It’s Ole Miss vs. Everybody as the SEC gauntlet opens Sep 23, 2024
    Show notes

Your No. 6-ranked Ole Miss football Rebels are 4-0 and open SEC play this weekend against Kentucky on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT on ABC.

Ole Miss gave up its first touchdown of the season to Georgia Southern, leaving Georgia as last remaining team in college football that hasn’t. But the Rebels still wrecked the Eagles, the best team they’ve played so far, and again without necessarily playing all that well.

I remember when Hugh Freeze was raising the bar for Ole Miss in the modern era and still struggled with Georgia Southern. These Rebels are different, while Freeze is showing over at Auburn he hasn’t changed a bit.

Ole Miss is superior to Kentucky, but as dominant as the Rebels have been, they still have areas to clean up. The Rebels have figure out the penalties, for example. They entered the weekend 14th in the SEC and racked up the flags and north of 100 yards of penalties against Georgia Southern.

Those are the kind of unforced errors — removing helmets, etc. — that can sink a contender, especially when the sloppiness comes during an 11 a.m. kick. Remember the Jefferson Pilot days? Chaos reigns on game-day mornings.

But in Lane Kiffin Ole Miss trusts. Sure, Freeze changed things. He recruited at a level Ole Miss had never seen before. He took the Ed Orgeron playbook and perfected it. Orgeron dared to ask, ‘Why not Ole Miss?’ Hugh Freeze dared to say, ‘Of course Ole Miss.’

Lane Kiffin is saying: Ole Miss vs. Everybody. It’s the natural next step in the Ole Miss program ascension.

Trending or Ending? Tennessee is being wish-casted into a role Ole Miss is already playing Sep 20, 2024

No. 5 Ole Miss looks for Win No. 4 against a capable, 2-1 Georgia Southern on Saturday at 6:45 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.

The Eagles are the best team Ole Miss has played so far — the first of four Ole Miss storylines I see as either trending or ending with kickoff around the corner.

ENDING is Ole Miss’ preseason concerns about its running back room. TRENDING is Tennessee being wish-casted into the role these Rebels are already playing.

Ole Miss is No. 2 nationally and leads the SEC in explosive plays (20 yards or more). Star wide receiver Tre Harris is tied or first in the country for most receptions of 15-plus yards. He’s got 13.

Ole Miss is one of three teams in the country that hasn’t allowed a touchdown this season. The others are Ohio State and Georgia. Ole Miss has the highest-graded defense (92.8) in football, according to Pro Football Focus. Ole Miss is No. 1 in the nation in defensive rushing efficiency. The Rebels haven’t allowed a touchdown through three games for the first time since 1961.

Tennessee is really good. But the same criticisms Ole Miss is getting — the Rebels haven't played anybody, etc. — aren’t being equally applied to the Volunteers.

I’m just saying, national-media types: Save some of that Tennessee energy for Ole Miss, even though for a lot of you it’s probably really hard, seeing as you tried to bury the Rebels in 2016 and yet here they are, title-chasing not even 10 years later.

Hit That Line: One final tune-up before Ole Miss starts SEC play Sep 19, 2024
    Show notes

The ‘Hit That Line’ crew is back for an all-new edition of ‘The Flagship,’ powered by Homefield Apparel.

Week 4 of the 2024-25 college football season is upon us. No. 5 Ole Miss (3-0) welcomes Georgia Southern (2-1) to Oxford Saturday at 6:45 p.m. CT on the SEC Network. The Eagles could be the best team the Rebels have played so far.

But Ole Miss is rolling, having outscored its first three opponents 168-9. And Rebels vs. Eagles is far from the only intriguing matchup this weekend.

‘Hit That Line’ takes you all the way to kickoff with winners and a few money-line sprinkles.

The Flagship: How NIL and portal mastery turned Ole Miss into a title contender Sep 17, 2024
    Show notes

These aren’t your granddad’s Ole Miss football.

No, the Rebels in 2024-25 are a Top 5 program and staring in the face a berth in the expanded, 12-team College Football Playoff.

Zach Berry has the anatomy of an Ole Miss title contender in an all-new edition of ‘The Flagship,’ powered by College Corner. Ole Miss has played the NIL/transfer portal era almost perfectly over Lane Kiffin’s five seasons as Rebel head coach.

Stock Report: Lee and Perkins on the rise; Ole Miss grounds its Bentley Sep 17, 2024

No. 5 Ole Miss whipped Wake Forest on the road, 40-6, to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Rebels next host Georgia Southern (2-1) on Saturday at 6:45 p.m. CT on SEC Network.

The Eagles’ only loss was a one-point, near-upset of Heisman candidate Ashton Jeanty and Boise State in their season opener. They bounced back with a 20-17 win at Nevada and a 42-14 win over South Carolina State at home last week.

Quarterback JC French has thrown for 776 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions so far this season. Tyler Fromm is a transfer tight end from Auburn and had a 31-yard reception against the Rebels in 2021. He’s one of 14 different players with a reception. Marques Watson-Trent is Georgia Southern’s leading tackler (28). He also has a quarterback hurry and forced fumble.

But that’s about it as far as previewing the Rebels' final non-conference tune-up before SEC play opens with Kentucky. Georgia State may be the best team Ole Miss has played thus far, too.

But today on Talk of Champions is our every-so-often Ole Miss football ‘Stock Report.’ Which Rebels are on the rise? Who’s down?

We’re more encouraged after sluggish Wake ‘cause Ole Miss has never had a defense like this Sep 15, 2024
    Show notes

Feed me us all rat poison after No. 5 Ole Miss clinically dismantled Wake Forest, 40-6, on Saturday.

The Rebels improved to 3-0 and now return home for back-to-back games, including their SEC opener against Kentucky September 28.

We’re more encouraged today on Talk of Champions than we were going into Wake Forest. The Rebels showed they can win ugly. And when their ugly is 40-6? And on the road and against a fellow Power 5 team for the first time this season?

The defense, warts and all, still hasn’t allowed a touchdown, and Ole Miss has played three games. The last time the Rebels did that? All the way back in 1961.

Impressive. Ole Miss is making it look like the 2008 Egg Bowl (ie, Wesley Carroll’s nightmare) every week for opposing quarterbacks.

Ole Miss has never had this caliber of defense at all three levels. The Rebels have an argument for college football’s best team, especially after Kentucky scared Georgia and Quinn Ewers had to exit Texas’ win over UTSA. Does Ohio State have the quarterback play to match the nation’s best skill group?

The Flagship: Ole Miss isn’t favored by enough at Wake Forest Sep 12, 2024
    Show notes

Week 3 of college football is upon us, meaning a return of the ‘Hit That Line’ crew to ‘The Flagship,’ powered by College Corner and the Ole Miss Spirit (OMSpirit.com).

The No. 5-ranked Rebels this week are on the road for the first time in their expectations-filled 2024-25 campaign. Kickoff at Wake Forest on Saturday is set for 5:30 p.m. CT on The CW.

The Demon Deacons (1-1) opened as a 23.5-point underdog against the Rebels (2-0) following their 31-30 loss to Virginia last week. The over/under was first set at 63.5 points.

The Flagship believes the line’s too small, and they have their reasons in providing a full breakdown of Ole Miss-Wake Forest. The crew also previews this weekend’s action.

Let’s pick winners and have us another memorable, money-making Saturday.

The Flagship: Wins and losses starting to matter with recruits? Sep 10, 2024
    Show notes

Zach Berry, the Ole Miss Spirit’s resident Rebel recruiting expert, is back for another edition of ‘The Flagship,’ powered by College Corner.

Berry has the scoop on the game-day visitors for the Rebels’ 52-3 win over Middle Tennessee. Ole Miss improved to 2-0 and has now outscored its opponents 128-3 on the season.

The No. 5-ranked Rebels are facing their first road test of the season this week. They’ll kick off at Wake Forest on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. CT on The CW. The meeting will be just the third all-time between the teams.

Also, is the win-loss column meaning more to Ole Miss’ top recruiting targets these days?
