Episode 114: Jasmine Cannady & JJ Bright Jun 02, 2022
    Show notes

On a seemingly mundane Monday afternoon in February of 2021, a 911 call summoned police to an unassuming two-story brick home in Ambridge, Pennsylvania. On the front porch, officers found 48-year-old Krisinda Bright waiting for them, covered in what she freely admitted was the blood of two of her children: 16-year-old JJ Bright and 22-year-old Jasmine Cannady, both of whom were inside the home, dead from apparent gunshot wounds to the head.
JJ, a transgender boy who socially transitioned at age 12, and Jasmine, who identified as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns, have been consistently misgendered by most media outlets from the start, and JJ has been deadnamed in news articles more times than I can count. In life, they deserved the respect of being referred to by their preferred pronouns and JJ by his chosen name; in death, the very least we can do is remember them with dignity and respect, the way they both deserve.
This is the tragic story of Jasmine Cannady and JJ Bright.

    Episode 113: Kyon Jones May 25, 2022
    Show notes

On May 7, 2021, a helpless seven-week-old infant was reported missing from his mother’s apartment in Washington, DC, but police were alarmed when they learned that baby Kyon Jones had been gone for two days by the time his disappearance was reported. After his mother gave several conflicting statements, both to police and to the public through a Facebook live interview with a local activist, it became clear that Kyon would not be located alive.
This is the story of a baby boy who never stood a chance. It’s also the story of a woman whose problems with drugs, alcohol, domestic violence, and mental illness made her the very last person who should be a parent, but who gave birth to several children, the last of whom was baby Kyon.
This is the frustrating story of Kyon Jones.
Note: I recently told Kyon's story in Patreon-exclusive bonus minisode #7, but in light of recent events surrounding Kyon’s case, I decided to adapt that minisode into a regular podcast episode.

    Episode 112: Moko Rangitoheriri (Part 2) May 11, 2022
    Show notes

In my last episode, I told you the story of three-year-old Moko Rangitoheriri, who was brutally abused for weeks by his caretakers, Tania Shailer and David Haerewa, who were ultimately found guilty in Moko’s death and sentenced to 17 years each in New Zealand prison.
This week, you’ll hear about the killers’ attempt to appeal their sentences; the coroner’s inquest into the circumstances surrounding Moko’s death; and the legacy of change and hope inspired by the little boy with the big, bright smile.
This is part two of the disturbing story of Moko Rangitoheriri.

    Episode 111: Moko Rangitoheriri (Part 1) May 05, 2022
    Show notes

In 2015, single mom of three Nicola Dally-Paki’s oldest child needed to be hospitalized with a severe infection. She couldn’t leave him alone in the hospital, but she had no family nearby to care for her two younger children, aged seven and three. With few options, Nicola asked her longtime friend, Tania Shailer, to care for the kids for a while. She had no idea she was leaving her children in the care of a monster and her equally monstrous partner, David Haerewa.
This is the story of a loving boy with a wide, infectious smile who spent the last weeks of his short life enduring unthinkable torture, pain, and violence. It’s also the story of two child killers whose inadequate charges led to ridiculously light sentences for a crime widely considered one of the worst child killings in New Zealand’s history.
This is part one of the disturbing story of Moko Rangitoheriri.

    Episode 110: Ger'Mya Alexander Apr 27, 2022
    Show notes

On the morning of Wednesday, March 18, 2020, police in Bakersfield, California responded to an apartment on a report of an eight-year-old child not breathing. Although Ger’Mya Alexander was rushed to the hospital, she died of her injuries the same day. Her mother’s boyfriend, 37-year-old Clint Mason, who had been caring for Ger’Mya when she was fatally injured, fled on foot and was apprehended the next morning.
This is the story of a smart, sweet, caring little girl who adored her granny and sometimes got in trouble at school for talking too much. It’s also the story of her unnecessary, brutal death at the hands of a man she should have been able to trust to protect her.
This is the heartbreaking story of Ger’Mya Alexander.

    Episode 109: Tesslynn O'Cull (Part 2) Apr 20, 2022
    Show notes

Last week, I told you the first part of the story of three-year-old Tesslynn O’Cull, whose murder in 1997 became known as the worst case of child abuse in Oregon’s history. After Tesslynn’s battered body was found in a shallow grave, her mother, 21-year-old Stella Kiser, and the woman’s live-in boyfriend, 20-year-old Jesse Compton, were charged with murder.
This week, I’ll tell you the rest of Tesslynn’s story, discussing Stella’s two jury trials, Jesse’s attempts to have his conviction and death sentence overturned, and more about who Tesslynn was. You’ll also hear my conversation with Tesslynn’s maternal uncle, her mother’s twin brother, Billy Kiser, who was the only person who intervened to try to save his niece and who still thinks about her every day.
This is part two of the horrific story of Tesslynn O’Cull.

    Episode 108: Tesslynn O'Cull (Part 1) Apr 13, 2022
    Show notes

On June 17, 1997, police in Springfield, Oregon found the battered, desecrated body of three-year-old Tesslynn O’Cull buried in a shallow grave. The torture perpetrated against Tesslynn by her mother’s boyfriend, 20-year-old Jesse Compton, and knowingly allowed by her mother, 21-year-old Stella Kiser, was cruel beyond belief, and both were immediately charged in Tesslynn’s murder, which became known as the worst case of child abuse in Oregon’s history.
This is the story of a sweet little girl who loved animals, drawing, and her bath toys. It’s also the story of the many failures that led to her brutal and preventable death, highlighting the importance of reporting suspected child abuse.
This is part one of the horrific story of Tesslynn O’Cull.

    Episode 107: Girl Hidden Apr 06, 2022
    Show notes

Jesse René Gibbs spent most of her childhood in small town North Carolina under the thumb of a narcissistic mother who twisted religion to fit her interpretation and gave birth to child after child while utterly failing to care for them. Jesse’s stepfather did nothing to protect his children from his wife’s abuse, often dealing out physical punishments when his wife was unable to do it herself, and during Jesse’s younger years, he also abused his oldest step-daughter in his own horrific way under the guise of love.
This is the story of a young girl forced to carry out her mother’s every whim while expected to raise her own siblings, make money for the family to live on, and keep the family home and farm running smoothly. It’s also the story of a survivor who, against all odds, escaped her childhood torment, made something of herself, and wrote a detailed, deeply moving memoir about her experiences using not only her own memories, but journals, official documents, and letters from her mother herself to flesh out her gut-wrenching life story.
This is the story of Jesse René Gibbs, Girl Hidden.

    Episode 106: Brooklyn & Lorenzo Velasquez (Part 2) Mar 30, 2022
    Show notes

In the last episode, I told you the story of two-year-old Lorenzo Velasquez and his nine-month-old sister, Brooklyn, whose mother, Brittany, left them in a hot car all day while she worked a twelve-hour shift. When she returned home, Brittany found her children dead in the car, and she was charged in their murder, later accepting a plea deal in exchange for a twenty-year prison sentence.
In this episode, you’ll hear my conversation with Brittany’s brother, Vincent Velasquez, who spoke openly and candidly about his younger sister’s mental impairments, his family’s efforts to save her children, and his memories of his tiny nephew and niece.
This is part two of the heartbreaking story of Brooklyn and Lorenzo Velasquez.

    Episode 105: Brooklyn & Lorenzo Velasquez (Part 1) Mar 23, 2022
    Show notes

When first responders arrived at the Velasquez family home in Superior, Arizona on the evening of March 26, 2018, they encountered an unfathomable tragedy. Two young children had been locked into a car for over thirteen hours in the Arizona heat, and by the time help arrived, two-year-old Lorenzo Velasquez and his nine-month-old sister, Brooklyn, lay dead on the floor of their great-grandparents’ home. Immediately, police doubted the story they were given by the children’s mother, 21-year-old Brittany Velasquez, who was quickly arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
This is the story of a pair of young, innocent siblings who were fundamentally failed by both their mentally impaired mother and the state’s child protection system. It’s also the story of a loving, multi-generational family who did everything they could to prevent the tragedy that ultimately befell them.
This is part one of the heartbreaking story of Brooklyn and Lorenzo Velasquez.
