It's in the Code Ep 128: “The Porn Fixation” Jan 08, 2025

Show notes

Why are conservative, high-control Christians in America so fixated on pornography? Why do they think it represents an apocalyptic menace, threating to destroy the institution of the family, the church, and society itself? What is it about the subculture of high-control religion that explains this perspective in a time when pornography use is more widespread and mainstream, and less taboo, then it has ever been? Listen in this week as Dan offers his thoughts on these issues.

Burke spent the last five years researching and interviewing internet pornography's opponents and its sympathizers. She does a deep dive into the long history of pornography in America and then turns her gaze on our present society to examine the ways this industry touches on the most intimate parts of American lives. She offers a complete understanding of the major players in the debates around porn's place in society: everyone from sex workers, activists, therapists, religious leaders, and consumers. In doing so, she addresses and debunks the myths that surround porn and porn usage while showing how everything from the way we teach children about sex to the legal protections for what can be published is tied up in the deeply complicated battles over pornography.

SWAJ Rewind: It's In the Code, Ep 30: Who Owns Christmas? Dec 25, 2024

Show notes

Who “owns” Christmas? When Christians tell non-Christians that they need to “remember the reason for the season,” or accuse them of engaging in a “war on Christmas,” do they have a right to do so? Is Christmas “theirs” just because it originated as a Christian religious holiday? In this episode, Dan argues that American Christians made Christmas a mainstream part of American culture, a dimension of general Americana, and that as a result they no longer have a claim on the holiday or the right to dictate to others how it should be observed (or not).
