Sudu’s Spirit Reunion: Ole Miss better equipped to get Georgia this time around Nov 04, 2024
    Show notes

Former Ole Miss Spirit contributor Sudu Upadhyay didn’t give Ole Miss much of a chance going into Georgia this time last year.

He’s changed his tune for this week’s matchup in Oxford.

“Last year I didn’t want to come on the podcast because I thought (Ole Miss) people were going to hate me,” Upadhyay said. “Ole Miss could not match up with them.

“This year? There’s hope. It’s still the No. 2 team in the country coming into town. If Ole Miss pulls off those games against LSU and Kentucky and doesn’t play really stupid football at certain points of the season, I’m sitting here going, ‘I think they can actually do this. I think they’re going pull this off.’ That’s clouded my vision.

“With that being said, if Ole Miss can protect Jaxson Dart, which is a tough task against Georgia, you can attack this secondary. They aren’t what they were a year ago.”

Upadhyay still expects the Bulldogs to win — but only because he’s still waiting on Lane Kiffin to win a marquee game (such as Saturday) as Rebel head coach.

This season’s iteration is far closer to a pick-‘em. Ole Miss didn’t have the trench strength on either side of the ball to hang with the Bulldogs last season and lost by five touchdowns.

The Rebels roll into the weekend with a championship-caliber defense ranked No. 1 nationally in sacks. No. 16 Ole Miss (7-2, 3-2 SEC) hosts No. 2 Georgia (7-1, 5-1) at 2:30 p.m. CT on ABC.

“(Last year) I wanted to say, ‘Guys, we’re going to get our (butts) rocked. It’s going to be ugly,” Upadhyay said. “This year? I can’t say that.”

Upadhyay joins his one-time Spirit teammate, Ben Garrett (OMSpirit.com) in this Monday (November 4, 2024) edition of ‘Talk of Champions,’ powered by RiverLand Roofing.

Former UCLA QB: Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart’s ‘got everything you want’ Nov 04, 2024
    Show notes

Former UCLA quarterback Wayne Cook joins Zach Berry (OMSpirit.com) in this Monday (November 4, 2024) edition of ‘The Flagship,’ powered by Homefield Apparel, to preview Ole Miss-Georgia.

Cook is now the sideline reporter for the Bruins. He gives his thoughts on Jaxson Dart and the Rebel offense, which came alive Saturday in a 63-31 win at Arkansas, the first in Fayetteville for the Rebels since 2008.

ToC After Arkansas: Finally, the Ole Miss offense we’ve been waiting on Nov 02, 2024
    Show notes

No. 19 Ole Miss improved to 7-2 (3-2 SEC) on the season with a 63-31 shellacking of Arkansas (5-4, 3-3) on Saturday. The Rebels claimed just their third win all-time in Fayetteville and first since 2008.

History was made everywhere. Third-year Rebel quarterback Jaxson Dart was 25 for 31 for 515 yards (a single-game school record), six touchdowns and no interceptions. His 562 yards of total offense are a national record.

Dart passed Ole Miss legend Archie Manning, who’d held it for 40 years.

“A really good performance,” Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin said. “Obviously there’s a couple individuals with record-breaking performances, but I thought the team played really well.

“I’d like to single-out (Ole Miss offensive coordinator) Charlie Weis. He’s taken a lot of criticism. I thought he had a great game plan today. You saw guys not just making plays but wide open. A lot of credit to the players and offensive coaches.”

Senior wide receiver Jordan Watkins set new Ole Miss records for receiving yards (254) and receiving touchdowns (5). The Rebel defense had eight sacks and 13 tackles for loss.

Up next is Georgia in a showdown that could determine Ole Miss’ College Football Playoff fate. Ben Garrett (OMSpirit.com) has all bases covered in an all-new, postgame edition of ‘Talk of Champions,’ powered by RiverLand Roofing.

Judd Utermark leading and bringing the boom for Ole Miss baseball Nov 01, 2024
    Show notes

Ole Miss baseball is nearing the end of its fall intrasquad season. One undeniable truth has emerged over weeks and weeks of practices.

    Absolutely nothing is settled.

It’s by design, of course. Ole Miss is coming off back-to-back losing seasons following the 2022 national championship run. The Rebel coaching staff — which now includes a full-time pitching coach for the first time — wants to leave all options on the table.

The depth chart is etched in sand, if there’s even a depth chart at all.

Junior slugger Judd Utermark has certainly thrived in the competitive free-for-all. He’s been one of the Rebels’ top hitters, especially with power, throughout the fall.

Last weekend Utermark was 1 for 3 with a home run, a run scored, two RBI and a stolen base. He went opposite field with a blast that left his bat at 105 miles per hour.

Utermark joins Ben Garrett on this Friday (November 1, 2024) edition of ‘Talk of Champions,’ powered by RiverLand Roofing, to break down his fall so far, the newcomers that have impressed, team-held expectations and much, much more.

Hit That Line: Groundhog Day … again … for Ole Miss football Oct 31, 2024
    Show notes

Another game week, another simple task for No. 19 Ole Miss football.

    Survive and advance.

The Rebels (6-2, 2-2) are off to Arkansas (5-3, 3-2) for a Saturday showdown at 11 a.m. CT. Ole Miss is 2-13 all-time in Fayetteville.

But the Rebels have no choice but to buck history if they hope to keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive.

Zach Berry (OMSpirit.com) and the ‘Hit That Line’ crew have a full breakdown of the matchup and the entire Week 14 slate of college football in this edition of ‘The Flagship,’ powered by College Corner and Homefield Apparel.

Arkansas Week: Will the real Lane Kiffin please stand up? Oct 30, 2024
    Show notes

No. 19 Ole Miss is headed to Arkansas this week — an historically difficult place to play for the Rebels. But they got back on track with a two-score win over Oklahoma and are favored over the rival Razorbacks.

So, why the lowered expectations from Lane Kiffin this week? Kiffin said years ago he came to Ole Miss to be great, not good. Well, 6-2 (2-2 SEC) is, objectively, only good, and the Rebels have issues to go along with their wealth of positives.

Forget the excuse-making and bring back the confidence bordering on arrogance. Ole Miss has bigger fish to fry, including its 11 a.m. CT showdown in Fayetteville on Saturday and broadcast by ESPN.

Time for Kiffin and the Rebels to own their stuff, get after it and and go be great in their last-gasp College Football Playoff push.

The Flagship: What’s REALLY going on with the Ole Miss offense? Oct 29, 2024
    Show notes

Zach Berry (OMSpirit.com) is joined in this Tuesday (October 29, 2024) edition of ‘The Flagship,’ powered by College Corner and Homefield Apparel, by college football analyst Michael Felder.

The Ole Miss offense just hasn’t been the same this season. Felder and Berry try to figure out the root cause of the Rebels’ issues. Up next is a road trip to Arkansas, where Ole Miss has historically struggled. The Rebels are 2-13 all-time there.

No. 19 Ole Miss (6-2, 2-2 SEC) and Arkansas (5-3, 3-2) kick off in Fayetteville Saturday at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN.

Sunny P has bolstered Ole Miss defense's championship bonafides Oct 28, 2024
    Show notes

Ben Garrett (OMSpirit.com) is back inside the RiverLand Roofing Studios for an all-new edition of ‘Talk of Champions’ on this Victory Monday for Ole Miss football.

The No. 19 Rebels are 6-2 (2-2 SEC) on the season following their win over Oklahoma over the weekend. Up next is a road trip to Arkansas (5-3, 3-2). Kickoff on November 2 is set for 11 a.m. CT on ESPN.

Ole Miss was forced to rediscover its tight ends and the middle of the field with Tre Harris sidelined against the Sooners. This Rebel defensive line could also be the best of the modern era.

Actually, the Ole Miss defense as a collective unit showed again its championship bonafides. The Rebels will get another test in Arkansas dual-threat quarterback Taylor Green and star running back Ja’Quinden Jackson.

Jackson is fourth in the SEC in rushing (84.6 yards per game). Green has totaled 2,451 all-purpose yards so far. Oh, and Fayetteville has been a House of Horrors for Ole Miss historically. The Rebels are 2-13 there all-time.

Finally, basketball showed Sunday in an exhibition win over Illinois why anything less than an NCAA Tournament berth is a failure in 2024-25. Malik Dia is one of eight or so Rebels with next-level potential.
