That One Audition with Alyshia Ochse

WEDNESDAY WISDOM: C-Mode May 10, 2023

Show notes

When you get an audition, don't immediately look at the breakdown (the description of the role). Instead, go straight to the script and follow your instincts on how to approach the character. Analyze why the character exists and why the scene is important. Once you have your own take, then look at the breakdown to see if there's anything you need to add. Don't try to give them what you think they want; be true to yourself and your instrument (your unique approach). Approach your audition with curiosity, confidence, calmness, and clarity (C-MODE). Don't just play at an emotion, be curious about why the character is feeling that way. Remember, there's no right or wrong point of view, but having a CLEAR point of view will make you stand out in the selection process. And if you need help, coaching, consulting, or cheerleading, I'm here for you (full C-Mode channeled)!

WEDNESDAY WISDOM: Pending Your Interest May 03, 2023

Show notes

"Pending your interest" is the crucial phrase to remember when considering audition opportunities. Don't just jump at the chance without thinking if you're actually interested in the material, the role, and the people involved. Saying "I have an opportunity" instead of "I have an audition" can also help you approach the experience in a positive light. Remember, if you're not interested, it's okay to say NO. And in the current climate of the writer's strike, it's important to qualify your interest based on where you are in your career and whether you've worked with the casting director before. So, don't be desperate and grab at everything. Be intentional and make informed decisions.

WEDNESDAY WISDOM: Creating On Your Own Apr 12, 2023

Show notes

Alyshia reflects on a recent podcast episode with Kirsten Vangsness, a veteran star of Criminal Minds. They chatted about the challenge of maintaining creativity and curiosity when portraying the same character for an extended period. While consistent work is a dream come true for actors, it can become a snooze-fest creatively at times. To keep their artistic spark alive, the Alyshia urges actors to venture beyond their regular work, whether it's learning new skills or creating quirky characters in their spare time. As a potential writer's strike looms over the industry, it is important to focus on nurturing creativity and to start flexing their imagination muscles now, rather than sitting idle and waiting for their next gig.

KIRSTEN VANGSNESS: Filling the Art Well Versus the Commerce Well Apr 11, 2023

Show notes

For 17 seasons, actor Kirsten Vangsness has been known and loved for her role as Penelope Garcia, the witty and fashionable technical analyst on CBS's hit series "Criminal Minds," now newly reimagined for Paramount+.

From hosting her own YouTube series podcast, to doing theater productions while simultaneously balancing her series regular role, it's easy to wonder when she manages to get any sleep. Rather than viewing it as work, however, Kirsten says she chooses to fill her life with the things she loves and emphasizes the importance of doing the inner work to recognize what those things are.

In today's episode, we get honest about actor mental health, as Kirsten shares her story and reminds us that no matter what level we're at, we can all continue to learn from one another as actors.
