children develop the skills they need to thrive. Dr. Korb has nearly 30 years of pediatric practice experience, including 25 years focusing on child behavior and development.

In this episode, Dr. Korb explains the complexities of ADHD, describing it as a genetic neurological condition that affects focus, attention, and self-control. He highlights the impact of ADHD on children's school performance, mentioning higher dropout rates, increased reprimands, and the struggle with consistency. He also discusses how these challenges affect children psychologically and emotionally.

Dr. Korb introduces the concept of mental energy, processing controls, and self-control as key components of a functioning attention system. He explains how breakdowns in any of these areas can manifest differently in each child, influencing their behavior at home and school.

To help children with ADHD, Dr. Korb outlines five steps to raising an organized child: be consistent, introduce order, give everything a place, practice forward-thinking, and promote problem-solving.

Dr. Korb provides practical advice on managing screen time and implementing organizational tools like calendars and planners. He stresses the importance of collaboration between parents and children in creating effective systems and routines.

In conclusion, Dr. Korb encourages parents to seek assessment if they suspect ADHD, read relevant literature, maintain perspective, and support their children with patience and love. He acknowledges the challenges of parenting but emphasizes the long-term goal of helping children become successful adults.

ADHD and Anxiety in Kids: How to Tell What’s Going On and How to Help — Kristen McNeely, LMFT, BCBA Jul 15, 2024
    Show notes

Is it ADHD, anxiety, or both, and how can parents tell what their child actually needs?

In this episode of The ADHD Kids Can Thrive Podcast, Kate Brownfield, ACC, talks with Kristen McNeely, LMFT, BCBA, a licensed marriage and family therapist, board-certified behavior analyst, school behavioral specialist, and parent consultant who works with children experiencing anxiety and behavioral challenges.

ADHD and anxiety can overlap in ways that make everyday parenting especially confusing. A child may avoid homework, struggle to follow directions, feel overwhelmed by school demands, complain of stomachaches, resist going to school, or seem unmotivated but the reason behind the behavior matters.

Kristen explains some of the differences between ADHD and anxiety, why the two can occur together, and how parents can provide support without unintentionally increasing pressure.

    In this conversation, we discuss:

    • How ADHD and anxiety can look similar and how they differ
    • Why children with ADHD may be more vulnerable to stress and anxiety
    • How predictability, visual supports, timers, and breaking tasks into smaller steps can help
    • When it is appropriate for parents to step in and help with schoolwork
    • Why helping a child structure a task is different from doing the work for them
    • How parents can advocate for 504 plans, IEPs, and school-based support
    • What to do when school anxiety begins turning into school refusal
    • Why coping skills should be practiced when a child is calm, not only during a meltdown
    • Why it can be healthy for a parent to step away and regulate themselves before responding
    • How external motivation and rewards can help ADHD children experience success
    • Why parents should not compare the support their ADHD child needs with what works for neurotypical children
    • When individualized professional support may be more helpful than another parenting tip from social media

Kristen also offers an important reminder about school refusal: when a child begins showing signs that anxiety is interfering with school attendance, sleep, friendships, or daily functioning, early support and a coordinated plan can matter.

For parents wondering whether their child is anxious, overwhelmed, avoiding, unmotivated, or struggling because of ADHD executive-function challenges, this episode offers practical ways to think about what may be happening and when it may be time to bring in additional support.

Parenting a Teen With ADHD: Meet Your Child Where They Are — A Mom’s Perspective Jun 24, 2024
    Show notes

What if supporting your child with ADHD starts with meeting them where they are, not where you think they should be?

In this episode of The ADHD Kids Can Thrive Podcast, Kate Brownfield talks with her longtime friend Lisa, a fellow parent raising a son with ADHD, about the real-life decisions, worries, experiments, and perspective shifts that come with parenting a neurodivergent teenager.

This is not an expert interview. It is a candid conversation between two moms who have lived through many of the same questions parents ask themselves every day:

Is my child really learning? Am I helping too much? Does he need more support? How do I protect his confidence while also helping him become more independent?

Lisa shares what she learned while supporting her son through school, executive-function challenges, ADHD evaluation and treatment decisions, coaching, homework, online learning, procrastination, and the everyday difficulty of helping a teenager stay on track.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • Why “meeting your child where they are” can change the way you parent
    • How ADHD struggles at school can affect a teenager’s confidence and self-esteem
    • Why good grades do not always mean a child has mastered the underlying material
    • How missed learning can accumulate over time
    • The challenge of figuring out how much support an ADHD teen actually needs
    • Lisa’s experience navigating ADHD evaluation, medication decisions, tutoring, and coaching
    • How ADHD coaching helped her son work on executive-function skills
    • Why movement and changing physical state sometimes helped with focus and task initiation
    • How procrastination can make even small tasks feel much bigger
    • Why parents may need to experiment with different tools rather than expect one strategy to solve everything
    • How pressure around school and achievement can affect the whole family
    • Why connection, confidence, friendships, movement, and well-being matter alongside academic success

One of Lisa’s biggest lessons is simple:

Meet your child where they are today.

That does not mean giving up on expectations or independence. It means recognizing the child in front of you, finding the supports that actually help, and remembering that progress may look different from the path you expected.

Lisa also shares how she became increasingly aware of the power a parent’s approval can have on an ADHD child. Rather than communicating disappointment when her son struggled, she began emphasizing that they were doing the best they could and that he could ask for help when he needed it.

For parents newly navigating ADHD or who simply need to hear from another parent who understands the messy middle, this episode offers reassurance, practical perspective, and a reminder that your child’s path doesn't have to look like anyone else’s.

Krissy will discuss the concept of balanced parenting and share her expertise on how parents can grow alongside their struggling adolescents or young adults, particularly those with ADHD.

Chrissy explains how balanced parenting, with healthy emotional boundaries, can help children develop essential life skills and self-regulation.

Chrissy also introduces four key principles for effective parenting: maintaining parental authority, emotional attunement, holding behavioral boundaries, and valuing struggle. These principles can transform the home environment, promoting a child's independence and self-esteem.

Additionally, Chrissy shares her experiences from wilderness therapy programs and offers guidance on when such interventions might be necessary. She emphasizes the importance of integrating these changes back into the home for lasting impact.

CBT for ADHD: Helping Teens and Young Adults Get Unstuck — Dr. Russell Ramsay Jun 10, 2024
    Show notes

Your teen with ADHD may know exactly what they need to do. So why can’t they just do it?

In this episode of The ADHD Kids Can Thrive Podcast, Kate Brownfield, ACC, talks with Dr. J. Russell Ramsay, psychologist, author, and leading expert in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for ADHD, about how CBT can help teens and young adults turn intentions into action.

CBT for ADHD is not simply about changing negative thoughts or “thinking positively.” Dr. Ramsay explains how ADHD-focused CBT addresses real-life executive-functioning challenges: getting started, procrastination, planning, breaking large tasks into manageable steps, following through, managing avoidance, and recovering when things don’t go according to plan.

    In this conversation, we discuss:

    • What Cognitive Behavioral Therapy actually is
    • How CBT has been adapted specifically for ADHD
    • Why “I know what I need to do, but I just don’t do it” is such a common ADHD experience
    • How CBT helps identify exactly where procrastination and follow-through break down
    • Why realistic planning and breaking tasks into smaller steps matter
    • How ADHD-related inconsistency can contribute to anxiety and lower confidence
    • Why avoidance may relieve anxiety temporarily but often makes the problem bigger later
    • The difference between ADHD coaching and CBT therapy, and where they overlap
    • When anxiety, depression, trauma, rejection sensitivity, or other concerns may require additional therapeutic support
    • How long ADHD-focused CBT may take and why practicing skills between sessions matters
    • Why a teen or young adult’s readiness for change is important
    • How parents can “plant seeds” even when their child is not completely ready to engage
    • Why finding an ADHD-informed therapist matters

One of Dr. Ramsay’s most useful ideas is that the problem often isn’t knowing the strategy. Most people already know they should start earlier, use a planner, or break a large assignment into smaller pieces.

The harder question is: What gets in the way of actually doing it?

That is where ADHD-focused CBT can help. By looking closely at thoughts, emotions, avoidance patterns, executive-function challenges, and day-to-day behavior, teens and young adults can begin developing strategies that work for their brain and their life.

For parents considering therapy for an ADHD teen or young adult, this episode offers a practical explanation of what CBT can and cannot do, how it differs from coaching, and what to consider when deciding whether your child is ready for this type of support.
