S4BONUS15 - Talking Heads "Speaking in Tongues" with 15 year old Jasper Cash Dunn-Nolan May 31, 2021
    Show notes

In this special bonus episode we sat down with 15 year old Jasper Cash Dunn-Nolan to discuss a record that - while it was released 23 years before he was born - quickly became one of his favorites: "Speaking in Tongues" by Talking Heads. Rob did his best to decode what it is about David Byrne and co.'s quirky, funky gem that grabbed Jasper's attention, and Jasper did his best not to OK-Boomer Rob TOO hard.

S4E170 - Johnny Cash "American Recordings" with Todd Nolan May 29, 2021
    Show notes

When Nashville resident Todd Nolan was working at a South Florida record store in 1994, Johnny Cash was not particularly on his radar. But then a record came in to the shop produced by Rick Rubin on his new "American Recordings" label - Johnny Cash's 81st - and the stark presentation coupled with the heft of JC's voice grabbed him and sent him on a musical train ride of the man and the genre he's still traveling on. Let the train blow the whistle!

S4E169 - Fleetwood Mac "Future Games" with David Lewis (Elizabeth's Records) May 22, 2021
    Show notes

When writer, musician and now record store owner David Lewis first heard Fleetwood Mac's 1971 album "Future Games" (their first with Christine McVie and Bob Welch as official members), he was transported to a place he returned to again and again throughout his life. At once haunting, beautifully melodic and steeped in melancholy, this is the record that first revealed the path towards pop stardom that would eventually make them superstars. Well, SOME of them...

S4E168 - Concrete Blonde "Free" with Diane Ward May 15, 2021
    Show notes

When Nashville singer/songwriter Diane Ward was working at a South Florida record store in the late 80s/early 90s, she discovered a whole new world of music she had previously been oblivious to. One record in particular, 1989's "Free" by Hollywood, CA band Concrete Blonde, had a HUGE influence on her as both a performer and songwriter. Singer Johnette Napolitano's tales of growing up on the seedy streets Los Angeles, along with her fierce-yet-often-vulnerable delivery, inspired Diane - and countless others - to come out of her shell and express who she really is with no apologies. Fierce indeed!

S4E167 - The Boys "Alternative Chartbusters" with David Newton May 08, 2021
    Show notes

When guitarist/producer David Newton (the Mighty Lemon Drops) was a young lad in Wolverhampton UK he would listen to BBC Radio 1 and was exposed to everything from Glam/Glitter to Pop, Soul and everything in-between. At the dawning of British Punk one of the first bands that caught his ear - and one of the first to get a major recording contract - was The Boys. Combining their love of pub rock bands like Dr Feelgood and Eddie & The Hot Rods with NY imports the Ramones, The Boys' second record "Alternative Chartbusters" is an often overlooked tour de force of of power-pop goodness.

    S4E166 - Rush "Hemispheres" with Jill & Rich DeFinis May 01, 2021
    Show notes

Rock-n-Roll couple Jill & Rich DeFinis bonded over many types of music when they first met some 35+ years ago (punk, new wave, metal), but it was their mutual love of Canadian power-prog nice-guys Rush that sealed the deal! 1978's "Hemispheres", with its epic songs about spaceships, mythology and bickering trees was just what their teenage selves needed at the time, and they make the case that in it's own way was just as punk rock as the Ramones. Essential listening...

S4E165 - Adrian Belew "Young Lions" w/ special guest Larry Smith Apr 24, 2021
    Show notes

Singer/Multi-instrumentalist Adrian Belew has played with a multitude of heavy-hitters including Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Talking Heads and of course King Crimson. This week's guest Larry Smith has been a fan forever, but Belew's 1990 solo record "Young Lions" was, for him, the perfect amalgamation of alt-prog and pure pop. Welcome to the jungle!

    S4E164 - The Pogues "Rum, Sodomy & The Lash - w/Dan Sweeney Apr 17, 2021
    Show notes

The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy & the Lash For Barry's final TRGMH Podcast episode we have somewhat of an Irish wake, as we're joined by South Florida Sun Sentinel Deputy Opinion Editor Dan Sweeney to discuss one of his favorites: "Rum, Sodomy & the Lash" by The Pogues. "So come fill up your glasses Of brandy and wine Whatever it costs I will pay So be easy and free When you're drinking with me I'm a man you don't meet every day"

S4E163 - Hüsker Dü "Zen Arcade" - with Ryan Smith Apr 10, 2021
    Show notes

When this week's guest, Ryan Smith (Ryan & Pony, The Melismatics, Soul Asylum) was growing up in Minneapolis/St Paul, Husker Du were considered royalty. With their 1984 double album "Zen Arcade", they transcended their hardcore roots and created a stunning masterpiece that became his - and many others' - "The Wall"...a stone cold classic!

    S4E161 - The Church "Heyday" - With Matthew Kenneth Apr 03, 2021
    Show notes

Australia's new wave/neo-psychedelic band The Church leaned into the dream pop for their 1985 release "Heyday", adding strings and horns to their already heady brand of shimmering indie guitar rock. This week's guest, Milwaukie, Oregon resident Matthew Kenneth, was left "Tantalized" by this record, and although initially hesitant we eventually succumbed to its charms as well.
