53 - Climate Change and Your Diet with Nil Zacharias Dec 18, 2019
    Show notes

Considering how much information is at our fingertips every day, it seems as though more people should be aware of what really happens in animal agriculture.

Even with knowledge being more accessible than ever, people have to be proactive in educating themselves and researching outside of industry bias.

Today's guest did just that, and transitioned to a plant-based diet after researching how his daily meat products were being manufactured.

Nil Zacharias is the co-founder of the popular site One Green Planet, co-author of Eat for the Planet, host of a podcast by the same name, and the founder of plant-based platforms Spire and 8020 Plants.

After learning the environmental effects of the animal agriculture industry, he made the switch and dedicated himself to helping others do the same.

He joins Dotsie and Alexandra in this episode to talk about his transition to a plant-based diet and why he left his law career to be an ambassador helping people on their own food journey.

Nil believes that many people have yet to make the transition due to errors in communication and understanding, and today he shares his secret to effectively connecting as an advocate.

Tune in to learn more about the environmental consequences of dairy and how you can be part of the solution.

    - The trigger that made Nil transition from a meat-eater to a plant-based diet lover

    - His dairy industry discoveries that opened his eyes to the imposing environmental problems

    - The humble beginnings of Eat For The Planet and how it has now become a movement

    - How to effectively reach out to people by giving them a path

    - Why Nil's idea of success is not based on the amount of people giving up animal products, but by how many people are shifting to a plant-based diet

    - How Spire and 8020Plants can help in a smooth transition for those wanting to switch to a plant-based diet

52 - Carnism vs Veganism with Dr. Melanie Joy Dec 11, 2019
    Show notes

More than 9 billion land animals are raised and killed for consumption every year, just in the United States.

The more people consume meat, the higher the demand, and the more animals are exploited and slaughtered.

But why do we tend to only eat certain kinds of meat? Why are more of us investing in premium pet products at the same time the chicken slaughter rate is continuing to increase?

Today's guest shares some insight into this phenomenon, which she has coined carnism.

Dr. Melanie Joy is a Harvard-educated psychologist, author, and vegan advocate behind the concept of carnism. She's also a TEDx speaker and recipient of the prestigious Ahimsa Award.

Tune in to hear Dr. Melanie Joy as she joins Dotsie and Alexandra to discuss how carnism is woven into the very fabric of our society. She explains that it's both institutionalized and internalized, and held up by our social powerarchy.

Learn how carnism creates a defense mechanism that distorts perception, disconnects us from empathy, and how you can fight against it.

What we discuss in this episode:

    - Why do we love dogs, eat pigs, and wear cows? Dr. Melanie Joy explains what carnism is and how it affects all of us

    - The experience that made Melanie become vegan

    - How people who practice carnism defend themselves

    - Veganism isn't an overnight change: Why awareness is key

    - What Beyond Beliefs teaches us about non-vegans' roles in the solution to ending the consumption of animal products

51 - On a Race to Save the World with Leilani Münter Dec 04, 2019
    Show notes

When women join a male-dominated sport, it can be difficult to gain the respect of fans, officials, and fellow athletes. Those issues can be even more exacerbated when women challenge the sports world to consider new, more ethical ways of living.

But that didn't stop Leilani Münter.

Leilani is a Biology graduate from UC San Diego, a professional race car driver, and an environmental activist.

She realized early in her career that her mission was to bridge the worlds between racing and environmental work.

Despite early criticism, her race cars have carried messages about renewable energy, she has adopted an acre for every race she's run since 2007, and she treated race fans to 30,000 Impossible Burgers at the Chicagoland Speedway.

Today she joins Dotsie and Alexandra to chat about her advocacy for solar power, electric cars, plant-based diets, animal rights, and population control.

You'll hear her story of making the switch, how she brought renewable energy to the race track, and how she's opening up the population dialogue in an upcoming film.

Watch out, because Leilani is as powerful in her arguments as she is on the track. Get ready to be convinced.

What we discuss in this episode:

    - How Leilani used her race career to bring her environmental message to millions and 30,000 Impossible Burgers to her fans

    - The intense physical challenges that come with racing, how Leilani prepared for them, and how going vegan changed her performance

    - How going down the rabbit hole of documentaries like The Cove encouraged Leilani to go vegan, plus how she's changed the way she approaches friends and family about making the switch

    - How a discussion about An Inconvenient Truth helped Leilani realize that her purpose was to bridge the world between racing and environmental activism

    - Leilani's work with Racing Extinction and why educating people about species threatened with extinction help them see the impact of their behavior

    - Striking statistics about population growth, and why we need to start seeing environmental destruction as a symptom of our rate of procreation

    - The two words Leilani uses to ease into the conversation about population with strangers without sending them on the defensive

    - Are we losing the forest for the trees? Leilani shares why she was criticized for promoting the Impossible Whopper, why she stands by her decision, and the statement from Pat O. Brown that puts their animal testing in context

    - How Leilani offset the fuel she was burning during races by adopting and protecting acres of the rainforest, plus how she got an entirely solar-powered pit station
