Phoenix Calida Breaks Down The Attack On Trans Women In Sex Worker Sep 22, 2019

Phoenix Calida Breaks Down The Attack On Trans Women In Sex Worker Tamika Spellman talks with D.C. police officers who were responding to a call about a fight between two sex workers late one night in August. Spellman often makes rounds to check up on such women. (J. Lawler Duggan/For The Washington Post)By Samantha Schmidt andMarissa J. LangSeptember 16 With a bag of condoms and a stack of business cards, Tamika Spellman began a route she knew by heart, peering out the window of her Lincoln sedan at dark sidewalks where she once stood. West Virginia Avenue. K Street. Eastern Avenue. Street corners and alleyways where women wait for a steady trickle of clients, for quick cash to pay the rent. Spellman knows these streets, and these women, better than most: She used to be one of them. Now she was on a mission to help them, to help prevent the next black transgender woman from being killed at the fringes of the nation’s capital. “Hey love, you need condoms?” Spellman called out the window. On the passenger side next to her sat Emmelia Talarico, a fellow advocate for sex-worker and transgender rights. It was just past 11 p.m., at West Virginia Avenue in Northeast Washington. A tall, thin woman stood on the sidewalk, wearing a short red skirt and a white tank top. Like most of the women they see on these drives, Spellman and Talarico recognized her. Spellman passed her a card and told her to call if she needed anything. “Try to work with somebody else,” said Spellman, who by day works for the D.C. sex-worker advocacy group HIPS. “I don’t want y’all walking by yourselves. It seems like they’re escalating.” For transgender sex workers in the District, everything seems to be escalating. Threats to safety, police intimidation, rising rents that have pushed so many to take to the streets to survive. Spellman has been going on these drives every weekend since Zoe Spears, a black transgender woman, was shot and killed in June near the Eastern Avenue strip just outside the District, less than three months after another black transgender woman, Ashanti Carmon, was fatally shot blocks away. The deaths became a local paragon of the dangers faced by transgender women of color across the country. At least 18 transgender people nationwide have been fatally shot or killed in 2019, according to the Human Rights Campaign; the American Medical Association has called violence against the transgender community an “epidemic.” [She had turned to sex work to survive. Then she was killed.] But Spears and Carmon had something else in common: Both women had at some point in their lives turned to sex work, a dangerous profession that has over the past year become even riskier — especially for those who are black or brown or trans.

Ethiopian capital eyes ban on sex work, street begging

Begging could soon be banned in Addis Ababa, according to laws under discussion (AFP Photo/MARCO LONGARI)More
Addis Ababa (AFP) - Officials in Ethiopia's capital are weighing bans on sex work and street begging, the latest in a series of measures intended to clean up the country's image, the mayor's office said Thursday. Draft legislation detailing the terms of the bans is still being finalised. But Feven Teshome, press secretary for the Addis Ababa mayor's office, told AFP that it was necessary to combat worsening "social problems" in the city of more than three million people. "We estimate there are over 50,000 beggars and more than 10,000 street prostitutes in Addis Ababa. The draft law aims to eliminate these social problems that also create a bad image for Ethiopia," Feven said. https://news.yahoo.com/ethiopian-capital-eyes-ban-sex-street-begging-144016198.html A Suspected Serial Killer Has Been Linked To The Murders Of Four Women "We have been able to take what we believe is a serial killer off the streets, and had we not done this, we’re pretty sure he would've killed again."
Brynn Anderson / APDave Aronberg, state attorney for Palm Beach County, Florida, at a news conference.
A Florida man believed to be a serial killer linked to the murders of four women has been arrested, officials said Monday. Robert Hayes, 37, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder Sunday in the 2016 death of a woman named Rachel Bey. DNA evidence also linked Hayes to the unsolved murders of Laquetta Gunther, Julie Green, and Iwana Patton, who were all found naked with gunshot wounds to the head in Daytona Beach in 2005 and 2006, authorities said. "We have been able to take what we believe is a serial killer off the streets," said Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw. Campaigners have called for sex work to be decriminalised as a new study finds more people in Britain support sex work law reform than oppose it. It is not illegal for individuals to buy or sell sex from each other in the UK but soliciting and sex workers banding together as a group are illegal. A study by human rights charity RightsInfo found 49 per cent of British people are in favour of decriminalising brothel-keeping – an offence punishable by up to seven years in prison. The poll of 2,000 people, which is the first survey to be conducted on sex-work decriminalisation in four years, found 44 per cent think sex workers should not face prosecution for street solicitation – which amounts to offering their services in public. They can presently be fined up to £500 for a first-time offence. The study is the first to gauge the public’s attitudes towards brothels separately from street prostitution.

By ABC7.com staffUpdated an hour agoLOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Democratic donor Ed Buck, who has been subject to protests and calls for prosecution in the overdose deaths of two men at his West Hollywood home, was arrested Tuesday in connection with a third overdose, police say. Prosecutors are seeking his bail be set at $4 million. A bail motion from the Los Angeles district attorney's office states that Buck is "a violent, dangerous sexual predator. He mainly preys on men made vulnerable by addition and homelessness." According to the documents, Buck personally administered "dangerously large doses of narcotics to his victims" and is "a predator with no regard for human life." Democratic donor Ed Buck appears at a campaign event for a candidate in the California governor's race in Los Angeles on Sept. 22, 2010. Activists have been calling for Buck's arrest, believing him responsible responsible for the deaths of Gemmel Moore, 26, and Timothy Dean, 55. Both black gay men were found in Buck's West Hollywood's apartment less than two years apart. The coroner ruled that both deaths were caused by methamphetamine overdoses. District Attorney Jackie Lacey's office said Tuesday that Buck, 65, has now been charged with operating a drug house and providing meth to a 37-year-old man who overdosed last week. He was charged with one felony count each of battery causing serious injury, administering methamphetamine and maintaining a drug house. Authorities say Buck injected the victim with meth on Sept. 11 at Buck's home in the 1200 block of Laurel Avenue in West Hollywood. The man suffered an overdose but survived. If convicted on all charges, Buck faces a possible maximum sentence of five years and eight months in state prison. Moore's mother has a civil lawsuit for wrongful death pending against Buck, which also names Lacey for failing to prosecute the case.

Another Multiracial Family Falsely Accused of Sex Trafficking While Flying ELIZABETH NOLAN BROWN | 9.10.2019 9:30 AM (Alexey Bychkov/ZUMA Press/Newscom) Lawsuit alleges profiling by Frontier Airlines. In what's becoming a sadly regular occurrence, another multiracial family has been profiled by airline staff as being involved in human trafficking. In this case, 55-year-old Peter DelVecchia, a white man, was traveling with his adopted 12-year-old son, who is black. According to a lawsuit DelVecchia filed in federal court, Frontier Airlines staff accused him of sex trafficking his son and detained the boy in the back of the plane. DelVecchia alleges that the only basis for this confrontation was the fact that he and his son don't have the same skin color. King County considers sex trafficking awareness training for Uber, Lyft drivers A proposed measure that King County Council is considering would create curriculum to teach Uber and Lyft drivers the warning signs of sex trafficking.Author: Ted LandPublished: 11:38 PM PDT September 9, 2019Updated: 6:43 AM PDT September 10, 2019 SEATTLE — The King County Council is considering requiring training for Uber and Lyft drivers on how to spot the signs of sex trafficking. A measure before the council would set up a curriculum for drivers, teaching them warning signs, what to watch out for, and how to offer help to people who might be exploited. “Because victims often don’t own their own cars, they’re dependent on rideshare and taxi services in order to get around,” said Mar Brettmann, executive director of BEST - Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking. Brettmann has trained drivers on this topic and says they often spot passengers in distress, but don't know what to do. “We've done training for the hotel industry, and we saw a dramatic jump in the number of people who were actually identifying victims of human trafficking, and we think the same thing will happen in the rideshare and taxi industry,” Brettmann said.
