Succeed in Medicine: Practical Knowledge for Busy Physicians

Was your medical education enough to handle everything physician life demands? From lawsuits to leadership, career decisions to challenging conversations, balancing the personal with the professional — not enough was addressed in medical school, residency or fellowship.
This medical podcast fills those gaps so you can live up to the expectations that come with the white coat — not just in the exam room, but in all the places your MD follows you. This show is the physician mentor you didn’t realize you needed.
Your host, Dr. Bradley Block, a private practice ENT, is right there with you — navigating the same challenges and bringing in world-class guests to teach, as he puts it, “everything we should have been learning while we were memorizing Kreb’s cycle.” With nearly 500 episodes and close to half a million downloads, Brad has built a trusted space where physicians come for brass-tacks, immediately-applicable advice.
You don’t need another certification. You need a medical podcast that can be your physician mentor. It covers interpersonal skills, medical education, doctor personal finance, doctor charting, doctor careers, doctor mental health, physician soft skills, physician parenting, physician executive skills, medical decision making, medical professional development, physician side gigs, main gigs, reacting to bad reviews, misinformation, social media, negotiating and what to do when someone yells, “Is there a doctor on board?”
Guests have included Lady Glaucomflecken Kristen Flanary, Matt Abrahams, PhD, Gita Pensa, MD, Nneka Unachukwu, MD, (Dr. Una) Amy Fogelman, MD, and Bapu Jena, MD, PhD.
A proud founding member of the Doctor Podcast Network!

Climate Change and Medicine: How to Prepare with Caitlin Rublee, MD, MPH Feb 01, 2023
    Show notes

Caitlin Rublee, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado. She serves as Director of Graduate Medical Education with the Climate and Health Program through the School of Medicine and Assistant Fellowship Director for the Climate and Health Science Policy Fellowship. So what you think we’ll be talking about today. That’s right. Climate change and its impact on the practice of medicine.

We talk about what she is hoarding in her bunker with the coming societal collapse from climate change. Actually, she is a lot more hopeful than me, which is clearly reflected in our discussion, so we talk about what gives her hope. That being said, we need to be prepared, so we talk about what she should expect, like more mosquito borne illnesses, climate refugees, more issues with supply chains causing us to practice with scarcity. We also talk about why climate change is a social justice issue and what we can do if this conversation terrifies or inspires you. Probably a bit of both.

She is the 2022-2024 American Board of Emergency Medicine National Academy of Medicine Fellow. Dr. Rublee received a MD/MPH dual degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She completed residency in Emergency Medicine at The Ohio State University followed by a one-year Climate and Health Science Policy Fellowship at the University of Colorado.

Get Discovered by Lawyers for Medical Expert Witness Work with Beryl Vaughan Jan 18, 2023
    Show notes

Beryl Vaughan is a consultant in Practice Development, Marketing and Business Consulting for physicians in the medicolegal space as expert witnesses or who conduct evaluations with legal application. She has worked for 15 years in this field with Forensic Psychiatrists, Psychologists and, for the past 5 years, physicians in other medical specialties. She was a case manager and paralegal for 2 decades prior to turning her attention to medical expert witness practice. She has educated Forensic Psychiatry Fellows at UC Davis, UCSF, and UCLA for the past 3 years.

We talk about how to help attorneys find you. Should we be advertising if we want to get into medical expert witness work? Does soliciting for this type of work make us impeachable? How can we put ourselves out there so lawyers can find us? Aside from lists, should we have a website? What should be on that website? How can we optimize it so we show up in lawyer’s searches? How do we make sure we are identifiable on Linkedin? And why aren’t lawyers DMing me on Twitter?

Disrupt Outpatient Healthcare with Direct Primary Care with Dr Maryal Concepcion Jan 04, 2023
    Show notes

What the heck is direct primary care? Or direct care since other specialties are adopting this model. It is a subscription service that gives you access to your doctor whenever you want it. It is disruptive! Sometimes. So we talk to Dr. Maryal Concepcion about her practice, her podcast, why she chose to stop billing insurance companies and give patients access to her 24/7. We also talk about what happens when a patient abuses this service, which patients tend to be interested, and why earlier that day, a weekday, she wasn’t even in the office!

Dr. Concepcion is the host of MY DPC Story, where she interviews physicians on their direct care, not always primary care, journey. She went to Creighton Med School, completed Velley Family Medicine residency in Modesto, CA, and then moved to rural Northern California. She started working in the corporate model before starting her direct primary care practice, for which she is clearly an evangelist.
