Why do conservative, high-control Protestants in America emphasize the need for Americans, especially Christians, to have children? How is this consistent with their past positions, and how has it changed over time? How does this relate to conservative Protestant views on the use of contraception, which have always been a mixed bag? And how have changing articulations of these views brough conservative Protestants and conservative Catholics closer together in their respective ideologies of sexual and gender? Listen to this week’s episode as Dan tackles these questions.

In this episode of Straight White American Jesus, we discuss the recent escalation in ICE raids across the country, including arrests at sensitive locations like churches, schools, and hospitals, following the Trump administration’s revocation of the sensitive locations policy. We explore the history and significance of the sanctuary movement, in which churches provided refuge to undocumented immigrants starting in the 1980s, and how these protections are now at risk. To deepen the discussion, we feature the final episode of Sanctuary: On the Border Between Church and State, a seven-part podcast series by Dr. Sergio Gonzalez (Marquette University) and Dr. Lloyd Barba (Amherst College). The series provides a comprehensive history of the sanctuary movement and its implications for today. For those interested in the intersection of immigration, religion, and U.S. policy, this episode is a must-listen.

Why is high-control conservative Christianity so obsessed with the idea of virginity? What “counts as” virginity? How is it “lost” or “given away”? Why are discussions and admonitions concerning virginity so focused on women? How does the concept of virginity serve the interests of high-control religion in policing women’s bodies, their sexuality, and their desires? In the aftermath of the 2024 elections, Democrats are grappling with how to approach religion in a political landscape dominated by a GOP turned Christian nationalist party loyal to Donald Trump. Should they attempt to position themselves as the party of God, or is there a better path forward? In this episode, Sarah Levin, founder of Secular Strategies and a member of the Democratic National Committee’s Interfaith Council, discusses how secular Democrats are collaborating with people of faith to create a truly inclusive big tent. Sarah explores why imitating GOP-style religious politics is a losing strategy and explains how language around morality and shared values can bridge divides between believers and nonbelievers. We dive into the unifying potential of issues like voting rights, democracy, and protecting immigrants, and why the way forward is not about putting God back into the Democratic Party but building a vision of justice and inclusion for all Americans.

It's in the Code Ep 129: “Sex Positive Purity?” Jan 15, 2025

Show notes

Can there be a “sex positive” version of the high-control religious sex and gender ideologies we’ve explored in recent episodes? What about individuals, most notably women, who find tremendous sexual fulfilment within this framework and the institution of marriage it affirms? Do they stand as evidence that critiques of this system are misplaced? And what about the dozens of Christian sex manuals that affirm the aim of both male and female sexual fulfilment and pleasure? Are all of these evidence that there can be a “sex positive purity culture?” Check out this episode to hear Dan’s response to this points, and to hear why he believes a truly sex positive version of this sex and gender ideology is a myth.
