Top Gun: Maverick – Double the Gun Jun 03, 2022

Show notes

We have the need for Tom Cruise. Or at least a Tom Cruise Mission: Impossible movie with a Top Gun soundtrack. That's right, we're reviewing Top Gun: Maverick this week, which is a legacy sequel to the 1986 nostalgia classic. We open the show discussing why it's flying high in terms of box office and critical reviews. Speaking of which, we also talk about Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, a new Disney+ hybrid animation comedy that some are calling the spiritual successor to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? And we finish the show with a barrel roll, diving right into the acclaimed French drama, Happening, which is about a young woman trying to get an abortion in the 1960s. Talk about a triple feature!

Men – Alex Garland's movie about women May 26, 2022

Show notes

Yes, all men. And by that we mean yes, all we talk about in this episode is Men, a new A24 folk horror from Alex Garland, director and writer of Ex Machina and Annihilation. Starring Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear(s), Men has everyone of all genders turning their heads...in the theater to ask the person behind them WTF they're watching. In addition to our review of the film, we discuss some of the general critical reception to the movie, Alex Garland's work leading up to this film, the latest buzz around this year's Cannes Film Festival, and some other flicks hitting theaters and streaming this week. Finally, we finish up the show with some chit chat about Will's first trip to California, Jon's wedding, and some theatrical shenanigans in San Francisco.

On the Count of Three – Best Last Day Ever May 18, 2022

Show notes

Special guest Cory Woodroof fittingly sits in the third chair this week for our review of On the Count of Three, a dark...buddy comedy? No, that's not quite right. But it is an indie dramedy (maybe?) directed by Jerrod Carmichael in his feature debut. He also stars with Christopher Abbot in this Sundance favorite about two friends who decide today will be the last day of their lives. The film also stars Tiffany Haddish, J. B. Smoove, Lavell Crawford, and Henry Winkler.

The first big MCU movie of 2022 is here, and we exist in a universe where we talk about it. After some quick box office catchup, we discuss the highs and lows of recent Marvel movies (and the Disney+ shows) before digging into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a sequel to the 2016 film, but also an "event" Marvel movie with crossover characters like Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and of course Benedict Cumberbatch, directed by the one and only Sam Raimi!

Liam Neeson, Martin Campbell, and Memory May 06, 2022

Show notes

Martin Campbell directed a new movie starring Liam Neeson, and we definitely watched it. Right? Anyway, let's talk about the fascinating career of Liam Neeson post-Taken, then dive into the unpredictable filmography of Martin Campbell, who directed Jon's favorite movie of all time, among...other movies. Finally, we review a movie called...called...oh, it's on the tip of our tongues. Guy Pearce is also in this movie, we're pretty sure.

Summer Movie Preview 2022 – with Dan Murrell! May 02, 2022

Show notes

Special guest Dan Murrell joins us this week for the triumphant return of our Summer Movie Preview! We try our best to predict the box office fortunes (or misfortunes?) of the biggest movies to come, from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder to Jurassic World Dominion and Lightyear. And that new Minions movie. And Nope. And Black Phone and Bullet Train and so many more! We also pinpoint the movies we're most looking forward to and reflect on changing trends in the industry, particularly when it comes to streaming.

For more box office charting and Film/TV reviews, definitely check out Dan's YouTube channel and podcast.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent – Nicolas Cage against the Machine Apr 25, 2022

Show notes

Special guest Clint Worthington—Founder/EIC of The Spool and host of the Travolta/Cage podcast—joins us for the first time, and trust us, we need a Nick Cage expert for this episode. That's right, we're reviewing The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which surprisingly isn't the Will Ashton biopic stuck in development hell. No, this is a high-concept meta comedy action movie starring Nicolas Cage as a fictionalized version of himself(?), as he gets roped into a crime caper alongside Pedro Pascal. Later in the show we also review The Bad Guys, the first original DreamWorks Animation movie to hit theaters since (checks notes) Abominable!

The Northman – Robert Eggers' OG IP Apr 21, 2022

Show notes

We're not just reviewing The Northman, we're reviewing The North, man. That's right, Robert Eggers' is back with an epic viking blockbuster that is sure to blow a lot of minds, mostly in a good way. We discuss Eggers' brief filmography to date (The Witch and The Lighthouse) and debate where The Northman lands in his ongoing saga of twisted machismo fables. Plus we get into some spoilers toward the end of the show and make some predictions regarding the film's expected box office fate. You can also read Will Ashton's written review of The Northman here.

Ambulance and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – Are They Up to Speed? Apr 11, 2022

Show notes

Ambulance, the newest action crime thriller from Michael Bay, isn't a video game movie like Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but it might as well be. We begin this week's show with this runaway GTA-inspired Bayhem heist, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Eiza Gonzáles. Then we spend some quality time with Sonic and the gang in this superpowered sequel to the 2020 box office hit, this time with Idris Elba joining the cast as Knuckles alongside Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, along with James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and a few other familiar(?) faces from the original film.
