    N.F.C. - Deer Behavior Insights From A Wildlife Biologist Dec 18, 2024
    Show notes

In this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles podcast, host Dan Johnson speaks with wildlife biologist Brian Murphy about the intersection of parenting and deer hunting. They discuss the importance of setting boundaries in parenting, the experiences of raising daughters who are avid hunters, and the challenges of transitioning from parenting young children to adult children. The conversation then shifts to deer hunting, focusing on the rut, its timing, and the impact of environmental factors such as weather on deer movement. Murphy shares insights from his extensive research on deer biology, emphasizing that the rut occurs consistently despite varying conditions and that hunters' perceptions often differ from the biological realities. In this conversation, Dan Johnson and Brian Murphy delve into the various stressors that affect whitetail deer, particularly during winter months. They discuss how environmental factors, such as severe weather and food availability, impact deer populations across different regions. The conversation also highlights the biological adaptations of deer that enable them to survive harsh conditions, as well as the importance of managing food sources to support deer health. Additionally, they explore the effects of human activity on deer stress levels and share insights from recent research on deer behavior and habitat use.

    Takeaways:

    • Parenting requires setting clear boundaries and expectations.
    • Daughters can be just as passionate about hunting as sons.
    • The rut timing is consistent across different regions.
    • Weather can significantly impact deer movement and hunting experiences.
    • Hunters often have skewed perceptions of deer activity during the rut.
    • The rut is a self-correcting phenomenon influenced by environmental factors.
    • Expectations of hunters have changed over time due to improved deer populations.
    • Local breeding strategies can adapt to environmental conditions.
    • The science of deer biology reveals complex patterns in rut timing.
    • Communication and honesty are key in parenting adult children. Whitetail deer face unique challenges in different environments.
    • Severe winters can significantly impact deer reproduction and survival.
    • Snow can act as a thermal insulator for deer, aiding their survival.
    • Deer can enter a state of semi-hibernation during extreme cold.
    • Natural browse is crucial for maintaining deer health during winter.
    • Food plots should focus on high-quality forage for late-season nutrition.
    • Human activities can create additional stress for deer populations.
    • Social stress among bucks can negatively affect their health and antler growth.
    • Recent research reveals surprising insights into deer bedding behavior.
    • Effective food plot sizes for deer are typically between 2 to 4 acres.

    Show notes

The guys dive into Brian's season which started out in North Dakota, the trials and tribulations of targeting a big buck out there, the heartbreak he experienced learning a state that he knows he may not return to, how social media may be numbing us as hunters and taking the spark out of hunting, how he got his spark back after shooting a nice buck with his bow, a close-quarters opening day gun hunt, and how going with the flow of the woods led him to harvesting an awesome buck with his muzzleloader. The guys also talk about whether or not this deer season was weird like everyone has been saying, historical trail camera data, the impact of changing barometric pressure from hurricanes on deer, and the importance of learning with every hunt, and sharing knowledge with other hunters. Michigan Wild - Season Recap w/ Drew Hasler Dec 16, 2024
    Show notes

On this episode of Michigan Wild, Nate and Drew Halser sit down and recap their season. Drew and Nate have both had similar experiences this fall. Both guys ended up punching their Kansas tags this year while still finding themselves holding onto their Michigan buck tags. Not only do they have their tags, but the target bucks they were chasing got shot by neighbors. Having a target buck harvested by a neighbor isn't a new thing, but it is always difficult to deal with. Nate and Drew both agree that trusting the process and sticking to their goals will pay off in the long run. The mere fact that they both have higher age class bucks to even chase is a win in their book and is a testament to all the hard work and dedication put forth each year.

Kansas was good to Nate and Drew this fall as they each filled their buck tags. Drew took a slightly different approach with scouting on this out of state hunt and it sure paid off. Drew had multiple encounters with shooter bucks and ultimately sealed the deal after a rollercoaster of a hunt. Nate and Drew both emphasized the importance of tackling a wide area/variety of properties as a team on this trip. By combining all the data learned through scouting and deer sightings it really helped both guys kill their Kansas bucks.

Rounding out the episode both guys are optimistic that they can get on a target buck these last few weeks of season. There are some great opportunities left and the plans are already in place to have a steller fall in 2025.

Oklahoma Outdoors - My West Texas Adventure Dec 16, 2024
    Show notes

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John heads to west Texas to chase mule deer in the Guadalupe Mountains. John had been looking forward to this hunt since he booked it in the early summer of 2023. He was originally supposed to go to south Texas, but unfortunately the ranch he was supposed to hunt on sold. Luckily the outfitter was able to move some things around and John headed west for his first ever fully guided hunt.

Upon arrival, John quickly realized that the cards were stacked against him as far as the weather was concerned. Sustained winds of 20+ mph and gusts as high as 35 mph kept the action a little slow the first two days. On the third day however, the winds died and the temps dropped and those final two days turned out to be magical. When all was said and done, John barely had enough room in the cooler for all the meat he brought home, including a pleasant and unexpected surprise. And of course, things ended up coming down to the wire.
