In Episode 2 of Speaking From Trauma to Recovery, Aryon and Janell speak about how/when they fully acknowledged having an eating disorder. They walk through their stories of acknowledgment, how they told their families and the emotions that ran through them.
The episode starts with a quick warning that this content could be triggering to some listeners as there is content regarding eating disorder habits, including purging and laxatives.
Aryon and Janell kick off by talking about how they have been (Janell has been in Ohio the past week visiting family and due to COVID, they had to find ways to entertain the kids...taking it back to the 90's!
Janell discusses a definition of eating disorders found on DSMpsychology.com and how you don't have to fully see yourself in the whole definition to have an eating disorder, it can be a piece of it that applies to you. They discuss how eating disorders aren't always about weight...it can be solely about control.
Janell lets listeners have a moment to reflect on the definition...time to think about if any of it resonates with them.
Aryon discusses her journey in acknowledging her eating disorder and how her therapist and nutritionist in treatment helper her recognize what's been holding her back from fully acknowledging her eating disorder. She also describes habits used in her eating disorder and how so much of it was based on control.
Janell and Aryon discuss how sometimes people who live in bigger bodies (as they do) might think they can't have an eating disorder b/c they "don't look sick" which is not true.
Then, Janell discusses her eating disorder and coming to the realization that she needed a higher level of care. Coming to terms that she needed to go into treatment in chicago.
Aryon provides a call to action...send a handwritten note to someone. Let someone know you are thinking of them and share your struggles and triumphs.
Janell provides the websites for DSM Psychology (dsmpsychology.com) and NEDA (nationaleatingdisorders.org)
