S4E160 - Love "Forever Changes" with Michael Cudahy Mar 27, 2021
    Show notes

Returning guest Michael Cudahy (better known by his nom-de-showbiz, "The Millionaire") grew up in New England, and paid his dues with Matador recording artists Christmas and Sub Pop lounge music super-stars Combustible Edison. So how did 60s Los Angeles psychedelic band Love and their 3rd album "Forever Changes" become such a touchstone to his musical soul? We'll let the always-entertaining Cudahy explain it himself, as we dive into Arthur Lee and Co.'s hugely influential take on the darker side of the Summer of Love.

S4E159 - Pixies "Come On Pilgrim" - With Javi Caballero Mar 20, 2021
    Show notes

When this week's guest Javier Caballero first heard the Pixies, he was left much the same way so many others including David Bowie, Thom Yorke and Kurt Cobain were: excited, inspired, and wanting to hear more! On Charles Thompson IV (aka Black Francis) and Co.'s debut, "Come On Pilgrim", nothing much is sacred both musically and lyrically, and the resulting glorious racket sent waves across the alternative rock universe that are still being felt today. But this is where it all began...

S4E158 - Nick Cave "Push The Sky Away" with Chris White Mar 13, 2021
    Show notes

Released in the 30th year of their existence, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' 2013 "Push The Sky Away" is a dark, evocative piece of work that's both unlike anything they have done before and classic Nick Cave. Returning guest Christopher Lee White was instantly drawn into Cave's lush tales of faith, mermaids, "city girls" and late-night internet surfing. It's a sparse-yet-thrilling ride: "And some people say it's just rock and roll Ah but it gets you right down to your soul You've got to just keep on pushing it Push the sky away" We appreciate your support for That Record Got Me High on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/TRGMH

S4E420 - BONUS! - That Record Got This Adolescent High - TRGMH Patrons Mar 10, 2021
    Show notes

For this special Bonus Episode, we asked our Patrons to give us a record that was released and got them high – metaphorically of course – in the year they turned fifteen. Rob & Barry chime-in with their own picks as well because they were teenagers once too - a long, long time ago Become a Patron today! www.Patreon.com/TRGMH

S4E157 - Young Marble Giants "Colossal Youth" - with Michael Bruford Mar 06, 2021
    Show notes

Formed in Cardiff, Wales in 1978, Young Marble Giants released one – and only one – full-length record in 1980: "Colossal Youth" The sparse, quietly minimalist record was a stark contrast to much of the post-punk music being made at the time, and caught the ear of many including this week's guest, Bioscience Professor and music lover Michael Bruford. Highly recommended! "If you think the world is A clutter of existence Falling through the air With minimal resistance You could be right, how would I know? Colossal youth is showing the way to go."

S4E156 - Gang of Four "Entertainment" - with Hugo Burnham Feb 27, 2021
    Show notes

Gang Of Four, "Entertainment!" with Hugo Burnham As influential post-punk records go (its importance has been cited by a diverse array of artists including R.E.M, Rage Against The Machine and Kurt Cobain), you'd be hard pressed to top Gang Of Four's stunning 1979 debut "Entertainment!" In anticipation of Matador Records' "Gang Of Four 77-81" boxset release, we were honored to have original GoF drummer – and occasional curmudgeon – Hugo Burnham on to provide insight into the creation of this monumental album. "Look at the world through your Polaroid glasses Things'll look a whole lot better for the working classes" Support That Record Got Me High on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/TRGMH/

    S4E1757-1804 Bonus Episode "Hamilton" - w/Lauren Arnold Feb 24, 2021
    Show notes

For this bonus episode Rob's niece, SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) student Lauren Arnold, brought us the soundtrack to one of the most popular Broadway Musicals ever: Hamilton by Lin Manuel Miranda. Are Broadway musicals generally in That Record Got Me High Podcast's wheelhouse? No. Did listening to the musical turn Rob and Barry into dedicated Broadway Musical fans? Also, no. Did we have a great time racing through the songs, trying to keep up with Lauren's boundless enthusiasm for all things Hamilton. Yes. Yes we did. S4E155 - Pink Floyd, "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" - w/Roger Clark Miller Feb 20, 2021
    Show notes

Pink Floyd – The Piper at the Gates of Dawn with Roger Miller(Mission of Burma.) As a teen in Ann Arbor, Michigan, this week's guest was already a fan of 13th Floor Elevators' Roger Kynard "Roky" Erickson when he discovered Pink Floyd's first and only record helmed by enigmatic singer/guitarist Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett. This album became an enduring lodestone of sorts for our guest, another Roger who DIDN'T change his name and went on to form a band that has become a lodestone for countless bands that followed. Our guest: Roger Clark Miller of Boston post-punk titans Mission of Burma. His record: Pink Floyd's "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn." "That cat's something I can't explain…"

    S4E154 - Bardo Pond "Dilate" - with Joe Tunis Feb 13, 2021
    Show notes

Bardo Pond – Dilate Longtime Patron and founder of Carbon Records Joe Tunis (noise, improv, heavy, loud rock, and weird music since 1994) brought us a band/record we were not familiar with, but totally got us high: "Dilate" by Philadelphia space rock/psych purveyors Bardo Pond. It's an album filled with slowly developing soundscapes that build and build, mixing equally vast amounts of subtlety and noise to great effect. Highly recommended! S4E153 - The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle - w/Brady Newbill Feb 06, 2021
    Show notes

Bruce Springsteen – The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle Our guest this week, Brady Newbill, was born 12 years after the record he picked was released. He was a late-comer to "The Boss", but when he finally discovered "The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle" by New Jersey's favorite son Bruce Springsteen he was duly smitten. Springsteen would finally hit it big with his next record, "Born to Run", but this sophomore effort finds him leaning into his songwriting skills and discovering his own voice – most often with magnificent results. "Someday we'll look back on this and it will all seem funny." Please support Rob and Barry on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/TRGMH/
