WEDNESDAY WISDOM: Reframing — with Nyaling Marenah & Alyshia Ochse Jun 17, 2020
    Show notes

This Wednesday Wisdom is not going to be a monologue but a dialogue (with actress Nyaling Marenah) to help understand, forgive and give rise to a new language and awareness when addressing selection/casting in our industry.

"They went diverse/ethnic..." how many times has this explanation been given for not getting the part?

This podcast exists so we could learn, share, listen and understand the path of another. Today we are going to hear why that statement is hurtful and only doing harm in bringing someone else's value down.

Let's reframe our words and belief system so that we can respect each others value as a storyteller. #sharethemic

S2 010: Jasmine Cephas Jones — Art Is Not Made In Safety Jun 16, 2020
    Show notes

Today I sit down with television and film actress, Broadway star, and singer-songwriter, Jasmine Cephas Jones. Introduced into the world of entertainment by her father, actor Ron Cephas Jones, and her mother, jazz singer Kim Lesley, Jasmine went to school for the performing arts starting in middle school . She spent many years studying voice at LaGuardia High School in New York City as well as throughout her college years at Berklee College of Music.

Today, Jasmine shares the feelings of vulnerability that came soon after where she felt something was missing and was unsure about exactly what kind of career she wanted to pursue. When she realized the missing link she had been searching for was acting, Jasmine immediately committed to studying the craft through experience with the LABrinth Theater Company and training in the Meisner teachings of the Neighborhood Playhouse for Theater. She shares her experiences with the peaks and valleys of the business, from being dropped by an agent, to landing the roles of Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds in the Tony award winning Broadway hit musical, Hamilton. Even after conquering the world of Broadway, Jasmine ventured out to Los Angeles where she reveals she felt as if she was starting from scratch, grinding all over again to prove herself in the business of show business.

While she admits to having moments of wanting to give up, Jasmine shares the mindsets she's carried with her over the years to help keep her moving through those moments of uncertainty. The belief she has in herself has earned her an extensive list of credits including roles on, HBO's "Girls" and "Mrs. Fletcher", as well as roles in films such as "Blindspotting", "The Photograph", "Monsters and Men" and can currently be seen on Quibi's newly released, "#FreeRayShawn". If you're looking for tips, be sure to take notes as Jasmine reveals details about her own process for creating riveting characters that light up the screen.

S2 009: James Badge Dale — Perfect is Boring: Winning with Your Imperfections // Lessons in Long-term Relationships With Yourself, Your Art, and Your Team Jun 09, 2020
    Show notes

Today's guest is a big believer in second chances. You may recognize him as Detective Ray Abruzzo in the brand new Starz's series High Town, or from AMC's Rubicon, or maybe the award-winning mini-series The Pacific. James Badge Dale is an actor who's worked through the high and low levels of this game, turning him into an endlessly interesting, authentic, and raw storyteller.

He's truly an example of how rewarding it is to give your craft those 10, 000 hours and to never give up. This man holds his own working alongside collaborators such as Scorsese, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Jeff Bridges, and Robin Wright to name just a few. You'll hear how he learned to tune into his own instrument, and how he deals with that enigmatic audition room chair.

S2 008: Michael Urie — Why You Should Ask For What You Want Jun 02, 2020
    Show notes

In today's episode, we're chatting with actor, director, producer, and host Michael Urie whose early desire to become a drama teacher carved an unexpected path to his breakout role in ABC's UGLY BETTY. From growing up in Texas, making movies with G.I. Joes, to winning the John Housman Award at Julliard, his journey shows tenacity, trust, and uncanny comedic instinct.

In this episode, he shares the pivotal moments that moved his career forward, moments when he trusted his gut and asked for what he wanted. We chat about his love for theater and New York—how throughout his almost 20 year career (which includes television credits such as YOUNGER, PARTNERS, THE GOOD WIFE, THE GOOD FIGHT, MODERN FAMILY, and the upcoming CBS & WARNER BROS TV sitcom FUN) he's stayed as close to the stage as he possibly can. It was theater that encouraged him to stand bravely in his truth, and it was the smell of hot garbage on 8th Avenue in the summer that told him 'this is where I want to be.'"

Self-taping his way to every role. If you're considering starting your acting career in Atlanta or making a move there this is the episode for you. In this interview we pull back the curtain on the Atlanta market and get specific about what actors can do to get working there.

A die heart Atlantian Estimond has found his career to flourish from roles in studio features like "Get on Up" opposite Octavia Spencer and "Dumb and Dumber To" opposite Jeff Daniels and Jim Carey to major recurring roles on Fox's "The Resident" and AMC's "Lodge 49." WEDNESDAY WISDOM: Investment In Life — with Alyshia Ochse May 20, 2020
    Show notes

"The key to being an actor is to make sure you remember live." - Peter Hall

The privilege of speaking to Rebecca Hall yesterday allowed me to peak into a world in which what you "do" doesn't represent you. Living your life gives breath, perspective and insight into "what you do". Acting is just one facet of what you do in living. Living will infuse so much of your art. Stop waiting to live your life while you wait for your craft to be validated with a result of a certain status as an artist. Live your life so you can redefine (or define) who you are as an artist.

S2 006: Rebcca Hall — Do Good Work, The Rest Will Follow: Tales from a Limitless Artist May 19, 2020
    Show notes

Today's guest has been around the arts her entire life. She is the acclaimed and generously creative British actor, writer, director and producer Rebecca Hall. Many of us first saw her in Christopher Nolan's The Prestige and soon after starring in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Rebecca witnessed early on what an artist's life could be. Her first on screen appearance was in the TV mini-series The Camomile Lawn at the age of 10. It was also around this time that her father (celebrated stage director Peter Hall) gave her some advice: the key to being an actor is making sure that you remember to live! She talks about her time at University and finding success on stage before appearing on screen again. After The Prestige, Rebecca continued on to a truly incredible career that's lead to multiple awards and critical recognition. Her work includes The Red Riding Triology, The Town, Parade's End, Iron Man 3, Transcendence The Awakening, Frost/Nixon, The Gift, Christine, and Tales from the Loop. Later this year you can watch her in Godzilla vs. Kong.

She's a master craftswoman. From sketching actors in the back of her father's stage rehearsals to directing her own projects, you'll hear the stories of how Rebecca pushes beyond expectations to create the art and life that she wants to express. For Rebecca, it all comes back to the work.

WEDNESDAY WISDOM: Caitlin Crosby — with Alyshia Ochse May 13, 2020
    Show notes

Actress, singer, songwriter and entrepreneur Caitlin Crosby knows a thing or two about inspiring others. She began writing songs with Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds in high school and subsequently signed to his label, Arista Records.

Growing up in Hollywood and working in the entertainment industry inspired Caitlin to launch the campaign LoveYourFlawz to support those dealing with body image issues, with the release of debut album "Flawz" in 2009 through Blackledge/Atlantic Records.

While on tour, Caitlin started The Giving Keys which employs those transitioning out of homelessness to make jewelry out of repurposed keys. Each key is engraved with a message like FEARLESS, HOPE, STRENGTH or COURAGE. When the wearer of the key encounters someone else who needs the message - they are encouraged to give it away and share their "pay it forward" story.
