S2 E22: Max Headroom & The Mystery Soda Machine Feb 28, 2022

It was Sunday night November 22, 1987 during a typical Chicago Bears highlights show when suddenly the broadcast signal was disrupted...the screen went black...and then a strange figure appeared on viewers television screens.
There was hardly any sound, but the image was still frightening. The figure bobbed around in front of a spinning background as a buzzing noise played. Dressed in a rubber mask and wearing sunglasses, the mysterious intruder looked like TV character Max Headroom.
The screen scrambled and the broadcast signal returned - leaving a stunned Dan Roan looking dumfounded on screen.
But this was just the beginning...

Meanwhile on the other side of the United States - a mysterious soda machine began to baffle Seattle residents. Although initially it looked much like most soda machines, it had a single button that simply read "mystery".
Thirsty customers who were brave enough to press the "mystery" button were both surprised and delighted at the resulting rare flavors of soda that dropped down.
Over time every button of the machine turned into "mystery" buttons...all of them dispensing sodas unavailable or not sold in the US market.
Despite its ever growing popularity - no one has ever seen who stocks the machine...and then a few years ago it disappeared completely.
A note was left in it's place that read "went for a walk...need to find myself".

No matter where you grew up - chances are there were a handful of urban legends and mysteries that surrounded your town.
Maybe it was an old abandoned house, a condemned factory, or perhaps even a haunted road…

With origins often steeped in tragedy, shrouded in mystery, and terribly fascinating - these stories end up becoming staples of teenage conversations.
Their physical locations even becoming a part of our cultural coming of age traditions.

Our super rad friend and listener Brendan* sent us his own local legend from Tasmania.

101 years ago almost to the exact date this episode is released: 13 yo Chrissie Venn left her family’s home and walked along Allison Road to run some errands in the village of North Motton, Tasmania.
She never returned.
What begins as a journey into the mysterious disappearance, tragic murder, and the bizarre way she was found…ends with talks of secret societies, strange portals hidden in forests, and the disembodied voices you MUST ALWAYS ignore.

Not only did Brendan turn us on to this incredible story - he ALSO recorded his very own experience while exploring the haunted Allison Road for all of us to enjoy.

Yes, we know it’s actually Valentines Day today - so, Happy Valentines Day!
We thought we’d mix it up a little this year and instead of talking about flower bouquets and chalky candy hearts with tiny messages on them…we’re going to chat about one of our all-time favorite Bill Murray movies: Groundhog Day.

This week we dive into the genius of Harold Ramis, our huge crush on Andie MacDowell, the odd but hilarious Chris Elliott, and of course the unstoppable Bill Murray.
This movies concept of being stuck in a time-loop was probably the beginning of the broadening of our minds as kids to ideas and thought experiments such as this.
What would you do if you were stuck in the same day... over and over?
Anything you want and everything your heart desires.
Like so many of our shows, although we start out talking about an early ‘90s movie - we end up going down a few rabbit trails that we’re sure you’ll enjoy.

S2 E19: Spring-Heeled Jack Feb 07, 2022

Well before the streets of London were terrorized by the murderous "Jack the Ripper"...or even before the criminals of Gotham City were terrified of a winged figure lurking in the shadows...there existed a creature/being/assailant called - "SPRING-HEELED JACK".

The 1837 dimly lit cobble stone streets of Victorian England would have been spooky enough but, when women began being attacked at night by a mysterious shape-shifting figure, ghostly in appearance, and with gloves in the shape of claws - a panic swept the country.

With reports of Spring-Heeled Jack being able to breath blue flames, leap over 9ft walls with no issue, and the ability to never be caught - it's hard for us to not immediately picture a steampunk Batman-like figure who was way to "handsy" making his way through London.
How did these sightings/attacks happen over the span of so many years?
Was it just one person who was some sort of deranged inventor getting his kicks by terrorizing others?
Was it some sort of dark, secret society whose initiation involved some sort of terroristic outing?
Or was it a group of copy cats who kept this legend alive as recent as 2009?

S2 E18: The Mad Gasser of Mattoon Jan 31, 2022

It was 1944...anxiety was at an all time high in most of the United States as World War II raged overseas.

Rumors of spies and sleeper cells whispered across small towns. So many households were left with mothers caring for their children and simultaneously working to do their part for their family or the war effort, or sometimes both.

In late August, 1944 in the small industrial Illinois town of Mattoon...the town came face to face with terror in their own tiny neighborhoods.

A strange figure lurking in the dark - peering through windows late at night, wearing dark clothes, a strange mask or hat, and presumably gassing victims - one house at a time.

Townspeople reported strange odors permeating through their homes - causing symptoms such as paralysis, nausea, weakness, disorientation, coughing, and sometimes loss of consciousness.
With most of the men fighting courageously across the sea, the women were left vulnerable, and alone.
The perfect scenario for a deranged, yet potentially brilliant mind.
Who was this Phantom Anesthetist?
Who was this Anesthetic Prowler?
Why did the attacks subside after more than 2 dozen households affected by the strange gas?

It's a bird, it's a plane, wait...my neighbor burst into flames??

As if we didn't have enough to worry about in the world - why not add the strange and mysterious phenomenon of spontaneous human combustion to the list.

On this week's show we explore Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC), a phenomenon that is well documented throughout history - dating back as far as the 17th Century.

It is the strange and mysterious occurrence where a human body ignites and burns without any known contact with an external source of fire.

In some cases the victim only suffers slight damage. In others they are reduced to ashes.

But, in the strangest of cases - nearby objects somehow escape unscathed...the chair or bed the victim was lying or sitting on and sometimes even the clothes on the charred body only slightly singed.

Like many mysteries and strange phenomena - many theories and attempted scientific explanations can be found...BUT, like many UNSOLVED mysteries... the true explanation with experimental data to back it up...continues to be undiscovered.

S2 E15: UFOs of the Land Down Under: Part 03 Dec 13, 2021

This week we put the finishing touches on our three-part series about UFOs in Australia by diving deeper into the infamous disappearance of Australian amateur pilot Frederick Valentich.
43 years ago at 6:19 PM local time, Frederick Valentich took off in a rented Cessna 182L from Moorabbin Airport in Victoria. He was en route to King Island, a 130-nautical-mile journey over a body of water known as the Bass Strait. Although the strait is famous for its difficult flying conditions - on this night, the skies were clear and the winds calm.
Valentich was eager to make his destination, a flight he had taken before - to score some coveted fresh seafood and relax with friends.
Sadly, he would never make it to his destination.
Mere minutes after take off his trip was interrupted by a strange Unidentified Flying Object which he called into air traffic control to report...the exchange transcript becomes more and more eery as you read it.
The last paragraph of back and forth reads:

7:12:04 Airtraffic Control "Roger. What are your intentions?"

7:12:09 Valentich: "My intentions are—ah… to go to King Island—Ah, Melbourne, that strange aircraft is hovering on top of me again //open microphone for two seconds// it is hovering and it’s not an aircraft."

7:12:22 Valentich: "Delta Sierra Juliet"

7:12:28 Valentich: "Delta Sierra Juliet—Melbourne"
//open microphone for 17 seconds//
[A very strange pulsed noise is also audible during this transmission.]

To this day no wreckage has ever been recovered and the mysterious disappearance of the young Frederick Valentich remains unsolved.

S2 E14: UFOs of the Land Down Under: Part 02 Dec 06, 2021

This week is part two of our discussion on UFOs and all the crazy things people have seen in the skies of Australia.

We begin our discussion by diving deeper into the story of the Knowles family's encounter and we hop into our theories on what they saw that night in 1988.
That night the Knowles family - a mother and 3 of her sons - were terrorized by what they say was a strange bright light that followed them at high speeds, seemed to be toying with them, and then ultimately lifted + dropped their car off the road.
It left behind a strange dust substance on the top of their car, their minds felt as if they were being squeezed with psychic energy, and reportedly dented the top of their vehicle.

What did the Knowles family see that night back in 1988? Was the family just delirious after driving for 13+ hours straight, less than halfway on their long road trip from Perth to Melbourne, Australia? Did they witness an alien craft that night or perhaps another strange Australian phenomenon sometimes referred to as "the ghost lights of Australia" aka "The Min Min Lights"? Was this some sort of strange story they concocted that night for their 5 minutes of fame?
We also talk about our friends and listeners Matt(man) and Mark who were gracious enough to send us their story about a strange GIANT translucent creature in the skies above Sydney, Australia they witness around 1989/1990.
Over the years the memory of that strange encounter seems to have never faded...
What exactly was it that those two boys saw that day floating and then zooming away above Sydney?
You'll have to listen to find out what we think! One thing is for sure - if Steven Spielburg is looking for a place for a new UFO movie...we know just the place to film it.
