Stepping into Discomfort with Spilling La Sopa Podcast Oct 11, 2023
    Show notes

Brenda and Ana Sheila will be back with a new episode next week but this week, enjoy an episode Ana Sheila recorded with the hosts of Spilling La Sopa podcast. Spilling la Sopa hosts Wendy and Rosie take you through conversations about surviving their early 30s, the struggles of growing up between two cultures, familia, and healing through humor. In this conversation, Wendy, Rosie and I talk all about stepping out of your comfort zone - what it is, why to do it, how to do it, the struggle, and of course, the rewards. We hope you walk away with a little more courage to be just a little more bold, a little more atrevida.

More about Spilling la Sopa Podcast.

"Spilling La Sopa is a Spanglish podcast where Dr. Wendy Herrera, a clinical and forensic psychologist, and her amiga, Rosie Ortiz, an I/O psychologist, discuss various mental wellness topics in the Latinx community como intergenerational trauma, the struggles of growing up between two cultures, and navigating dynamics in the familia. Rosie and Dr. Wendy use personal stories and acknowledge humor as a primary coping skill that allows for healing. The name Spilling La Sopa is meant to combine the feeling of "spilling the tea" with some good chisme, and of having a conversation without filter even if it's messy, "sin pelos en la lengua." Creative Liberation with Artivists Julio Salgado & Martha Gonzalez Oct 04, 2023
    Show notes

On this episode we focus on art as a tool for activism. Our artivists guests show us how identity and place influences their work, their critique of the confines of creatives spaces of the past, and how they are each working to make creatives of color have greater opportunities, mentorship, and liberty to create. Before that, we talk about Latina Equal Pay Day and the Latina wealth gap.

We speak to Julio Salgado, the co-founder of DreamersAdrift and the Migrant Storytelling Manager for The Center for Cultural Power. His status as an undocumented, queer artivist has fueled the contents of his visual art, which depict key individuals and moments of the DREAM Act and the migrant rights movement. Undocumented students, organizers and allies across the country have used Salgado’s artwork to call attention to the migrant rights movement. His work has been displayed at the Oakland Museum, SFMOMA and Smithsonian. Learn more about Julio: juliosalgadoart.com

We also speak to Martha Gonzalez, a Chicana artivista (artist/activist) musician, feminist music theorist and Associate Professor in the Intercollegiate Department of Chicana/o Latina/o Studies at Scripps/Claremont College. Born and raised in Boyle Heights Gonzalez is a MacArthur Fellow (2022), Fulbright Garcia Robles (2007-2008), Ford (2012-2013), Woodrow Wilson Fellow (206-2017) and United States Artist Fellow (2020). Her academic interests have been fueled by her own musicianship as a singer/songwriter and percussionist for Grammy Award (2013) winning band Quetzal. Gonzalez along with her partner Quetzal Flores has been instrumental in catalyzing the transnational dialogue between Chicanx/Latinx communities in the U.S and Jarocho communities in Veracruz, Mexico. In the summer of 2017 Gonzalez’s tarima (stomp box) and zapateado dance shoes were acquired by the National Museum of American History and are on permanent display in the One Nation Many Voices exhibit. We discuss the common struggles of adolescence like self-discovery, identity, and acceptance, to explorations of masculinity through a Latino/Latine lens. As the writers' and actors guild strikes continue, supporting Latino and Latine films is more important than ever. We encourage everyone to watch this film and uplift everyone involved.

Re-play: Carmen Rita Wong on Family Secrets Aug 30, 2023
    Show notes

On this re-play of Tamarindo, we speak to Carmen Rita Wong about her memoir, “Why Didn’t You Tell Me?”. She is a former CNBC television host and the founder and CEO of Malecon Productions, LLC, where she develops female-focused media and entertainment. Her memoir is now available on paperback and it’s a fantastic read!

Through our conversation that centers around her memoir, we talk about themes present in many of our family stories, from racism to cultural erasure and the role of family secrets. Carmen talks about how often our adult lives are spent healing, breaking cycles, and reconnecting with ourselves as a result of toxic family upbringings.

We also take a moment to acknowledge and denounce the vile anti-black and anti-indigenous audio leak from L.A city council members and speak to what we hope this moment can bring in the form of activism and healing.
