Paul Dean of Loverboy on Arena Rock and The 80s Cruise Jul 30, 2017
    Show notes

Few bands captured the loud, energetic spirit of early 1980s arena rock quite like Loverboy. With massive choruses, guitar-driven hooks and anthems built for car stereos and packed arenas, the band became one of the defining rock acts of the MTV era. This week on the Stuck in the ’80s Podcast, Spearsy welcomes Paul Dean for a conversation about the band’s beginnings in Canada, their rise to international fame and the songs that helped soundtrack a generation.

During the interview, Paul reflects on the formation of Loverboy and the band’s climb through the late ’70s and early ’80s rock scene. Spearsy and Paul discuss the creative process behind classic hits like Working for the Weekend, Turn Me Loose and Lovin' Every Minute of It — songs that became staples of FM radio, sports arenas and MTV playlists throughout the decade.

The conversation also explores the larger culture of 1980s rock music, when bands like Loverboy thrived in an era built around live concerts, album-oriented radio and larger-than-life stage performances. Along the way, Paul shares stories about touring, songwriting partnerships and the challenge of maintaining momentum during one of the most competitive periods in mainstream rock history.

Spearsy and Paul also discuss The 80s Cruise and the continuing popularity of live nostalgia events where Gen X fans gather to celebrate the music that shaped their youth. The conversation highlights the emotional staying power of rock songs tied to road trips, summer nights, high-school memories and the excitement of growing up during the MTV generation.

If you love arena rock, classic FM-radio hits, MTV nostalgia and behind-the-scenes stories from one of the defining rock bands of the 1980s, this episode belongs in your playlist.

The Stuck in the ’80s Podcast has spent nearly 20 years celebrating the music, movies, television and pop culture of the greatest decade ever. Support the show on Patreon for bonus episodes, exclusive livestream hangouts, behind-the-scenes content and merch for longtime listeners.

And don’t forget: Spearsy and Brad will once again be part of The 80s Cruise, the ultimate floating celebration of ’80s music and nostalgia.
