Southern Ground Hunting - Beginners Guide To Thermal Hubs | How Do Bucks Use Them & How To Hunt Them with Matthew Reaves Dec 02, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to the Southern Ground Hunting podcast. Matthew Reaves of Southern Pursuit is hopping on to discuss rut hunting tactics for southern public land bucks. The topic of the conversation is thermal hubs and how productive they can be if hunted correctly. Matthew and Parker both share stories of their recent successful hunts on thermal hubs, both describing how they set up and how the bucks presented a shot. Thermal hubs can be one of the most difficult terrain features to hunt effectively. Wind and thermals tend to be tough to understand, especially in these "magic holes" as Matthew calls them. The guys go over, in detail, how the hunts played out, and why they think they were able to put bucks on the ground. DIY Sportsman - Late Season Hunting Strategy with Johnny Stewart Dec 02, 2021
    Show notes

On today's podcast I've got Johnny Stewart on again as a guest, and we're talking about Late Season. Now, some might call Johnny somewhat of a rut and Late Season specialist, because his job doesn't give him a ton of free time in the early season. So he'll often hunt until the bitter end in states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, or even Iowa, and has killed a number of good deer during that timeframe. We discuss big woods, like the national forest that we walked together during the Spartan Forge veterans hunt a couple of weeks ago, and how to find likely food sources in vast areas. Then we also talk about more pocketed areas of land where there might even be ag as a food source. In addition to finding food, we talk setups, access, pressure, weather, and off-the wall tactics like scouting at night when the deer are out feeding away from their bedding areas. Missouri Woods & Water - Dropping Bucks During The Rut Nov 30, 2021
    Show notes

On the Missouri Woods & Water podcast this week, the crew breaks down our hot streak during the rut. First, our buddy and returning guest Pat Slivkov talks about taking down an awesome buck just before rifle season hit on November 11th. He battled through some adversity to get it done this year. Next, Nate breaks down how he finally caught up with a buck he has been after nicknamed Noob Saibot. Nate has known Noob for several years and has been after him and another buck all year. In our episode a few weeks ago, Nate talked about how he just couldn't seem to catch up to Noob, but on opening morning of rifle season he made a good decision that led to killing this target buck. Last, Andy tells the story that led to him being tagged out in Missouri for the year. After harvesting his early archery season deer that he discussed in our episode a few weeks back, he got back at it once rifle season hit. On November 15th, the third day of the rifle season, Andy came across a deer he has known, but this time noticed something very different about him. After watching him for a while, Andy decided to punch his tag on that awesome mature buck. Micah hasn't punched a tag yet, but he talks through his year so far as well. One thing is for sure, our little MWW family had one hell of a week during the rut. We hope that anyone who hasn't gotten it done so far this year can make it happen throughout the rest of the season. Good luck the rest of the year! Missouri Woods & Water is Powered by Simplecast

Land & Legacy - Oak Management Recap - How Does this apply to a Landowner? Nov 30, 2021
    Show notes

After enjoying the conversation on the other podcast this week with Dr. Marcus Lashley so much, we felt it was best to further unpack why this information is significant and how it can be applied to your land. With every guest and topic, we do, this is the question we want to address and answer as plainly as possible. So Matt and Adam spend an hour discussing with you the ways we can be more productive and set up farms in relation to acorn mast-producing trees. How do we hunt based on this information is another question we answer during this podcast recap. Of course, we do address the question of which acorn is more impactful to deer, red or white? We hope you enjoy this podcast and take the information to heart! Time to make our land the best it can be! Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast

Land & Legacy - Understanding Oak Management for Wildlife with Dr. Marcus Lashley Nov 30, 2021
    Show notes

Grab your pens and paper, because you are getting ready to learn on this podcast with Dr. Marcus Lashley. We take a deep dive into the production, selection preferences of red versus white oaks, and forage habitats of whitetail deer regarding mast production. Just like most things in life, once you learn a little, you are left with more questions versus answers. For years hunters have placed more significance on the white oak acorn over the red acorn. This isn't often debated, more accepted, however, that is nonsense. There is more to learn about these little nuggets of fat than we thought. Acorn viability is there determining factor in the timing of foraging. What about fall burning, how does that impact selection of mast species? Well, we discuss this as well during the podcast. Come to this podcast with an open mind! The foraging behavior of whitetail deer is just incredible, so land managers and deer hunters need to pay attention and learn how to make the most of this quality information. Pennsylvania Woodsman - If You Can’t Beat Them, Join the PA Orange Army Nov 29, 2021
    Show notes

Few states can compete with the hunting heritage of Pennsylvania’s opening day of rifle season. Everyone seems to take time off from work and venture out. As fun as this season can be, it can also be a challenge. With more hunting pressure than any other time throughout the season, deer quickly “hole up” in security zones. If you haven’t filled a buck tag in archery season, this new added pressure may make it more difficult to harvest the buck you’ve set out for. Instead of getting frustrated with the change in pressure, use it to your advantage! Food is still king; however, pressure may cause food sources to be used just after dark. We discuss how and where to position yourself throughout opening week with your greatest odds, including stand hunting, still hunting, and a lot of people’s favorite: group hunting. Remember, as carried away as die-hard whitetail hunters can get, this is a time of year to cherish. We are privileged to be hunting in Penn’s Woods! This is an opportunity to be thankful and share memories with family and friends. We can still be strategic along the way! Pennsylvania Woodsman is Powered by Simplecast

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John tells the story of his 2021 Texas rifle buck, as well as some close calls he has had on the home place in Oklahoma. The Texas buck took a lot of driving, some patience, and way too much texting. John even jumped the buck on the way into the stand! Back in Oklahoma, he had one of his hit list bucks at 18 yards, and one of the craziest buck filled morning hunts of his entire life. Oklahoma Outdoors is Powered by Simplecast
