Ohio Outdoors - The Ohio Deer Herd with Mike Tonkovich Nov 18, 2021
    Show notes

The rut is in full swing, but the boys are swinging and missing. Corey spent an entire day away from his family to see 1 deer every 6.25 hours. Paul and Andrew made a trip to an OHLAP property. Beautiful property, bad hunters. Andrew was able to put some more meat in the freezer with another doe, because you know, who shoots does during the rut??? The expert today, is Mike Tonkovich, of the Ohio Division of Wildlife. Mike has been the state deer biologist for 26 years. The conversation only covers the tip of the ice berg in relation to white tail issues in the state of Ohio. Look for Mike again down the road where we can dive deep in to topics like CWD, Habitat, Herd Management and much more. Enjoy the conversation, and good luck in the woods! Average Conservationist - Salmon Run with Keaton Eckley and Nick Minden Nov 18, 2021
    Show notes

Joining Marcus today on The Average Conservationist Podcast are Keaton Eckley and Nick Minden. Keaton and Nick are the co-founders of 2% Certified Fisherman's Brew Coffee. The group kicks things off talking about their respective upbringings and how the two of them were introduced to each other. Growing up in the Northwest, salmon fishing is almost a way of life and as the guys got older they realized that a once healthy and thriving salmon population had started to decrease and they needed to do something about it. Enter Fisherman's Brew Coffee, a company that was born for the sole purpose of helping raise money and awareness for local salmon habitat and population. This is a great conversation from start to finish with two guys who are just trying to make a difference with something that they love. If you're in the market for some new coffee, be sure and check them out. Average Conservationist is Powered by Simplecast

DIY Sportsman - Being Consistent on Public Land Nov 18, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett sits down with Brian Dombrowski of Wisconsin, who he originally met while hunting public land on an out-of-state trip. Brian hunts many different habitat types but really enjoys tackling bigger parcels or timber or marshland, where he's been able to take several nice deer over the years. His methods and descriptions of hunting marshes differ a bit from the typical media we here describing them. In addition to talking about Brian's year round process and using in-season scouting to hone in on a particular area, we also do two hunt breakdowns... one for an old central WI buck taken this year, and another for a giant out-of-state buck that Brian shot in early September. N.F.C. - Nine Fingers Unfiltered Back Half of The Rut Nov 17, 2021
    Show notes

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan breaks down the second half of the whitetail rut and what he would be doing if he was still hunting. He explains that now is the time to make a move if you haven't already and look for unpressured nooks and crannies of your hunting property that deer might be hiding in. He also talks about how a different access route may be in order if you are bumping deer on the way to the treestand. But, changing your approach goes deeper then just stand locations and access routes. It also means moving trail cameras that haven't produced the caliber of deer you are looking for as well as a quick scouting walk to look for the newest sign. Land & Legacy - Insider Secrets to Growing Giant Whitetails Annually Nov 16, 2021
    Show notes

Are there really secrets left in deer management? The answer is no, but we still have lots left to figure out. One aspect of deer management that seems to be forgotten is the idea of overall herd management. Hunters seem to divide the deer population into two segments and treat them separately despite them being the same animal. We can’t expect to consistently grow above average bucks in a given sea in stressful conditions. Nothing and no one does well under stress, yet many hunters allow deer herds to become stressed in relation to population dynamics and the carrying capacity. We’ve got to manage the natural resource and find the balance or harmony with the land to reach an optimal state that produces giant deer annually. Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast

Land & Legacy - How to Accomplish More Habitat Work with OnX Nov 16, 2021
    Show notes

We all start out with the best of intentions when it comes to the work we want to accomplish on a property. We create our own to - do lists while hunting but then sit in wonder where the time went and why only half the work got done. There are tons of tools available to help manage work, however we recommend using OnX Hunt! This tool now allows you to create layers and folders to store information, waypoints, shape file, etc. So our pro-tip is to take the to-do list you’ve created and block out each unit you want to work but then sort them in folders based on each month. Only focus on the work you’ve added to the folder for the month you are in. So in March you should only be working on March projects. Stay on track and on task! That will get you more improved land quickly! Use the code Land&Legacy20 to save yourself on a yearly subscription! Land & Legacy is Powered by Simpleast
