    (Re-Release) - Episode 26: James Biel Oct 31, 2022
    Show notes

*This episode was originally released on August 18, 2020. I am re-releasing it today (10/31/22) in honor of the third anniversary of James's death, which still has not been investigated.*
Illinois mother Kara Witkowski, who joins me on today’s episode, spent months trying to protect her two young children from harm while in the care of their father. Thomas Biel had confessed to raping and abusing Kara and was under investigation for possessing child pornography. His father, Jerry Biel, was being investigated for allegedly molesting Kara’s 3-year-old daughter. Despite months of warnings from Kara, meticulous documentation backing up her claims, and the repeated hospitalization of her toddler son for a prolapsed rectum so severe that even surgery didn’t correct it, a family court judge granted full custody to Thomas Biel.
Soon afterward, Kara’s 2-year-old son, James, died under suspicious circumstances while in the care of his father’s family, but police announced after less than 24 hours, even before an autopsy was performed, that there had been no foul play. Even though an independent second autopsy proved that spinal trauma caused James’s death, there has still been no investigation.
This is a story of corruption and injustice in Kane County, Illinois. This is the infuriating story of James Biel.

Groomed to Die: The Kendzia Children | Part 4: Shannon, Continued Oct 28, 2022
    Show notes

In part three, I told you about the early childhood experiences of Shannon Kendzia, who was chronically ill beginning at the age of two weeks, even though doctors could never determine exactly why. Shannon spent her entire childhood enduring a never-ending series of gastric and other health issues, the symptoms of which – coincidentally or not – closely resemble the signs of frequent use of ipecac syrup.
This week, I’ll pick up where I left off, telling you about Shannon’s continuing illnesses, how her mother Susan’s abuse continued even after Shannon left the home, the professionals who ignored her pleas for help, and the dark path Shannon’s life took once she reached adulthood.
This is part 4: Shannon, Continued.

Groomed to Die: The Kendzia Children | Part 3: Shannon Oct 12, 2022
    Show notes

In the first two episodes of this miniseries, I told you about the deaths of two baby boys who were adopted and died within nine months of each other. I also told you about the subsequent murder trial of their adoptive mother, Susan Kendzia, who was acquitted of Michael’s murder and never tried for Kevin’s.
In this episode, I will tell you about another child who endured years of abuse and torture at Susan’s hands, a chronically ill child whose sickness was never investigated after her baby brothers died even though Munchausen by proxy was brought up at Susan’s trial.
    This is part 3: Shannon.

Groomed to Die: The Kendzia Children | Part 2: The Trial Oct 01, 2022
    Show notes

Last week, I told you the story of Michael and Kevin Kendzia, two baby boys adopted nine months apart by Susan and Tom Kendzia. Michael and Kevin also died nine months apart, each just two months after his adoption, under suspicious circumstances. The death of a second adopted baby in the Kendzia home led to an investigation into both deaths.
In this episode, I’ll go into the aftermath of Michael and Kevin’s deaths; the criminal charges that resulted; the weird relationship between Susan and her defense attorney, Ken Eusner; Susan’s murder trial; and the shocking outcome that allowed Susan to continue her pattern of alleged child abuse, deception, and pure evil for decades to follow.
This is Part 2: The Trial.

Groomed to Die: The Kendzia Children | Part 1: Michael and Kevin Sep 24, 2022
    Show notes

Susan Stevenson. Susan Cook. Susan Kendzia. Susan Lee. All of these names belong to the same woman. You’d never know by looking at this charming, gray-haired 62-year-old southern grandmother that she has spent decades leaving a trail of illness, abuse, and death in her wake. Even though the words “Munchausen syndrome by proxy” have hovered over Susan’s head since the mid-1980s like a dark cloud, she has been permitted to continue committing countless alleged atrocities against children and others for over forty years with little to no consequence.
Over the course of this miniseries, I will expose Susan’s alleged misdeeds with the help of those who were fortunate enough to survive her, and I will speak out for those who weren’t.
In today’s episode, I will tell you about two baby boys who were adopted into the Kendzia home nine months apart and who died under similarly suspicious circumstances, also nine months apart.
This is Part 1: Michael and Kevin.

    Episode 126: Dawson McKinney Sep 14, 2022
    Show notes

On May 11, 2020, a young mother ran to her neighbor’s house with her two-month-old son, saying the baby was vomiting and his breathing was labored. Dawson McKinney was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in Boise, Idaho, and placed on life support, suffering from severe brain injuries. Danielle Radue was taken into custody and charged first with her son’s injury and later with his murder. On May 15, Dawson died in his daddy’s arms.
This is the story of a perfect baby boy with the most incredible head of wild brown hair you’ve ever seen who changed the lives of everyone who was blessed to know him during his two short months on earth. It’s also the story of a mother who to this day refuses to take responsibility for any of her own actions, including the death of her own son.
For this episode, I had the honor of talking to Dawson’s dad, Adam McKinney, who told me all about the special little boy who taught him countless important life lessons.
This is the tragic story of Dawson McKinney.

    Episode 125: Hazel Homan (Part 2) Aug 31, 2022
    Show notes

Last week, I told you the story of three-year-old Hazel Homan, whose brain was fatally injured while she was in the care of her father’s girlfriend, Kamee Dixon. This episode features two special guests. First, you’ll hear my conversation with Stephanie D., the jury foreperson at Kamee’s murder trial, who is the first juror I’ve spoken to on the podcast and who had a very valuable perspective of the case.
Next, you’ll hear from Ashlee Barnes, Hazel’s aunt and the sister of Hazel’s father, Brandon Homan. Ashlee has been the de facto family spokesperson since Hazel’s death, and she told me all about the sweet little girl her family cherishes to this day, whose memory they will never allow to fade.
This is part two of the heartbreaking story of Hazel Homan.

    Episode 124: Hazel Homan (Part 1) Aug 24, 2022
    Show notes

On November 27, 2019, 27-year-old Kamee Dixon called 911, saying her stepdaughter had choked and was unresponsive. Sadly, the damage to three-year-old Hazel Homan’s brain was not survivable. After police found evidence of a pattern of abuse, Kamee was arrested and charged with her murder.
This is the story of how child protection agencies failed a little girl who was removed from her parents’ custody, placed with her grandparents for a year and a half, and returned to her father’s home in June of 2019, only to die five months later. It’s also the story of a precious three-year-old girl with long brown hair, pinchable cheeks, and big brown eyes who loved Baby Shark, chicken nuggets, and playing with her toy ponies.
This is part one of the heartbreaking story of Hazel Homan.
