Original Trilogy In Review Jan 25, 2024
    Show notes
We wrap up our discussion of the Star Wars original trilogy—things we noticed, favorite characters and storylines, issues, and parts of which we want more.Key Discussion Points
    • Our greater appreciation for the original trilogy and characters like Han, Luke, and Leia after analyzing them more closely as adults
    • We examine issues around the "Slave Leia" outfit and the need for more diversity in the original trilogy casts
    • Lucas was a creative visionary but needed editors and collaborators to refine his ideas into an accessible story
    • The trilogy holds up well as a coherent narrative, more so than the prequels or sequels
    • Highlights include the droids as connective threads and Greek chorus, the consistent humor of C-3PO, and Mark Hamill's layered performance as Luke
    Other Topics Covered:
    • Flaws like the Leia sibling reveal, underdeveloped characters like Chewbacca, and logic gaps around the Falcon being tracked
    • Possible spinoff shows around characters like Lando Calrissian and backstories of figures like Mon Mothma
    • Whether a standalone Darth Vader movie is needed or if appearances in other stories would be better
    • Cosplay charity events for kids with communication disorders

    Rebels • S4 E13-14 Jan 11, 2024
    Show notes
This week Matthew and Riki discuss two pivotal episodes from season 4 of Star Wars Rebels. In episode 13, "A World Between Worlds," we're introduced to a mystical realm that connects all of time and space in the Star Wars universe. Ezra is able to pull Ahsoka from her fateful duel with Darth Vader in this mystical world between worlds. While captivating visually, Matthew and Riki have some concerns about introducing this level of power over time and space into the Star Wars canon. It could act as an all-powerful plot device or retcon elements, which they worry may undermine storytelling. However, the concept allows Ahsoka to realistically survive and still be unavailable during the original trilogy.Episode 14, "A Fool's Hope," brings together a lovable ragtag group including Hondo, Gregor, Wolffe, and Ketsu to help liberate Lothal. Their fierce loyalty to Ezra feels genuinely earned after years of friendship and camaraderie. Ryder's fake betrayal of the rebels fools both the audience and the arrogant Governor Pryce, contrasting her ego with Grand Admiral Thrawn's true cunning. Visually, a standout moment involves the Loth-wolves' glowing eyes emerging from darkness to terrify the imperials. After the plot discussion, Matthew and Riki go into spoilers, analyzing how these episodes connect to Ahsoka's mysterious absence after Return of the Jedi and her role in the recent Ahsoka TV show. Riki continues to be moved by the special relationship between Ezra and his master Kanan. They also recommend the new Thrawn books for more context on these events. As always, this episode offers thoughtful insight for both casual and diehard fans of Star Wars and its beloved animated series. No member bonus content for this one.

2023 Star Wars Year in Review Jan 04, 2024
    Show notes
Join hosts Matthew Fox and Erin McGowan, plus regular guest Danielle (Written in the Star Wars), as they recap an exciting year in the Star Wars galaxy! The trio of fans reflects on standout moments from new shows, books, comics and more in 2023.Disney+ series like Ahsoka and The Mandalorian deliver compelling new characters and long-awaited live action appearances. The subtle bonds between Ahsoka and Sabine resonate, while shifty new villain Shin leaves an impression. Seeing legendary strategist Thrawn rendered in live action is a landmark for many devotees of the expanded universe. The group also sings the praises of The Bad Batch's second season and its exploration of the Mandalorian diaspora. The appearance of charismatic clone trooper Mayday is a particular delight. Over in publishing, the Doctor Aphra audio book helps bring that fan-favorite comic character to life in a new medium. It isn't all perfect - some disappointing franchise tie-in books and the continued overlooking of pivotal characters like Satine Kryze leave them wanting. But the hosts find the year marked by diversity of perspective in stories like Rise of the Red Blade. While a few letdowns stick out, overall 2023 offers Star Wars fans new avenues into the galaxy far, far away. Matthew, Erin and Danielle can't wait to see what adventures and revelations 2024 will bring! May the Force be with you!
