NBC To Stream Producer's Cut of "Branch Closing" 11/9/06 Nov 06, 2006
    Show notes

Wow... this is pretty big news. Not sure if I appreciate having to watch the show on the web, though.

NBC'S 'THE OFFICE' WEB EVENT STREAMS ONLY ON NBC.COM

"Producer's Cut" To Be Web-Exclusive Event On NBC.com On November 9th

BURBANK, Calif. November 6, 2006 NBC's Emmy-winning comedy "The Office" (Thursdays, 8:30 9:00pm ET/PT) will offer fans a first-ever, web-exclusive "producer's cut" on November 9th. The episode will include additional scenes and extra footage not shown in the broadcast version. Viewers can log onto NBC.com at 9:00pm (PT) on November 9th to see the web-exclusive event.

The announcement was made today by Vivi Zigler, executive vice president NBC digital entertainment and new media.

"This is a first-of-its-kind and a real bonus for fans of 'The Office,'" said Zigler. "It's also a natural for this show which has continually pushed the envelope in the digital landscape. We're seeing an incredible audience reaction to the evolving digital extensions of our programming and anticipate this being one of their favorites."

In the pivotal November 9th episode, Jan (Melora Hardin) tells Michael (Steve Carell) that the Scranton Branch will be shutting down and Michael strives to keep his staff's spirits up. Meanwhile, everyone privately begins to envision how their lives will change in the aftermath. Rainn Wilson, Jenna Fischer, John Krasinski, B.J. Novak, David Denman, Leslie David Baker, Brian Baumgartner, Kate Flannery, Angela Kinsey, Phyllis Smith, Paul Lieberstein and Mindy Kaling also star, and Ed Helms ("The Daily Show"), Rashida Jones ("Wanted") and Charles Esten ("Whose Line Is It Anyway?") guest-star.

Through October 29, "The Office" has averaged a 4.0 rating, 10 share in adults 18-49 and 8.5 million viewers overall, making it this Fall's #3 half-hour comedy on any network in adults 18-49. "The Office" is also primetime's most upscale comedy, with the highest concentration of homes with $100,000-plus incomes and highest median income for its 18-49 audience among network comedies. "The Office" has improved the Thursday 8:30pm half-hour for NBC by 14 percent versus the network's 18-49 average at this point last season. "The Office" has matched or improved upon its adult 18-49 lead-in from "My Name is Earl" with every first-run telecast this Fall.

    Episode # 6.0 -- Diwali (11/2/06) Nov 06, 2006
    Show notes

Episode # 6.0 of THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID finds both Matt and Ian battling for the hearts, minds, and souls of the American people. It's Diwali time folks, and the office gang heads out into the real world for some big fun... hindu style! Could Jim get any drunker? Could Michael retain any self esteem? The indigo boys reunion tour? Will Kevin see a podiatrist? Just what, exactly, *IS* the union of the monkey? and What's wrong with dating Zack Braff? From Jim's iPod this week, Michael Scott with the DIWALI SONG. Incidental music provided by the Podshow Podsafe Music Network. Just a Warning... Nov 04, 2006
    Show notes

This is sort of a really horrible weekend for me... I have to calculate the final quarter grades for 150 students, to be turned in by Tuesday at 8am. This means that I am going to have to be busting my ass today and Sunday (and Monday night) to try and get this task accomplished.Long story short, I'm not sure when episode #6.0 will be recorded/posted.Now, don't freak out or anything :) but I just want to give you all a heads up in case it is perhaps later than usual. It still might be up on Sunday night as usual, but I can't promise anything. Thanks for your patience.

The British Are Coming... Back. Nov 04, 2006
    Show notes

So I'm guessing this may be old news for the forum browsing crowd, but it was news to me tonight--Kristin Veitch over at TV Guide is reporting that original "The Office" creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant have turned their attention to the US version and have penned an episode set to air on November 30th.Titled "The Convict," the episode will revolve around Michael discovering that one of his new coworkers has a criminal past. Stay tuned... I'm sure the Daytona Beach News-Journal will soon declare it the "funniest episode ever!"(ah, sweet, sweet sarcasm...)

    The Office -- Episode # 3.6 "Diwali" Nov 02, 2006
    Show notes

Well, I've only managed to watch this episode once so far, so I'm not sure what my FINAL opinion will be by the time we record TWSS #6.0, but I'll try to give some of my initial impressions...Seems like there was some "hate" for this episode, or, if not HATE exactly, a lot of "eh, it was OK" kind of sentiment. I think my biggest let-down is the simple fact that this episode has been hyped as being all about Michael at a DIWALI celebration when in fact the actual party scenes were too few and far between. What did he really DO? Ok, he came in his Halloween costume, somehow (?) mistook "simosas" for "s'mores," askes one SORT OF inapropriate question to the Kapoors, and had fun dancing. Oh, and he also humiliated himself with Carole. But still... I certainly didn't find myself squirming at his behavior (except for that kiss/lean-in thing... brr!).I think this episode was striving to be like "The Christmas Party" or "The Booze Cruise," where the entire cast is placed inside a situation and we see their interactions with that situation as a backdrop. Part of why this episode perhaps didn't work as well as those other episodes is the simple fact that we kept breaking away from the party to go to Stamford-- we kept leaving that "bubble" and shifting over to another plot that wasn't really all that interesting (and leads to other strange questions, like "did Karen do this whole thing to have her way with Jim?" :) ).I know we are only a few weeks away from having Jim back in Scranton, so hopefully these kinds of things will work themselves out in the PS (post Stamford) era.The "outro" where Michael and Dwight performed a Diwali version of Adam Sandler's "The Chanukah Song" was also kind of funny, but really didn't seem to have a place in the actual world this episode took place in... it played more like an appreciative group of citizens applauding Steve Carell. Ah well... as I said, this is based on only one viewing... I'm sure I will find my opinion softening with repeated viewings. And Martin-- I'll take your challenge.

Curse you NBC! Oct 30, 2006

Dagnabbit...So we record episode five, and play the deleted scenes for THE INITIATION... THEN NBC comes out with 5 MORE deleted scenes, which we cover on episode #5.5... NOW NBC has posted yet ANOTHER deleted scene. ARG.Curse you, you peacock loving bastiches!Edit:Maybe I'm going crazy, but I also just noticed that NBC has uploaded TWO (1, 2) new deleted scenes from GRIEF COUNSELING that we never mentioned or analyzed on the podcast. The first one gives us more Pam & Roy interaction, and the second shows Jan & Michael on the phone talking about Ed dying ("Does his family know?").NBC... you guys are killin' me here.

    Episode # 5.5 -- The Rerun (10/26/06) Oct 30, 2006
    Show notes

Episode #5.5 of THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID finds both Matt and Ian lost in a sea of confusion... if a show airs no new episode, is there anyone around to hear the podcast? It's rerun day here folks, but we've still got a good handful of tidbits to dissect, news to go through, and e-mails to ridicule. From Jim's iPod this week, Jonathan Coulton with "Code Monkey"... The Kelly Kapoor Story Hour Oct 26, 2006
Show notes IndiaWest (North American's Most Honored Weekly Newspaper, according to their website) posted an article today which looked at the November 2nd episode of THE OFFICE, "Diwali."To quote from Wikipedia, Diwali is:"a major Hindu festival that is also very significant in Sikhism and Jainism. Known as the "Festival of Lights," it symbolises the victory of good over evil, and lamps are lit as a sign of celebration and hope for mankind. Celebrations focus on lights and lamps, particularly traditional diyas (as illustrated). Fireworks are associated with the festival in many regions of India. Diwali is celebrated for five consecutive days at the end of Hindu month of Ashwayuja. It usually occurs in October/November, and is one of the most popular and eagerly awaited festivals in India. Diwali comes exactly twenty days after Dussehra. Hindus, Jains and Sikhs alike regard it as a celebration of life and use the occasion to strengthen family and social relationships. For Jains it is one of the most important festivals, and beginning of the Jain year. Jains celebrate Diwali to mark the time when Lord Mahavira achieved Moksha. It is also a significant festival for the Sikh faith."IndiaWest also interviewed Mindy Kaling (aka Chokalingam) about the show. She said that Greg Daniels was "thrilled" at the idea of focusing an episode on the holiday because it was a completely fresh concept that had never been done on American TV before, and also mentioned that her real life parents are going to be playing Mr. & Mrs. Kapoor on the episode. "My mom and dad were thrilled and adorably nervous to be playing the Kapoors, who are much more traditional Indian parents than [mine] are," Kaling told IndiaWest. "They also play a couple that had an arranged marriage, which was not the case for my parents. So that was a little bit of 'acting' for them.""The comedy potential of Michael Scott in a Hindu festival, surrounded by Indian Americans and committing faux pas, seemed too delicious to pass up, anyone could see that... It reminded me of Peter Sellers and 'The Party,' one of my dad's favorite movies."

Big News From Brian's Blog Oct 25, 2006
    Show notes

So Brian "Kevin" Baumgartner gave some big news on his myspace blog today.#1) November 16th's episode of THE OFFICE will be yet another 40 minute super-sized episode. Tasty! As we've seen, the episodes ALWAYS run long, so I am really happy for another "Casino Night" sized ep... This episode, of course, must be fallout from November 9th's "Branch Closing"... so I'm guessing this is when we'll see Jim (and Karen?) being relocated back to Scranton.#2) Starting November 30th, DEAL OR NO DEAL will no longer be airing on Thursdays. Instead, NBC will go back to the good old fashioned "Must See TV" all sitcom line-up! From then on, we'll get Earl, The Office, Scrubs and 30 Rock... capped off with the 27th season of ER. Based on the news from last week, this is sort of interesting... glad to see NBC is giving 30 Rock another chance (I thought the first episode was pretty funny, although I missed the last one... or two?).Not too shabby.

More Deleted Scenes from "The Initiation" Oct 25, 2006
    Show notes

In case anyone else missed the news from the comments area, NBC has posted several new deleted scenes from "The Initiation."Ah, Stanley, I *knew* you had it in you... you just made it to the podcast sound clip library! Congrats, big man.Speaking of which... can the members of TWSS/DAC give me a hand in finding ALL the "That's What She Said" clips that have ever been uttered during the three seasons of "The Office"? Episode number & time would be greatly appreciated... I'm toying with the idea of putting them all together into a big sound clip for use in promotional materials. Thanks for any assistance!
