    Show notes

Few people are more closely associated with the spirit and optimism of early MTV than Martha Quinn. As one of the original faces of MTV, Quinn helped introduce an entire generation to the music, artists and videos that defined the 1980s. Decades later, she remains one of the most beloved ambassadors of the era through her work in radio and nostalgic pop-culture programming. This week on the Stuck in the ’80s Podcast, Spearsy finally gets the chance to sit down with Martha for a long-awaited interview covering music, radio and the enduring emotional pull of the MTV generation.

During the conversation, Martha reflects on her transition from MTV icon to radio personality and discusses her ongoing work celebrating the music of the 1980s for modern audiences. Spearsy and Martha explore how nostalgia culture has evolved over the years and why Gen X fans continue connecting so deeply with the music and memories of the decade.

The interview also dives into one of Martha’s favorite subjects: Journey. The two discuss the band’s lasting popularity, the emotional connection fans still have with songs like Don't Stop Believin' and the complicated history surrounding former frontman Steve Perry. Along the way, the conversation touches on reunion rumors, fan hopes and why Journey’s music continues resonating across multiple generations.

Spearsy and Martha also talk about the future of ’80s-focused media, including SiriusXM’s “’80s on 8” and the broader world of nostalgia entertainment. The discussion becomes a thoughtful reflection on how the music, videos and personalities of the MTV era still provide comfort, connection and community decades after their original cultural moment.

If you love MTV history, classic rock, ’80s radio and conversations with one of the most iconic personalities of the music-video generation, this episode belongs in your playlist.

Martha Quinn on MTV, Journey and the Future of ’80s Nostalgia Apr 30, 2017

The story of Berlin is one of reinvention, persistence and surviving the chaos of the music industry during one of the wildest decades in pop culture history. In Part Two of Spearsy’s conversation with Terri Nunn, the discussion turns toward the band’s earliest years, the highs and lows of MTV-era fame and the complicated relationships that shaped Berlin’s legacy.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s Podcast, Terri reflects on the difficult beginnings of Berlin and the challenge of carving out a unique sound during the explosion of new wave and synth-pop in the early 1980s. Spearsy and Terri discuss the band’s rise through the Los Angeles music scene and how Berlin evolved into one of the defining acts of the MTV generation with songs like The Metro and No More Words.

The conversation also revisits the legendary US Festival, one of the most ambitious music events of the decade and a defining moment for many artists from the MTV era. Terri shares stories about performing during a time when large-scale concerts were becoming cultural spectacles that blended music, technology and pure ’80s excess.

Along the way, Spearsy and Terri discuss her acting career and the strange crossover between music videos, Hollywood and celebrity culture during the 1980s. Like many musicians of the era, Terri found herself navigating opportunities beyond music as MTV transformed performers into multimedia personalities.

The interview also touches on Terri’s eventual reunion with bassist John Crawford and the emotional complexities of reconnecting creatively after years of change, success and personal growth. The conversation offers an honest and often funny look at the realities of surviving decades in the music business while maintaining artistic passion.

If you love new wave, synth-pop, MTV history and behind-the-scenes stories from one of the defining bands of the 1980s, this episode belongs in your playlist.
