Nomadic Outdoorsman - Missouri Hunting Addiction May 09, 2022
    Show notes

On this episode of The nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with fellow Missourian and avid outdoorsman Nick Hoerchler about his passion for deer and ducks.

Nick is a 21 year old outdoorsman that is as addicted to hunting as a person can be. He grew up in Washington, Missouri where his grandpa taught him all about hunting from a very young age. In his first year bowhunting (12 years old) Nick only missed 5 total weekends throughout the season. He worked his way from hunting squirrels up to deer, turkey, and waterfowl. While hunting began as a family event for Nick it has evolved to include his girlfriend and friends that he made in college. Nick also grew up trout fishing many of Missouri’s rivers around Montauk and Bennet Springs state parks. He has been blessed to fish some of the rivers in Yellowstone National park as well. Dan and Nick discuss their obsession for chasing after animals all fall.

Pennsylvania Woodsman - How to Convert Cropland to Wildlife Habitat May 06, 2022
    Show notes

What seems to be the norm under private land is that more acres mean better hunting. It cannot be ignored that whitetails (and other wildlife) have a home range much larger than the size of the average Northeast parcel. But often, landowners complain about their inability to hold wildlife on their small property for the wrong reasons - efficiency. On this week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch dives into the controversial topic of Agriculture, CREP, and how they often do not correspond with quality wildlife habitat.

Many people are in the market to buy a chunk of land to call home and have quality hunting opportunity. Let’s make a case you are looking to purchase land in a mixed agricultural area. Now ask yourself which of these scenarios are better: 1) purchase the largest property you can afford but be forced to rent cropland to a local farmer or government CREP program due to financial reasons, or 2) purchase a smaller property that you’re able to implement what the property needs in order to be as efficient as possible for your goals? In most cases the latter may be a better solution for a person who wants to have a whitetail and wildlife paradise. You’d be amazed the potential of a small property with the correct practices implemented. There is no one size fits all policy for property improvements, but these practices may be something to consider implementing on your property.

Southern Ground - Texas Desert Turkey Hunting May 05, 2022
    Show notes

The Southern Ground Hunting podcast heads west this week. Parker and his Dad recap a successful turkey hunt to the desert of west Texas. While we're usually talking about hunting turkeys on public land, most people know that it's nearly not even doable to do so in Texas. Usually, people who want to mark Texas off the list have to settle for an outfitter, which can be very expensive. However, we were able to find a couple of different properties to hunt for $0 by just making a few phone calls. Turkey culture in Texas is just altogether different. Parker admits that he did not appreciate the wild turkey while being raised out there, but it was time to come back to the old stompin' grounds to pay this bird the respect it deserves. If you've never given Texas a shot, you really should consider it. We promise you won't regret it!

DIY Sportsman - Turkey Roosting and Hunting Strategy May 05, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett gives two hunt breakdowns from his recent Iowa hunt with Shane Simpson. On the first hunt, which ended in a successful setup, Garrett discusses the hunt details. However, perhaps more importantly, he dives into the decision making process of the access and set up pre-dawn, knowing exactly where to best position on the terrain for pulling the bird into shotgun range and not hanging up. On the second hunt breakdown, Garrett describes a similar scenario that ended up with a big tom hanging just out of shotgun range, and what the two could and should have done differently in hindsight.

How To Hunt Deer - How To Choose The Right Bow For Deer Hunting with Nate Sellers May 05, 2022
    Show notes

Ask ten different guys to name the best bow on the market for hunting whitetails and you’ll probably get ten different answers. When it comes to archery equipment, there is no such thing as one size fits all. There are a ton of variables to consider when choosing the right bow for you and the way you hunt. So how do you go about narrowing the field and finding the right bow?

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Nate Sellers of Average Jack Archery. Nate is an absolute wealth of knowledge when it comes to hunting, gear, and especially archery equipment. He’s got a Youtube channel with tons of hunting content and gear reviews, so there’s no one better to break down all that goes into finding the right bow for you.

After sharing a bit of Nate’s archery journey, Nate and Josh discuss some base level definitions for common archery terms like brace height, back wall, and valley. After that, Nate discusses what is, and really isn’t, important when choosing a bow. The guys wrap up the conversation with questions about buying used vs. new and top tier brands vs. budget archery brands. If you plan to buy a new bow this off season, or any time for that matter, you won’t want to miss this episode!

Nomadic Outdoorsman - Missouri Waterfowl for the Serious Hunter May 05, 2022
    Show notes

On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with Chandler Saultz, a die hard waterfowler from the heart of Missouri.

Chandler grew up on Lake of the Ozarks hunting and fishing on his family farm. He started hunting when he was 9 years old, waterfowling at 18 and now at 31 he enjoys spending time outdoors with his family, friends, and bringing new people into the sport. In college he lived with a call maker/waterfowl guide and that’s when his passion for waterfowl began. He is now a teacher and coach in a small school district in Hickory County where he has been teaching and coaching for 12 years. When Chandler’s not coaching you can find him hunting or scouting for waterfowl. Chandler is an avid waterfowler and bow hunter. He has 2 boys (7 and 8 years old) and a little girl due may 22nd. Dan and Chandler discuss their extreme differences in success and technique while chasing waterfowl in the Show Me state.

N.F.C. - Mental Health, Deer Hunting and Other Rants with Tony Peterson May 04, 2022
    Show notes

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Tony Peterson is back on the podcast for an absolute random conversation about 1980's pop culture and of course deer hunting. The guys kick off the episode by talking who their actress crushes were when they were kids and video games like pac-man. The conversation turns to how they communicate with their wives leading up to a hunting trip. They talk about what they would be doing if they weren't in the jobs they are currently working and how that might reflect the amount of time spend in the woods every year.

The topic turns to mental health and how the guys cope with their weekly and annual stress by physical activity like working out and creating content that is hunting related. Although this isn't an episode that talks about in-depth big buck hunting strategy, it is an important conversation that will have you thinking about a potential lifestyle change and how it relates to hunting overall.

Lastly, the guys go on a rant about social media and those in the hunting industry who may not be representing hunting in the right light.

    Tony's view is refreshing. Enjoy!

Ohio Outdoors - Flyfishing 101 with Jacob and Derek from GoWild May 04, 2022
    Show notes

This week on the Ohio Outdoor podcast, the guys sit down and with Jacob Knight and Derek Towles from GoWild. Jacob is an experienced flyfisherman (is that a word?) and Derek has learned over the past few years from Jacob. The guys go through the basic gear needed to get into flyfishing. There is a lot involved with getting started but Jacob and Derek break it down to a manageable format.

The guys both got out on the water over the past week. Andrew was able to reel in a few walleye, while Paul was out pick up New York’s saltwater Sheep head…. ? Paul did a little time in the woods, but no birds yet. Across the state and Midwest it seems as though the birds are a bit lagging with the spring. Fingers crossed the heat turns up here soon. Good luck to those out this week!
