Sex Workers Outreach Project USA Welcome to the new and improved SWOP-USA website! We’re going through many changes as an organization and a digital overhaul is part of that. You’ll find an entirely new resource section, our Chapter Hub site has moved here, and we’ll also be producing significantly more resource sheets in the coming months. Sex Workers Outreach Project-USA is a national social justice network dedicated to the fundamental human rights of people involved in the sex trade and their communities, focusing on ending violence and stigma through education and advocacy. Staff Profile: Alexandria LaRue (Chapter Director) What brings you to work at SWOP USA? After spending the last ten years organizing and the last decade working with sex workers, I knew this was the next best step. I realized that the changes I wanted to see for marginalized sex workers meant big moves and I wanted to be somewhere I could make that happen. Staff Profile: Velvet (Managing Director) What brings you to work at SWOP-USA? I’ve been a sex worker for over a decade, and have been organizing for decriminalization for many years. It just makes sense to officially join an organization doing work I have admired for so long. Staff Profile: Phoenix Calida (Communications Director) What brings you to work at SWOP-USA As silly as it sounds? A desire to make the world a better place. The sex worker rights movement hasn’t always been inclusive to non cis folks, non white folks, and other multiply marginalized sex workers. This is the time to move forward with the movement and focus on inclusivity. I want sex workers from a diverse range of backgrounds to feel accepted and welcomed into sex worker rights activism. My goal is help push SWOP into an org that will give sex workers a feeling of safety and security.

Michigan man’s alleged fatal hit-and-runs targeted female sex workers Updated May 20, 2020; Posted May 20, 2020By Justine Lofton | jlofton@mlive.com DETROIT – A Garden City man is suspected in the hit-and-run deaths of two women and the non-fatal hit-and-runs of two other women. Two of the victims were pregnant. Lawrence Paul Mills III, 32, is believed to have targeted Caucasian sex workers on the southside of Detroit, Detroit police Chief James Craig said during a news conference. A 3-year investigation led police to believe he would approach his victims for a paid sex encounter and engage in the act inside his vehicle. When the victim left the vehicle, he would strike them with it and then reclaim his payment for the act. Detroit Police Chief James Craig briefing on the arrest of suspect related to multiple fatal and non-fatal assaults Posted by Detroit Police Department on Friday, May 15, 2020 Police believe there may be other victims and have asked them to come forward. They are already investigating a possible fifth case that could be tied to Mills. Mills was arraigned on Friday, May 15, in connection to a Dec. 22, 2017, incident in which he is accused of intentionally striking a then-pregnant woman with a vehicle several times before driving away, according to a news release from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. The woman and her unborn child survived. RELATED: Michigan man accused of intentional hit-and-runs of 3 women; 2 were pregnant That was the fourth incident – all in 2017 – in which Mills is suspected. The possible fifth incident occurred in 2018, Craig said. The first nonfatal incident took place March 17, 2017 around 4 a.m. It involved a 48-year-old white female victim. The first fatal alleged hit-and-run occurred around 3 a.m. on Oct. 16, 2017. The 34-year-old white female victim was pregnant, and she and her unborn child died at the scene, according to the prosecutor’s office. The next incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Dec. 13, 2017, when the suspect allegedly purposely hit and killed a 59-year-old white female with a vehicle. The last known incident that is allegedly connected to Mills occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 22, 2017. Mills allegedly stuck a 28-year-old pregnant Hispanic woman with a vehicle several times before driving away; she and her unborn child survived the incident. The victim fled the scene on foot and called police. She was then rushed to a hospital. After years of investigation, Mills was taken into custody on April 24, authorities said. He has been arraigned and charged in connection to three of the cases. In Dec. 22 case, Mills is charged with assault with intent to murder and knowing assault/assault and battery of a pregnant person. In the Oct. 16 case of the 34-year-old woman and her unborn child who both died, Mills is charged with first degree murder and assault on a pregnant individual causing miscarriage or stillbirth. Mills is charged with first degree murder in the death of the 59-year-old woman. Mills allegedly used the same vehicle — a 2006 golden tan Chevy Trailblazer — in each of the 2017 incidents. Police are investigating a possible fifth victim of a 2018 incident in which they believe Mills used a dark-colored Chevy Cobalt, Craig said. Police believe there could be even more victims. “We want to make sure the sex worker community that we’re here to seek justice for you and your family so please, please step forward,” Craig said.

Phoenix Calida Breaks Down Incel Terrorism May 21, 2020

THE FULL EPISODE IS PATREON EARLY ACCESS FOR THE FIRST TWO DAYS AND THEN IT WILL GO TO THIS SOCIALIZED FEED PATREON.COM/WINECELLARMEDIAFUND Deadly attack at Toronto erotic spa was incel terrorism, police allege A deadly attack at a Toronto erotic massage parlour three months ago is now being treated as an act of terrorism after police allegedly uncovered evidence it was inspired by misogynist incel ideology. Charges against the suspect accused of carrying out the Feb. 24 stabbing attack, which killed a woman and injured another, were updated in court on Tuesday to “murder — terrorist activity.” The suspect, who cannot be named because he is a minor, was also charged with terrorism for the alleged attempted murder of the woman who survived. He was already facing first-degree and attempted murder charges, but the development means police believe the incident was terrorism-related. In a joint statement, the RCMP and Toronto Police Service said their investigation had determined the attack “was inspired by the Ideologically Motivated Violent Extremist (IMVE) movement commonly known as INCEL.” “As a result, federal and provincial Attorney Generals have consented to commence terrorism proceedings, alleging that the murder was terrorist activity … and the attempted murder was terrorist activity.” Experts said it was the first time a terrorism charge had been laid over violence tied to incels, a term that refers to self-described “involuntary celibates.”

SWOPcast - Phoenix Calida Breaks Down A SESTA FOSTA Study And Article Jan 30, 2020
    Show notes

Hacking//Hustling (Fair Use) Ana Valens Ana Valens— 2020-01-26 06:00 am Two years after SESTA-FOSTA became law, a sex worker-led research initiative has confirmed that the “anti-sex trafficking” law actually renders sex workers “more vulnerable to human trafficking and exploitation.” The study, released this week, is one of the first to confirm SESTA-FOSTA’s harm through direct correspondence with those affected. Erased: The Impact of FOSTA-SESTA is a 53-page study penned by sex workers’ rights tech collective Hacking//Hustling. The study features two survey groups, online sex workers and street sex workers who have limited technological access, and features self-reported data via a participatory action research model. Cowriters Danielle Blunt and Ariel Wolf authored the study with help from Naomi Lauren of the Western Massachusetts-based survival and street-sex worker advocacy group Whose Corner Is It Anyway. Erased is steered by sex workers and organizers in its entirety. Blunt works as a professional dominatrix and has a master’s degree in public health, Wolf is a researcher and former sex worker who previously worked with the Red Umbrella Project, and Lauren is both an organizer and stripper. The project began while Blunt was working on her master’s, she told the Daily Dot. Simultaneously doing sex work in the post-SESTA-FOSTA world and studying how it impacted her community “really lit a fire under [her] ass” and emphasized why she needed to publish the study’s findings “as quickly and safely as possible,” Blunt said.
