Antler Up - Fine-Tuning Success: Simplifying Your Hunt with Travis Melochick Aug 28, 2024
    Show notes

In this episode of the Antler Up Podcast, host Jeremy Dinsmore is joined by fellow PA hunter Travis Melochick to get into the nuances of hunting. They discuss the importance of fine-tuning your existing hunting areas instead of constantly chasing new ones, emphasizing that simplicity often leads to success. Travis shares his belief that while skill is crucial, luck also plays a significant role in hunting, and it’s vital to acknowledge and appreciate the unpredictability of the sport. The conversation touches on the value of humility, avoiding the pitfalls of overcomplicating your approach, and steering clear of hunting gimmicks that promise more than they deliver.

Jeremy and Travis also highlight the significance of enjoying the journey and the camaraderie that comes with hunting. They stress the importance of prioritizing family, ensuring that hunting doesn’t overshadow the meaningful moments in life. Understanding that each hunting area and deer herd is unique, they encourage listeners to focus on the little things, like meticulous scouting and fine-tuning specific spots, rather than searching for one-size-fits-all solutions. This episode is a reminder to cherish the experiences, the friendships, and the lessons that hunting brings, both in the woods and in life.

So, grab your gear, sit back, and join us on this episode as we Antler Up with Travis Melochick on today's episode of the Antler Up Podcast.

Pennsylvania Woodsman - Countdown To Bear Season Aug 28, 2024
    Show notes

In this episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch discusses his experience with bear scouting and hunting leading into the 2024 season. After a successful 2023 season, he is back in New Jersey for bigger and better things. There were many takeaways from last season, forcing Mitch to modify his preparation for an even better outcome this year. This includes the importance of scouting and finding food sources, as well as the need for fallback options and scouting for people pressure.

Finding food in summer is a start, but it's also crucial to continue to monitor as the season start to close in. Mitch shares the scale of land he is scouting both with cameras and boots-on-ground, and how he plans to choose stand locations for wind direction and lay of the land. The goals and outlook for this season are slightly different from normal: be patient, learn from your experiences, and set realistic expectations for the hunting season with the time that's available to prepare.

Hunt Detail - Find the Whitetail "Feed Tree" Aug 28, 2024
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jacob outlines how to discern between white and red oaks, and more specifically, some of the subtypes of white and red oak trees that cover different regions of the midwest, northeast, and southeast. As archery deer seasons begin to open across the country, identifying the hot oak flat for whitetails can translate into early season success. White oak flats specifically can be ideal areas for bucks to stage prior to coming to soybeans or corn, they can also serve as a primary food source on properties that lack agriculture. As the season moves on and other food sources wane, red oak acorns can be an option to target as well.

How To Hunt Turkey - Hunting For Memories: A Season Of Stories Aug 28, 2024
    Show notes

In this episode, I share the story of the last time I shot a Jake during turkey season. I also reflect on my journey as a turkey hunter and the lessons I have learned along the way. I talk about the importance of living in the moment and not judging a season based on a small sample size. I also discuss my experience with buying a new shotgun, the importance of knowing how your shotgun shoots and being confident in your pattern. I also recap getting permission to hunt a new piece of land, how hard that can be and how amazing it is to get new land to hunt. I had a great time reliving the highs and lows of these turkey hunts and the great memories I have from that season! It's a great reminder that hunting is more than the goal, it's about the memories and experiences we would never get doing anything else!

Whitetail Landscapes - Leveling Up Your Hunting Property Before the Season Aug 27, 2024
    Show notes

Thomas Mlsna, founder of Untamed Ambition, joins the podcast to discuss the importance of trail cameras in hunting preparation. In this conversation, Jon Teater and Thomas discuss various topics related to hunting property design and management. They cover the importance of wet meadows in hunting properties, the use of compost teas to promote microbial activity in food plots, and the challenges of balancing soil health and weed control. They also touch on the concept of solarization, the benefits of diverse plant blends, and the value of focusing on the surrounding habitat rather than just food plots. Additionally, they discuss the use of herbicides, the benefits of no-till drilling, and the importance of soil amendments in timber areas. In this conversation, Jon Teater and Thomas discuss the importance of long-term habitat management and the role of consultants in implementing systems and routines. They emphasize the need to address weak points on the property and improve soil health through methods like fertilization and introducing organic matter. They also discuss the value of fire as a tool for cycling through vegetation and the challenges of using prescribed fire in certain areas. They highlight the significance of diversity in habitat and the impact of food plots on the surrounding environment. They encourage listeners to observe and experiment with different amendments and plant species to improve their habitat. Finally, they provide some quick tips for improving habitat before hunting season, including timber stand improvement, burning, and scouting.

    Takeaways:

    • Trail cameras only tell you where you should have been, not where you should be.
    • Trail cameras only tell you what is happening directly in front of them.
    • Pressure is anything that causes stress or discomfort on a deer to a level that it's going to change their behavior.
    • There are really only two things that reduce pressure on deer. It is cover and consistency in pressure or lack thereof.
    • Topography is the greatest form of cover there is.
    • Variation in food value, a variation in food type composition is extremely important.

Missouri Woods & Water - The Hunter Decline Myth With Nicole Qualtieri Aug 27, 2024
    Show notes

This week on the Missouri Woods & Water Podcast we get the chance to talk with Nicole Qualtieri. The conversation is about an article titled 'The Hunter Decline Myth' written by Nicole Qualtieri. The article challenges the fear-based marketing around the decline of hunters and highlights the importance of engaging non-hunters in conservation efforts. It discusses the per capita hunting numbers and the need to educate people about habitat and public lands. The article aims to spark conversations between hunters and non-hunters and promote a better understanding of the hunting community. Hunters are not declining, but hunting is a privilege that can be changed by legislators. It is important to advocate for hunting and share the experiences with others. The number of hunters may not be decreasing, but the availability of hunting opportunities and habitat are concerns. Success in hunting can be defined as either killing an animal or having a positive experience. An open invitation and inclusive vision of hunting can attract new and reactivated hunters.

Wisconsin Sportsman - How to Hunt Like a Wolf with Andrae D'Acquisto Aug 27, 2024
    Show notes

On this episode of The Wisconsin Sportsman, Pierce sits down with the lone wolf himself; Andrae D'Acquisto to talk all about the keys to consistently killing trophy bucks, hunting fresh sign, tactically pressuring deer, staying mobile, high-level thermal concepts, and above all else: hunting like a wolf

If there's any name out there that's practically synonymous with big deer, it's Andrae D'Acquisto, and for folks who haven't heard of him, he's the mind behind today's modern mobile hunting equipment and tactics. A Milwaukee-native, Andrae started building his own mobile treestands in his garage back in 1984 when he realized there was nothing else on the market that did what he needed it to do. Fast forward 40 years to today, and Lone Wolf Custom Gear is the leading name in mobile hunting.

Pierce and Andrae discuss Andrae's unique mentality when it comes to hunting giant deer, and contrary to what a lot of hunters will tell you, Andrae isn't afraid to shove a big buck around if he needs to in order to stack the deck in his favor. The guys talk about how crucial it is to stay mobile so that you're always in a "virgin spot" where deer have never encountered human presence before. After that, they dive into two thermal concepts you don't often hear about: thermal overflow and thermal creep, and after hearing Andrae's breakdown of each, you'll understand why that big one busted you last season. Lastly, the guys tease an upcoming episode all about the art of the Bump & Dump which will come out in part 2 of this conversation in a few weeks. All that and more in this week's episode!

Big thanks to Andrae for joining us this week! Follow along with Lone Wolf Custom Gear at www.lonewolfcustomgear.comor @lonewolfcustomgear and @whitetailaddictions on social media
