How Storytelling Transforms Your Business with Kindra Hall Oct 06, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode of Start With A Win, Adam introduces President and Chief Storytelling Officer at Steller Collective, Kindra Hall. Steller Collective is a consulting firm “focused on the strategic application of storytelling to today’s communication challenges.” Kindra’s interest in storytelling sparked at a young age during a family vacation road trip after listening to a storytelling tape by the National Storytelling Festival. She reflects how this experience unified her family, despite different age gaps and interests. Since then, she transformed her passion for storytelling into a career.

Kindra explains how storytelling is co-creative, differentiating it from other forms of communication. This co-creative process enables people to create their own versions of relatability, creating a shared experience with the interpersonal connection. She elaborates how this applies in business—people say yes to the story of the products or services rather than its features. Kindra’s book, Stories That Stick: How Storytelling Can Captivate Customers, Influence Audiences, and Transform Your Business, provides insights into why storytelling is an effective business strategy, including a framework for creating compelling stories.

Kindra addresses the #1 common mistake for storytelling in business—people try to convey big concepts, resulting in vague stories. This approach prevents opportunities to connect with others emotionally. Instead of persuasive language, Kindra suggests focusing on one moment. This moment should address a person’s hopes, struggles, or fears, producing a story that reveals a solution people can resonate with and understand. Paying attention to your audience is key. Consider what you want your audience to think, feel, know, or act after engaging with your story. Having clarity of the objective and understanding your audience will guide you into the story you should tell.

The Journey Behind Writing the Start With A Win Book Aug 18, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode of Start With A Win, Adam, and SWAW producer Mark, discuss Adam's first authored book, Start With A Win. Adam shares his inspiration and process for creating the book, referring to the project as a compilation of the SWAW podcast and a reflection of his “why” in business and leadership.

Adam emphasizes the impact of having a firm grasp on understanding yourself, as it determines the effectiveness of your pursuits in business, leadership, and life. He explains how he views life as a series of missions. Everything we do in life is a mission—working towards goals and executing them.

Adam describes how he reflects on every experience to measure and make an intentional effort to make improvements. Consider these questions in your experiences—how is your attitude? What challenges have you overcome? What actions did you take to overcome obstacles? Attitude plays a significant variant in defining the outcomes in all life and business endeavors. It is a matter of choosing between a positive or negative mindset.

Adam reveals the book is divided into two parts, with the first section focused on the reader and the second part delivers tools to succeed. He outlines the topics per chapter:

    • Chapter 1: Attitude
    • Chapter 2: Our Mission Sets the Playbook
    • Chapter 3: Party with the Beast
    • Chapter 4: Be a sponge
    • Chapter 5: Leadership Learnings
    • Chapter 6: From Chaos to Calm
    • Chapter 7: Presence and Passion
    • Chapter 8: Lose the Ego
    • Chapter 9: Coach, Mentor, & Mastermind
    • Chapter 10: Celebrate the Wins

The book is available to pre-order, with the official release date set for October 19.

Building Organic Relationships in Real Estate with Quintavius "Q" Burdette Aug 04, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode of Start With A Win, Win Nation will meet Quintavius “Q” Burdette, RE/MAX real estate agent. He is a former D1 football and track athlete from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) who integrated his work ethic as an athlete into his real estate business.

Q has been in the real estate industry for two and a half years. During his first year, he closed 106 transactions and eventually achieved Diamond status—a million dollars in gross commission—in August 2020. He has built his success by developing a four-point system, which measures his daily activity and maintains productivity. The concept is to achieve any combination of four points daily, outlined by these tasks:

    • 4 points = contract
    • 2 points = listing agreement
    • 1 point = showing buyers
    • 1/2 point = meeting potential clients looking to do business within 90 days

Q also attributes his success to building organic relationships and focusing less on paying for leads and marketing. One of the common ways Q meets others in the community is by going to the local Kroger store and assisting customers with bagging groceries. This type of networking enabled him to talk to 6,000 people in his first 30 days as a real estate agent. Presentation is vital, as it is essential to be aware of your tone, delivery, and what you’re going to say. Q explains how the real estate business comes down to heart. It’s about how much you’re willing to work, network, and build relationships.

    Emotional Mastery May 26, 2021
    Show notes

Adam shares his insights on leadership and emotional mastery in this episode of Start With A Win. He says many people neglect emotional intelligence and emotional maturity, pursuing financial- or performance-based goals. However, pushing your people to reach those KPIs without establishing a foundation of emotional mastery is counterproductive. The two aspects of emotional mastery—the ability to control your emotions—are emotional intelligence and emotional maturity.

Emotional intelligence boils down to empathy, being aware of your own feelings, the feelings of others, and how they fit together. It is vital to understand that there are only two core emotions: fear and love. Fear is the default emotion and often accompanied by the word "but" or the phrase, "I’m busy." When you operate through fear, you can not master your emotions. Love, on the other hand, requires intentionality and leads to unconditional giving.

Emotional maturity is essentially choice management, Adam says. Your choices will determine your results, so it is best to create your own good choices to get the results you want. Love and fear come to play here, too, because the ego enters into the arena to fight back when you make a bad choice because it has an inherent fear of failure. Adam’s mantra, which fits in well here, is “stay hungry, stay humble.” It is essential to learn from others constantly and to own your choices. Leaders control their emotions while demonstrating an example to others.

The Journey to Self-Awareness with Dr. Tasha Eurich Mar 10, 2021
    Show notes

Our guest on this episode of the Start With A Win podcast is Dr. Tasha Eurich, New York Times bestselling author of Insight and experienced executive coach and researcher specializing in self-awareness. Tasha and her team have spent the past seven years researching these four questions:

    1. What is self-awareness?
    2. Where does it come from?
    3. Why do we need it?
    4. How do we get more of it?

Essentially, they have boiled down the definition of self-awareness to: “the will and skill to see ourselves clearly.” This level of self-knowledge includes both internal (who we are at our core) and external self-awareness (how people see us). Self-aware individuals possess both internal and external, which sets them apart from the 80% or so of people who think they are self-aware but are not. Tasha has found that there are many internal barriers that people set up for themselves that keep them from attaining self-awareness and that gathering internal and external feedback helps to break down these barriers.

When focusing on internal feedback, Tasha recommends a daily habitual practice of asking yourself these three questions:

    1. What went well today?
    2. What didn’t go well today?
    3. What can I do to be smarter tomorrow?

Soliciting external feedback is more about asking the right people than asking the right questions. Tasha says that these people should want you to succeed and be willing to say the difficult thing when necessary. The Power of Genuine Connections with Angelica Olmsted Mar 03, 2021
    Show notes

Our guest on this episode of the Start With A Win podcast is Angelica Olmsted, a flourishing real estate agent in the Denver metro area. Angelica started her career in the real estate industry, working at Booj and creating technology products to assist real estate professionals before leaping into being an agent in 2020. During this big transition, Angelica says that she felt overwhelmed by the big learning curve, but she found success in setting a few small goals at a time. These milestones helped her break down her bigger goals into more manageable tasks. For example, she spent several weeks focused on building out her CRM system with her existing contacts before reaching out to them and starting to track her interactions. Her current project involves filling in the birthday of her CRM contacts. She focuses on two letters of the alphabet per week.

An integral part of Angelica’s business is establishing genuine connections with people. She has linked her contacts’ social media accounts to their CRM entries. Before calling someone, she always takes a few minutes to review what they have been up to lately, both because she genuinely wants to know and show them that they are important to her. After every call or text, Angelica always adds a task for her next contact with that person. She follows up by sending them an interesting article, calling them back in a few weeks to see how their recent race went, or dropping a handwritten card and a lottery ticket in the mail for them on their birthday.

Angelica tries to find a balance between promoting herself and sharing fun and personal posts on social media. She wants to give her friends and followers a glimpse of her personal and professional lives because if she provides them with insightful and engaging content, she will be top-of-mind for them when it comes time to buy or sell their next home.

Solocast: The Truth About Leadership Feb 24, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode of the Start With A Win podcast, Adam shares his insights on leadership and the ways many perspectives on the subject are missing the point. You are not a leader simply because of your job title or having people reporting directly to you. In fact, leading has nothing to do with who you are but rather what you do. Leadership is learned on-the-job, first-hand, by being responsible for other people and their outcomes. This responsibility spans from CEOs to stay-at-home parents, from little league coaches to real estate broker-owners, and is different than just “being in charge."

Leadership involves an intentional daily practice of managing your emotions, attitudes, interactions, and actions. Take a moment to evaluate how you are doing in these areas. How are you leading through your attitudes and actions? What are you portraying to those you are influencing? What are people hearing and experiencing from you? This self-awareness should partner with a willingness to lead yourself as well. It is crucial people see you doing what you are telling them to do, setting that example and consistently living it out. Leading by example is especially important when leading within a company. Adam gives the example of encouraging RE/MAX employees to utilize video and directly communicate with clients by demonstrating those actions himself. Leadership is an opportunity and a responsibility that should not be taken lightly. Evaluate how you are doing, and then take steps to be better.

Real Talk and Thankfulness with Adam and Kelly Contos Nov 25, 2020
    Show notes

On this episode of the Start With A Win podcast, we are joined by Kelly Contos, which gave Mark the perfect opportunity to practice his game show host skills during a lightning round of the Newlywed Game. You may be surprised to find out who looks better in glasses and who is the better singer!

When it comes to supporting Adam as the CEO of such a large and prominent company, Kelly says that her main objective is to be there for whatever he needs. Sometimes that means making sure he stays on schedule and gets from place to place, and sometimes that means noticing when he needs some human interaction and sending him to the office. Kelly knows how important Adam’s work is to him, but most important are the people around him, so she encourages him to lean into his team.

Adam and Kelly are both thankful for their health, the people they choose to spend life with, their freedoms, opportunities, and the successes that have resulted from those opportunities and hard work.

A Coronavirus Message from Adam Mar 25, 2020
    Show notes

Adam and Mark discuss the recent changes in our world as a result of the coronavirus and talk about ways that listeners can continue to start with a win even when everything seems so different than normal. The response mandated by health officials and governments all over the world is significantly more stringent than the typical response to influenza, and this is likely the only pandemic any of us have ever lived through. Everyone seems to be dealing with these changes and restrictions differently, ranging from crippling fear to careless abandon and anywhere in between.

Adam’s advice is to listen to the doctors and government officials and see this as an opportunity to reconnect with your loved ones and be more intentional about spending quality time with them while practicing safe social distancing. He asserts that if you are stuck in a cycle of fear-mongering or doubt, take a step back and evaluate what you can do with what you have, doing everything you can to protect yourself and those around you. For business leaders, the most important thing you can do is be visible and available to your team. Send out daily emails, videos, or texts to encourage and check in on them.

In the real estate realm, house showings are still feasible through virtual tours, and if you do meet with clients in person, don’t be afraid to ask them if they are feeling well or if they have been in contact with anyone who has COVID-19. It is in everyone’s best interests if you are honest with yourself and others about how you are feeling and that you demonstrate good hygiene practices to those around you.

Take heart that while the markets are rough right now, they will bounce back in time. Do what you can to support local businesses in your community by ordering takeout or patronizing them online when possible. With all of this unexpected free time, be active and create a healthy routine for yourself and your family. Pay attention to those around you and do what you can to reach out while practicing social distancing. We are all in this together.

Advancing Hispanic Homeownership with NAHREP's Gary Acosta Mar 04, 2020
    Show notes

On this episode of the Start With A Win podcast, our guest is Gary Acosta, CEO and Co-Founder of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals. NAHREP is celebrating its 20th anniversary as a trade association this year and they are continuing to see growth in their membership numbers, as well as the number of Hispanic homebuyers. Every year, NAHREP conducts a study called The State of Hispanic Homeowners to stay informed about the trends among Hispanic families and gain a better understanding of the statistics.

NAHREP aims to educate and empower both their member agents/brokers and their potential clients by advancing sustainable homeownership among Hispanics in the US. Since 70% of Latino homebuyers are first-time homebuyers, it is essential that they find a real estate agent they can trust to walk them through the process and help them make good decisions along the way. More Hispanic families are buying homes than ever before, but some are nervous to take that first step because they are intimidated by the process. Real estate agents must be culturally competent and prioritize helping families over closing deals. Homebuyers should focus on finding an agent they can trust and getting prequalified before looking for a home.

Gary is a phenomenal leader because he believes in having a conversation every day with someone who outranks him. He recommends this practice to the members of NAHREP and everyone else he leads in some way.
