    Show notes

Paco and George sit down with comedian/artist Kristina Wong to discuss LO AND BEHOLD, REVERIES OF THE CONNECTED WORLD (2016). Along the way we learn about Kristina's practice, rapping in Uganda, trolling Trump on twitter, and our relationship to technology.

Oscar®-nominated documentarian Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, Cave of Forgotten Dreams) chronicles the virtual world from its origins to its outermost reaches, exploring the digital landscape with the same curiosity and imagination he previously trained on earthly destinations. Herzog leads viewers on a journey through a series of provocative conversations that reveal the ways in which the online world has transformed how virtually everything in the real world works - from business to education, space travel to healthcare, and the very heart of how we conduct our personal relationships.

Kristina Wong was recently featured in the New York Times’ Off Color series. She is a performance artist, comedian and writer who has created five solo shows and one ensemble play that have toured across North America and the UK. She’s been a commentator for American Public Media’s Marketplace, PBS, Jezebel, xoJane, Playgirl Magazine, Huffington Post and a guest on Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, Al Jazeera’s “The Stream,” and AM Tonight on Fusion TV. On television, she’s been on General Hospital, Nickelodeon’s “Nicky Ricky Dicky and Dawn,” and Myx TV’s “I’m Asian American and Want Reparations for Yellow Fever.” Her newest solo show “The Wong Street Journal” navigates White Privilege as an Asian American “Mzungu” in East Africa. She has taught at Cal Arts in the MFA Creative Writing Program and twice given the commencement speech at UCLA, her alma mater.

    61 - DETROPIA w Ahmed Bharoocha Jun 12, 2017
    Show notes

On Ep 61 Paco and George sat down with comedian and actor Ahmed Bharoocha to talk about Detropia. It's a match made in Michigan! Detropia is a 2012 documentary film, directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, about the city of Detroit, Michigan. It focuses on the decline of the economy of Detroit due to long-term changes in the automobile industry, and the effects that the decline has had on the city's residents and infrastructure. Conan and Comedy Central veteran Ahmed Bharoocha is half Irish Catholic, half Pakistani-Indian-Burmese-Muslim, and wholly a master of punctuating striking social commentary with high-energy theatrics. During high school his family relocated from Santa Barbara to Rhode Island, where Bharoocha made the leap from Stitches Comedy Club dishwasher to open miker. While attending the University of Rhode Island he frequented Boston’s Comedy Studio, becoming a Comic in Residence in the process. He can be seen on Take My Wife and Dream Corp LLC.

    Show notes

Part 2 of our talk about D Tour (2009), George interviews drummer Pat Spurgeon the subject of the documentary. We learn about Pat's early life as a musician moving from Bloomington to the Bay Area, waiting for organ transplants, and dealing with the medical system while touring in Rogue Wave. This leads to situations like Pat having to perform portable dialysis in the back of a van or the green room of a club. Though it has the shape of a music documentary, it's about dealing with healthcare, mortality, and human generosity.

Jim talks about how his friendship with Pat and the band lead to this film, handling the delicate subject matter, and his background in filmmaking. There are many twists and turns to be revealed, and we follow up on Monday June 5th with the documentary's subject, Pat Spurgeon.

58 - TOWER w Craig Staggs and Steph Swope (Minnow Mountain animation) May 22, 2017
    Show notes

Month of Mayhem True Crime Series continues for our 2 Year Anniversary. On Ep 58 Paco, George and producer Will sit down with the Craig Staggs and Steph Swopes (Minnow Mountain) the animation director and producer of the 2016 documentary Tower. Tower is an animated documentary film directed by Keith Maitland about the 1966 shootings at the University of Texas at Austin. August 1, 1966, was the day our innocence was shattered. A sniper rode the elevator to the top floor of the iconic University of Texas Tower and opened fire, holding the campus hostage for 96 minutes in what was a previously unimaginable event. TOWER combines archival footage with rotoscopic animation of the dramatic day, based entirely on first person testimonies from witnesses, heroes and survivors, in a seamless and suspenseful retelling of the unfolding tragedy. The film highlights the fear, confusion, and visceral realities that changed the lives of those present, and the rest of us, forever - a day when the worst in one man brought out the best in so many others. The film is based on a 2006 Texas Monthly article by Pamela Colloff, "96 Minutes." Maitland originated from New Jersey and attended UT Austin. Maitland read the article in 2006 and asked Colloff to have lunch with him. He suggested making a film about the incident during the meeting. Colloff became one of the executive producers of the film. Early on Maitland realized that he and his team likely would not be able to film reenactments on the University campus and so they decided to opt for an animated aesthetic " to show the geography of the campus". Footage was mostly shot in Maitland's backyard and then animated by production company Minnow Mountain who was aided by pictures Maitland had shot around campus. Craig Staggs is an animator, illustrator, filmmaker and writer. His illustrations have been featured in publications such as The New York Times and the covers of Simon and Schuster’s Star Trek: Starfleet Academy book series. His iconic work on Richard Linklater’s cult classic A Scanner Darkly lead to a successful freelance animation career before founding Minnow Mountain with the goal of developing original feature films, television and web series. He is a Co-Producer/Director of Animation on Tower and the Creator of Earp. After earning a BFA in Photography from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Steph Swope began a diverse career in the visual arts. A veteran of the independent film industry, Steph rose from art department and photo/video research to producing award winning animation and video. She is a Co-Producer/Producer of Animation on Tower and Executive Producer of Earp. http://www.towerdocumentary.com/ http://igg.me/at/murderlake http://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/96-minutes/

    57 - THE THIN BLUE LINE w Vince Mancini May 15, 2017
    Show notes

This episode of Sup Doc is sponsored by GUIDEDOC - http://www.guidedoc.tv/supdoc/ For our 2 year anniversary, we're covering true crime documentaries all throughout our Month Of Mayhem series. Paco and George delve into the iconic Errol Morris documentary The Thin Blue Line (creating the exoneration/investigation genre) with our guest comedian, writer, and FrotCast podcaster Vince Mancini. The Thin Blue Line is the fascinating, controversial true story of the arrest and conviction of Randall Adams for the murder of a Dallas policeman in 1976. Billed as "the first movie mystery to actually solve a murder," the film is credited with overturning the conviction of Randall Dale Adams for the murder of Dallas police officer Robert Wood, a crime for which Adams was sentenced to death. With its use of expressionistic reenactments, interview material and music by Philip Glass, it pioneered a new kind of non-fiction filmmaking. Its style has been copied in countless reality-based television programs and feature films. Terrence Rafferty in The New Yorker has called it "a powerful and thrillingly strange movie. Morris seems to want to bring us to the point at which our apprehension of the real world reaches a pitch of paranoia -- to induce in us the state of mind of a detective whose scrutiny of the evidence has begun to take on the feverish clarity of hallucination." It was voted the best film of 1988 in a Washington Post survey of 250 film critics. Premiere magazine described it as one of the most important and influential movies of the '80s. Vince Mancini is a writer, comedian, and podcaster. A graduate of Columbia’s non-fiction MFA program, his work has appeared on FilmDrunk, the UPROXX network, the Portland Mercury, the East Bay Express, and all over his mom’s refrigerator.
