S2 E42: This Is Not a Mothman Episode Aug 15, 2022

This is NOT a Mothman episode...but, we do end up mentioning the Mothman of Point Pleasant, West Virginia quite a bit...
It was hard not to frankly, because this week on our show, we are focusing on two sightings of a "large, dark, headless creature" with "gigantic wings, and fire red eyes" that occurred on the other side of the world with eerie similarity to America's own Mothman.

We're talking about The Blackbird of Chernobyl and The Freiberg Shrieker.
In April of 1986 the worst nuclear disaster the world has ever seen occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant...but, a few days prior the people living and working at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant began seeing a creature, described as a large black, bird like creature or a headless man with a 20 foot wingspan, and red eyes.
Just a few years previous in September of 1978 at a mine in Freiberg, Germany miners who arrived that morning to work were greeted by a strange dark figure blocking the mine's entrance - keeping the workers from entering...moments later an underground explosion inside the mine caused a collapse that would have killed all 50 men.

Are these the only sightings of a Mothman-like creature...the answer is NO.

Our host Tyler has been hinting at telling his own personal ORB STORY nearly every episode since we started this podcast. At last - it's here.

But, what exactly is an orb?
We've all seen the photos online of what people call "orbs", or perhaps even grainy security cam footage of small orb-shaped particles floating around on every ghost hunter television show that has ever existed.
That IS NOT what we are talking about in this episode friends.

We dive into Tyler's personal account of witnessing mysterious orbs of light that would come to visit him at his prior home consistently for a period of several years. Orbs of various size and colors. Sometimes a single floating ball of light...sometimes multiple.
We'll dig deeper into why this is so different from the refractions of light on the lens of a camera, dust particles floating in the draft of an air conditioner, or the simply explained "backscatter" that can occur in photography.

There is a core group of phenomenon that's often used as a universal explanation or place holder, if you like, for some of the otherworldly experiences people have had throughout history.
This core group is more readily accepted by scientists, authorities, and government organizations as "naturally occurring" and easily mistaken for things such as UFOs, paranormal encounters, the orb phenomena, and even globally/culturally significant things like the will o' the wisps.

The fact is - this "core group" is equally as fascinating, mysterious, and strange as the phenomenon they're being used to explain away.

This week on our show, we look up to the skies...
That's right campers - there's no way that we could in good conscious call Camp Rad Strangeness the "best summer camp in any dimension" without diving into some really amazing stories about UFOs!
We kick it off featuring a story by one of our very own campers, Mike, who tells his personal UFO encounter that happened on a warm late afternoon in Westminster, Massachusetts.
His compelling story made us wonder...have there been other incidents in that area?
What we found quite quickly was that Mike was not alone...there have been other incidents...even abductions by the visitors from above.

We'll also dive into one of the raddest and strangest cosmic phenomena that we've heard.
In July 1984, Russian cosmonauts orbiting the Earth aboard their space station Salut 7 experienced an encounter unlike any we have talked about on our show before. This happened not once - but twice, and not just by a single person...but, by six individuals. All of whom reported witnessing the same exact thing.
So, put your binoculars in your backpack, get a fresh water bottle, and let's head down the rabbit trail together this week as we discuss The Salut 7, Space Angels, and Unidentified Flying Objects.

A few weeks ago Woody began reminiscing about old computer games he played in middle school and high school.
In the 90's computer games evolved from the more simplistic (like Oregon Trail) to the more complex (such as Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem 3D, and DOOM).
Even though games had taken a more three dimensional game play - the rise of the "point and click" format took a strong hold.
Like most trips down "memory lane" Woody re-discovered a "point and click" game he hadn't thought about since the late nights he spent playing it at his high school buddy's house back in 1996.
He remembered it being very creepy, very weird, and super intriguing.
It wasn't until he began to dig a little into the game itself that he realized the true story behind the game, and most importantly the game's creator was far more captivating than he had ever known.

Almost one in five people from the United States say that they’ve seen or been in the presence of a ghost.
Belief in ghosts is based on the ancient notion that a human spirit is separable from the body and may maintain its existence after the body’s death. In many societies, funeral rituals are believed to prevent the ghost from haunting the living. So...what are ghosts?
Ghosts are a topic that seemingly we would have covered fully on the show before. Although we have discussed some cases of hauntings, possessed artifacts, etc...we have never really dug into what OUR own thoughts on ghosts are.
After taking last week off to go on roadtrips with our families we thought it would be great to release a SUPER-SIZED episode THIS week.
